St. Paddy's Day

Here in NYC we always have a huge, and likely contoversial, parade (although in reality it is just a day for kids to get drunk and throw up on the streets). I hear that the NY parade is the biggest in the world, including Dublin.

What does your town (your neighborhood, you church, your home,,,) do for St' Pat's?

not a blessed thing.

(PS Santa Fe does something. I think tho it's just a few pubs or green beer or somethin', I'll check it out...)

well, i know dallas has a parade on greenville ave..
and chicago dyes the river green..
philly has a parade..

Most places I've lived didn't do a thing.
Cincinnati does it up a little bit. The westside is full of us Irish (& German) and drinking is considered to be a sporting event. I guess St. Patrick's Day would be something like the Pro Bowl because we called it amateur night.
You can tell who they are by the green beer!
Where I live now they just throw up road blocks. Yeah I know, I'm shocked too!

I'll be dropping off a little catering and be home before dark.
With a name like mine it's a celebration everyday!

I heard on the local news this morning that the St. Patrick's Day parade here in Pittsburgh is the second biggest in the country. Somehow, I really doubt this. I imagine at the very least New York, Boston and Chicago have bigger parades.

Our parade here in Boston is rarely held on St. Pat's day. It's always held on the Sunday closest to March 17th. {tommorow}.

I do know about a lot of hot air on St.Pat's but this is from above...

Where I live in Western Massachusetts we have a parade every year in the city of Holyoke. We are often touted as having the best St. Patrick's Day parade in the state, though I have not been to any other. Holyoke is also the birthplace of Volleyball, among other things.

There are some Irish pubs that have parties and almost every tavern in the city of Portland and surrounding environs serves green beer. This is the one day of the year where my part-Irish wife will not drink.

St. Patrick's Day? in Boston!?

Interesting tid-bit. St. Patrick's Day is not a holiday in Boston. Evacuation Day, celebrating a Revolutionary War battle is a holiday in Suffolk County. City and State workers in Boston get the day off. It happens to fall on March 17.

I do appreciate the fact that while the celebration is huge, with an equally controversial parade as NYC (and part of the reason for having it on Sunday is so the NYC firefighters can join in), it is concentrated in the old Irish neighborhood of South Boston which no-one needs to visit unless they choose to walk in vomit. Of course, even here in the suburbs the teenagers celebrated last night by smashing mailboxes.

One year in NYC I had a weekday business appointment at 42nd and 5th on March 17. The person I was to meet hadn't made the connection and went out to lunch beforehand. After I waited some time they called the office from a pay phone. They'd gotten stuck in parade revelers and couldn't get back to the office.

We're staying home and cooking a boiled dinner.

BTW - that will be a "gray" or fresh corned beef. That's one local St. Patrick's tradition I really enjoy.

When we lived in NM there was this (dumb?) tradition for kids to pinch each other if you didn't wear grren on SPD. I rememeber soem kids got really scared of it. Anything for a bit o' sadism....

This is not a tradition in NYC (as far as I know) but I googled it and found out it happens all over the USA, and was statred by children in the 1980's. hmmmm...

My corned beef is simmering in the crock pot, albeit a bit late in the day! *laughs* Just added the carrots, potatoes and onion and will add the cabbage after a bit more. Yes, we're going to eat late today I guess! It's still pretty chilly here, so it'll be a good dinner.

Happened in R.I. in the 60s. I know. My Dad told me to get used to it, it happened to him in the 20s.

Happened in California in the sixties. Anyway, what's wrong with a little sadism?

The City of Syracuse has had an annual parade for many years.

Our family had our traditional boiled dinner last night, and during the course of watching the 12 hours of sebring and preparing said feast, I managed to knock back a four pack of Guinness draught cans...yum! Did not wear a speck of green and no one pinched me...
