hey, its all good boys. I will freely admit that I am a little weird and know a bit too much about Vienna Beef to not seem like I work there. Its one of those things that remind me of my childhood, so I just wanted to learn as much as possible about it. It's kind of like people used to think I was majoring in Celtic Studies when I was in college because I knew so much about it. I just found it interesting and read as much on it as possible. I am the same way with the history of graphic design. But back to the subject at hand. The whole point of this thread isn't 'hey, my hot dog is better than your hot dog'. It was more to bring attention to the fact that Vienna Beef has made it possible to get their product, for a price, anywhere in the United States. Kind of a cool thing for them to do with choices as to what you can get in your care pack like vienna boxers (which I find hillarious).

I have not been able to find Vienna meats in Lexington, KY, but I just tried Best's Kosher Jumbo Beef Franks, made in Chicago. Available at Meijer's, pricey at $4.99 a one pound package. Of the store bought brands I have ever tried this is the best. Good, meaty, not squishy/liquidy, spicy dog. Gonna try Vienna as soon as I get the chance. Not going to go the home delivery route tho' takes the fun out of the hunt.

There always seems to be a wiseass in the bunch. It's not the skinless part it is the brand but then again you knew that when you posted. I sell skinless now just another brand.

CSD Like I told you before, I have nothing against them but they dont sale here. Texas is not a big state for hot dog brands like most states are.

quote:Originally posted by Weenie Girl erm, the TARGET dog is different than the HOT DOG STAND Vienna dog. They taste really similar and the roller grill dog, as far as I am concerned, blows the competition out of the water. I mean, I almost want to vomit every time I go to the 7-11 near me and see their roller dogs. Their greasy and wrinklie and give me the heebie-jeebies. The Target dog is juicy not greasy and rather pleasant. A good spin off of the real Vienna. Don't decide against Vienna based off of one experience with their roller grill dog. A vienna beef hot dog from a street vendor in Chicago in the summer is one of the best food experiences in the entire world. I dont' care what anyone says. I can't wait for summer for that fact. I hate hot weather, but I love street vendors with the Vienna Beef. I mean, they are taking Marshall Fields away from us, we have to have something to look forward to. I wonder why a company would make two different grades of hot dogs and sell what is apparently an inferior one in a national store's snack bar? John

John, it's not a matter of one dog being better than another. If one boiled that dog in water, it's taste would be identical to Vienna's retail product, which has been on the market for years. The ingredients in the retail Vienna hot dogs are the same as the ingredients in the Vienna Target retail hot dog. A hot dog cooked on a roller grill tastes different than one that's boiled, char grilled, or flat grilled. Even an Oscar Meyer at 7-11 off a roller grill tastes different than one char grilled or boiled. CSD

CSD, I agree with you regarding the differences in taste that result from different cooking methods. But didn't you state in an earlier post that the ingredients in the retail Vienna hot dog are different than the ingredients in the Vienna Target dog? I thought you said that the Target dog contained added sugar or fructose that the regular Vienna doesn't. Please clarify.

quote:Originally posted by chicagostyledog John & Weenie Girl, Vienna Beef products sold at Target(retail and the snack bar)are formulated differently from the foodservice products. Target's dogs contain: dextrose, corn syrup, and water. Foodservice Vienna Beef products don't contain these ingredients. I haven't read the ingredients on VB's regular retail products sold at Dominick's, Jewel Foods, Sunset Foods, etc. Next time I'm in a non-Target retail food store, I'll check a package. John, the Target dogs don't taste like the foodservice dogs. Maybe some day, you'll get to experience an original, authentic, Vienna Beef hot dog made in Chicago, using Lake Michigan water, on an S.Rosen/MaryAnn steamed bun. I know you like to eat them plain and Danny Meyer's Shake Shack doesn't count. I can tell if the water the dog's boiled in isn't from Lake Michigan and so can some of my dyed-in-the-wool VB customers. Try and figure that one out! CSD

I stopped at a Jewel Food Store on Sunday and read the ingredients on the retail packages of all the Vienna Beef hot dogs. They're the same as the Target retail hot dogs. I didn't buy a package of the Target retail dogs, so I can't compare the tastes of the two products. Do the Target retail dogs taste different from the Target dogs on the roller grill? I can't say. I only eat the food service hot dogs and for the last six weeks, my wife and I have been going through a complete body detoxifcation. No meat, no sugar, no dairy. no white flour, no bread, no pasta, no coffee. Strictly organic food! Fresh squeezed juices, and Chinese teas. I've dropped 20 pounds, feel more energetic, and haven't experienced any cravings. In the next 3 weeks, I'll gradually bring back a few of my favorite foods in moderation, starting with the Chicago Italian Beef Tour on March 11th. CSD

Six weeks of all organic followed by a day of Italian Beef gorging could send you into toxic shock syndrome. I don't want to have to turn that minibus toward the nearest trauma center, man. You need to train to get back into prime beef consuming shape. About a week out, start with half a Kewpie burger followed by a couple slices of kringle. The night before the tour, pick up some Speed Queen barbecue and wash it down with a six pack of Sprecher's Root Beer. As one of the leaders of this expedition you need to set the example. If you're not ready to pack it away on March 11th, I don't know if I'll make it all the way to the end. CSD, there are so many looking up to you--don't let us down. Buddy

No problem! In the next half hour, I'll be taking a blood test to check my cholesterol. On the way home, I'll stop at Kewpees for a cheeseburger. Just a single, not a double. It'll be the first time I've had bread, meat, and cheese in six weeks. Hope it still tastes the same. I'll report back later this morning. CSD

CSD CSD, sounds like you are on some type of diet???? Hope it is working for you. I did the Atkins things and in fact, I still sorta do it. It lowered my cholestrol and BP. I have maintained the same weight for nearly three years. It sorta gets boring as all you eat is meat, cheese, eggs and etc. No bread, potatoes, sweets and that sorta thing. It works though. Healthwise, I have improved. Foodwise??? It ain't so good. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Darn, a girl goes away on vacation for a week and the forum runs away on her. Okay, to clarify the difference between Target Retail and Target Rollergrill hot dogs. Well, its pretty obvious here. The Target Rollergrill dog is the Vienna Beef hot dog that they created, or specially formulated (to sound like a PR person) to go on the Rollergrill so that it cooks evenly that way as well as tastes extremely close to a regular Vienna Beef hot dog. If you look at them, the roller grill dog is bigger, or fatter than the regular retail hot dog. And CSD, I really hope you aren't on Atkins, it is bad for your digestive system.

I'm not on any diet. Twice a year I eliminate all the toxins from my body. The accumulation of toxins accelerates aging. The elimination of toxins awakens the capacity for renewal to reverse one's biological age. Exercise is the other important component. I'll be 59 in September. My only day in the hospital was the day I was born. My first words were "let's eat!" Will I stop eating hot dogs? Never! Moderation is the key. Weenie Girl, are you going to join us for the Chicago Italian beef tour on Saturday, March 11th? It begins at the Vienna Factory Store at 11:00am. Respond by going to the Misc Forum/Food Related for info and communications. CSD
