Spreading the Vienna Feeling

So I already have my friends telling me that they think that I am freak of nature because I enjoy coming onto this website and talking about hot dogs. Well, with the exception of my friend who works for Vienna Beef because she enjoys the free publicity. Anyway.... Little tangent there, sorry. So, I have been going to Vienna Beef's website for quite some time, and I almost wet my pants last night. It's CHANGED! And better yet, they have an ONLINE STORE! You know what this means? DO YOU!? It means I can send Vienna Beef to my Aunt who lives in North Carolina and can't find a good hot dog to save her life, and a kit to make it Chicago Style none the less. I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!! I have already sent out 3 packages, and one of my first thoughts was, i need to tell the people on Roadfood. com. So consider yourself told! And SPREAD THE WORD! *happy dance, happy dance* www.viennabeef.com

Alas Parses I don't have your address and this is the first time I have talked to you. There seriously aren't any Vienna Beef places in Philly? Dude, that is WHACK! I know there is on in Pittsburg. I was there for business. Don't give up on the Vienna Beef. You could always order some for yourself and try it. I recommend. Damn I feel like a walking PR statement.

Weenie Girl, It's been a good few years since I've had a Vienna Beef hot dog. They are not available in Jersey except at Target, and these are different than those sold for home consumption and to vendors. The one I had was at a place in N.Y. I would love to sample a natural casing Vienna at home, but $26.00 per lb is more than I'm willing to pay. About 2 weeks ago, I posted on another forum asking about the hot dogs from the Romanian Kosher Sausage Company in Chicago, which I've heard were very good. A woman from Chicago was kind enough to mail a lb of them to me. $4.69 for the dogs, and another $5.00 for postage. I posted my opinion of these dogs on the Hebrew National thread. If you, or anyone else were willing to mail me a small amount of natural casing Vienna dogs, I would appreciate it. Now is a good time because it is cold in Chicago, and the dogs don't have to be frozen. I got mine in 2 days, put them in the refrigerator, and froze them once I opened the package. As soon as they were sent, the woman e-mailed me with the cost, and I sent out a check. I think this would be a good way for people on this forum to trade hot dogs.

I have never had Vienna Beef hotdogs. I was thinking about ordering some 5 lbs for 32.95 doesn't bother me. But the cheapest shipping option they offer for the 5 lbs is 26.85 making for a total of 59.80 or almost 12 bucks a pound.

Parses, Foods Galore in New Jersey distributes Vienna Beef dogs in 12" 5/1 and 6" 6/1 sizes. They're about $34.00 per 10lb case wholesale but you'll probably need a friend in the food service business who has an account to get them.

If you think about it, you are paying to have Vienna Beef hot dogs, complete with the condiments, delivered to your doorstep. The hot dogs have to remain cold/refrigerated, so they come in a small cooler pak type thing with dry ice, I think. I know my friend the science nerd had fun playing with the dry ice/cold pak. John Fox..... Um, so you're saying you just want me to send you some hot dogs? *chuckles* I dunno, my mom always told me not to talk to strangers. At my local target, the Vienna dogs are in the cooler section of the target greatland or super target, I don't remember which one has the grocery section. Did you check there?

Me, a stranger?! And you are already talking to me. I did have the Vienna Beef dog sold at the snack bar in my local Target. It is a different dog than what is sold by the Chicago hot dog places. The Target dog is made for a roller grill. And in my opinion was rather ordinary. I'm looking to try the natural casing dog, but I don't want to commit to 5 or 10 pounds. I don't even like having to purchase 6 lbs of Usinger's, which I know I like. I have more than a few different brands of dogs in my freezer, so I don't like to have too much of any one brand. Maybe you or anyone here would like to trade? We have some great dogs out my way.

John Boy, you did read what I wrote the right way. Go to Target. Go to the one with the grocery section and look in their refridgerated section. They carry the retail Vienna Beef hot dogs that I can find at my local grocery store here in Chicago. They are the ones that you can use in a steam table to have a genuine Chicago Hot Dog Experience *Drools*

John & Weenie Girl, Vienna Beef products sold at Target(retail and the snack bar)are formulated differently from the foodservice products. Target's dogs contain: dextrose, corn syrup, and water. Foodservice Vienna Beef products don't contain these ingredients. I haven't read the ingredients on VB's regular retail products sold at Dominick's, Jewel Foods, Sunset Foods, etc. Next time I'm in a non-Target retail food store, I'll check a package. John, the Target dogs don't taste like the foodservice dogs. Maybe some day, you'll get to experience an original, authentic, Vienna Beef hot dog made in Chicago, using Lake Michigan water, on an S.Rosen/MaryAnn steamed bun. I know you like to eat them plain and Danny Meyer's Shake Shack doesn't count. I can tell if the water the dog's boiled in isn't from Lake Michigan and so can some of my dyed-in-the-wool VB customers. Try and figure that one out! CSD

Chicagostylehotdog, You're speaking words of love to me *laughs* I usually try to trust my taste buds and not read packages and such. Obviously hot dogs that come fresh from the factory are going to be a little bit different than the hot dogs in the retail packages. I know exactly what you mean about the water chicagostyle. I went to college in Minnesota, and their water tastes funny to me. Same with when I go visit my sister who is to far inland to get lake michigan water. Its one of those weird little things. You fans of Lake Michigan water should keep one thing in mind: Salmon, lake trout, perch and alewives don't have bathrooms or bedrooms.

In fact, Franklin County does not purchase any water at all from anywhere.

Re: Philadelphia Real Vienna Beef dogs were available at Pastrami N'Things Deli at 15th&Locust Streets. They have been closed for a few months. I don't know if or when they'll reopen. The packaged ones are available at Target. I just got a pack at the Montgomeryville store on 309.

It's not in our Bill of Rights, but maybe it should be. Unfortunately, most don't see the value of exercising this right. Being wrong eventually leads to being right. And even if it doesn't, it's a more interesting path than being nothing. Here's one of my favorite poems: Here lies the body of Justin Grey. He died defending his right of way. He is right...his case is strong. But he's as dead as if he's wrong. BTW: I've been drinking steam distilled water since the krypto outbreak in Milwaukee in 1992. CSD

My favorite is Copper River Salmon. It's only available once a year, extremely expensive, and worth every cent. The lake at our northwoods Wisconsin vacation rental home is filled with walleye, bluegill, and crappie. Every once and a while a muskie sneaks in. The lake's 36 acres, 60 feet deep, and spring fed. Vilas county in northern Wisconsin is known for Muskie. Happy Groundhog Day. CSD
