Staff Games/Incentives

Just trying to get some ideas for some new games to play with staff.  We have quite a few that we plan but they're definitely getting tired of them and I'd like to introduce some new stuff.  Any ideas would be great!! (Fine dining, full bar, concept restaurant)

Try find the hundred dollar bill. That always got my juices flowing.

Games? They are employees not pets. Just saying.

Thanks for the input, but I don't give my pets $50 or bottles of wine when they win a game. Trust me, it's a great way to push them to sell & WOW our guests.

You lost me, you need to coax your staff to make money? I'm old school, but I have an 18 yo niece that I taught a bit of customer service to in our last business. She is pulling down around $800 a week in a failing "fine dining" restaurant serving tables. They will be closing their doors within a week or two, but the kid is still making money.

If you want games, maybe you should try cable tv?

I used to have a manager who would put a scrap of paper under the table legs, just barely showing. On it she would write " This paper redeemable to bearer two free dinners or $50.00 in cash if brought to a manager." The idea was to try to keep the restaurant cleaner. Sometimes it would be taped under a table top just to see if anyone scraped the gum off. I have to admit, it made me look at things a little differently. It wasn't a game, it was an incentive to do a better job. The location was always different and was never announced to the staff. Who ever found the paper had to keep the secret of where and when it was found.

The only way I have found to motivate cooks is to promise them a round or two at the nearest watering hole. LOL

p.s. Welcome to Roadfood MPHeather and mlooney!!  There are a lot of nice people on this site so don't pay attention to those with acid tongues. As you are in the business, I don't have to tell you that it takes a thick skin not to be offended. Please don't judge this site by a few snide remarks by some others.

Localnet, do you even work in a restaurant?  The purpose of playing games and having incentives is not just to motvate your staff to sell, but also to have fun and let them know that you appreciate what they do.  If you are not doing this, then shame on you.

I agree. Good idea for any business. That IS good business. I had a boss do stuff like that for us salesmen at a car dealership. We appreciated it and it was great for morale.

Probably the word "games" is a poor choice of words. Years ago when I was in appliance sales we had a monthly meeting in which cash prizes called "spiffs" were awarded based on sales. I wonder what sales are being pushed in the restaurant that require the waitstaff to achieve? Is this a Olive Garden type deal where they nearly force you to buy wine and they write you up because you didn't sell enough beverages?

I can see both sides and the hidden note or scrap of paper intrigues me, I may use that. But I would hate it if the really good worker didn't find it and the not so good  worker did. Wouldn't that be a kick in the butt for your best employee, if that happened 3 or 4 times over a few months?

I created a Survivor themed game in my restaurant.  What we do is put each servers name up on the board.  They each get 5 dots after their name.  Choose specific items or specials that you want sold that day and then each time someone sells one of those they get to erase someone else s dot off of the board.  Played until the last person standing.  If there is a tie at first cut, the ones voted off come back into play and choose the winner by ballot.  Makes for a lot of fun!
