You guys need to go to Alessi's Bakery in W. Tampa while you're there for a wonderful sandwich. That has become our stopping point in our annual journey to Sarasota each year.

Haven't had a sandwich at Alessi's, but have had some of their sweeter offerings. It's on W. Cypress for sure, nearby cross street is Armenia I think. The whole Hyde Park area is worth checking out.

It's very, very likely Alessi will be on the list of our Roadfood meet-up.

Hillbilly, Glad to hear you will be in the neighborhood for a St. Pete area meet. I'm visiting 2/2-2/9. You vanished way too soon from the Hot Dog Tour.

Cheers, John We order Carrollwood Deli anytime we have a working lunch. The pasta salad rocks and the sandwiches never disappoint. We all drool when we start thinking about them before it arrives :) Also, I heard a recommendation from a co-worker to try Costa's in Tarpon Springs. She said it was a street over from the main drag and "it's where the locals go." Can't vouch for it, but I genuinely trust her opinion.

I'm actually staying in Clearwater, but I'm in Treasure Island during the day Monday through Friday. Just name the time and place for lunch and I'll be there!

I've never visited the Lucky Dill in St. Pete, but I have visited the "original" Palm Harbor location often. Actually, "original" isn't quite right, either; the Dill was located at Alderman Road and US 19 when we first moved here in 1999. A few years ago, the Dill relocated to Alderman and Alternate US 19. I have also visited the Lucky Dill operation in downtown Tampa, and found it to be very much the way that some others have described the St. Pete location-- basically a "come'n'get it, take it or leave it" attitude on the part of the staff, although the food is still good. Ny suggestion would be to skip both St. Pete and Tampa, and stick with the Palm Harbor Dill. It's a very friendly place, and still has table service. Some of the wait staff are college types, but many seem to be either Russian or Middle European emigres or-- shall we say- "more experienced" servers. You can probably guess from my name that I'm not Jewish, but my wife is. No, she's not a New Yorker, but she knows Wolfie's on the Florida east coast-- and she says the food is very good at the Dill in Palm Harbor. I think so, too, but then what does this Irish boy know, right? Yes, you get a free cheesecake slice (or apple strudel, your choice) with every meal at the Lucky Dill... but you sometimes need to ask for it. By the way, absolutely DO NOT confuse the real Lucky Dill with the hamburger joint that operates out of the old Alderman/US 19 location, which was for awhile immediately after the Dill's move to the the Alt 19 location, known as the "Lucky Dill Burger Grill." When the real Dill was at that location, they served a delicious, 3/4-pount burger that you could top as you wished. The new operation at this location also serves burgers, but it ain't the same place at all (bad service, cold uncaring people-- not at all like the Dill on Alt 19).

VJ, I miss the original location of Lucky Dill. It was much closer to where I stay when I come to the area, and I miss the newstand that used to be in that shopping center too. Welcome to Roadfood. There are several other active posters in the Tampa Bay area, In fact there was a get together a few weeks ago organized by Kristi S, and fortunately I was down there for it. Do a search for the thread called Florida Roadfood Meet. Since you like delis, I hope you know about Lenny's in Clearwater. It's on the west side of 19 just south of the Phillies ballpark, and the La Quinta Inn. The road is under construction (when is it not?)so you have to take the right hand lane to Bay to Bay. I had breakfast there twice and it was extremely good and a great bargain too. On weekends you will have to wait for a table. The sandwich menu looks pretty good too. These people know how to run a good restaurant. They close at 3 though. Give it a try and report back.

Today's NYTimes has an AJ Apple article on circus performers favorite restaurants. One that is mentioned is "Chateau France" in St Petersburg. I've never heard of the place, do any of you know about it and can fill us in on it? Cheers, John

Just had lunch at downtown St Pete's first Indian place - "India Grill." Nice little lunch buffet set-up for $6.95 and all the naan and tandoori chicken you can eat (plus more entrees)! They also have a plain salad (for the unadventurous) plus some Indian sauces, and a daal soup. (Apparently the menu changes daily!) They close the place at 3 to get ready for the dinner crowd. If you're in St Pete next time, check it out. Parking downtown during lunch is hideous, so be patient. The food is worth it.

Hey Kristi - I ate at the India Grill a few months ago and just loved it! I had the lunch buffet and really enjoyed the curried beef, and some kind of chicken in a white garlic sauce. I'm not quite sure what everything was, but it was all good! With all the condiments to try, it was a fun and tasty experience. I also liked the hot chai that came with the meal - yum! I would highly second your recommendation for this cozy little place.

It is always a good thing when someone revives an old thread to add something new- even when their spelling and context leaves us somewhat bemused. Keep on posting, wreckless1. Cheers, John
