St. Augustine, FL Thu, 01/6/11 12:01 AM (permalink)
Visiting family - and there will be room for a half dozen or so meals.  Here's my list:

Musts:
O'Steens
Whitey's Fish Camp (though a bit of a drive)
Saltwater Cowboy's
Bunnery

Maybes:
Luvin' Oven
Schooner's Seafood House
Barnacle Bill's
Purple Olive
A1A Ale Works

Anything I'm overrating/underrating/missing?

I'll even try and do a recap.

Thanks.

    Stan-
O'Steen's is at the top of your list and deservingly so.  The fried shrimp there are fantastic and some of the sides are really good, too.!  Just be prepared for a wait, no matter what time you go.  Have a great time!  I love St. Augustine.  Oh, and we would love to see a recap.

Try the Prince of Wales at 54 Cuna Street in the Old Section of St Augustine. Depending on when you go you may spend a lot of time dodging tourists. But if you like English pub food, this is the place.

Never been touched on here before. Not roadfood but ST. Augustine has a large history of Haunted places.
For that when my group arrives we always do O.C. Whites. Haunted restaurant and they have to go.
I don't know, seen funny things there, but .......
There are Haunted tours all over the town. Have to have something else than eat, eat, eat.

That's where I went when I first drove down to Miami back in 2002. I couldn't remember the name of the place. Yes I broke free from being regionally appropriate and if I recall I really enjoyed the Eggplant Parm.  If I recall I even went to IHOP the next morning (but that was because nothing else was open. I remember I commented on this at least 5 years ago on a previous post and former poster Lonestar  responded that she felt the earth move that day.

                    Stan,
I second Saltwater Cowboys- it was one of my to 10 favorites last year and I'm sure
O Steens is probably even better.

If you have time check out Clarks Fish Camp too in the Mandarin section of Jacksonville-

If you like fried shrimp (I love it!) Osteen's is a must (closed Sun and Mon). The freied shrimp is same price lunh or dinner so we go here for dinner as most places dinner pries are higher!
Gypsy Cab Co. great lunh place! We hit this place when we're in St. Augustine. Both of these places are just over The Bridge of Lions, now all redone, on Anastastia Island! We were just to Gypsy Dec. 20,2010!
We like "The Columbia" in Old Towne area but haven't been there in a while. A little higher prices but they make a mean Cuban sandwich! And if you like Sangrea I hear it's fantastic! We have a Cuban Restaurant right here in Cocoa Beach (Roberto's) that we love so that's another reason we haven't been to the Columbia in a while!
The Gelato is very good at the place that's in the middle of Old Town. Can't remember the name. But get samples firts! And get the small cup.
There's a tiny Taco stand right at the entrance to Anastatia State Park. We had food from there once that was very good! We stay at Anastatia SP FL, when we go to St. Augustine! Take a ride in,it's beautiful w/ great beach! Happy Eating! KokomoJoe
(If you haven't done it before, tour the Fort and hear the cannon shot!! The lighthouse is a good take as well as the tour at Flagler College! )

Don't miss getting yourself something made with Datil Peppers.
They're only grown in St. Augustine, Florida.

We had the most amazing Cuban sandwich ever somewhere downtown back in 1995 .. tried MANY  over the years, all over Florida and none have came close. We had our hotel room broken into and purse stolen while at the pool (kinda ruining our trip) but we have never forgotten the best cuban ever.

We spent a couple of days in St. Augustine last Sept. & found...
O'Steens...Although the fried shrimp were unique (very light batter), I thought that the Minorcan Clam Chowder (with the datil peppers) & fried chicken were even tastier. We went for a late lunch (2 pm) on a Tuesday & got a table without a wait. (Note: cash only)
Columbia...excellent dinner with unique flavors, but indifferent service on the night we hit it.
A1A Ale House...after a hot, humid morning of touring the fort & old town, enjoyed a lunch of a good cuban sandwich & a couple of house brewed beers.

Wanted to get to Salt Water Cowboys & the Gypsy but ran out of time.
