Stainless at the scrap yard!

Went to the scrap yard today, first time in some months. Man they had thrown out a complete kitchen from one of the local highschools. Drug out a stainless steel pail, 4x 1/8 pans, a bunn ice tea dispenser , a bain marie with a huge long pan, some mixing bowls and a bunn coffee maker filter holder- $14. There was a hobart dishwashing machine and a 12 foot long double sink that looked ok. lots of serving counters some ok. I saw a g.e. electric deep fryer but the oil pan was missing, it was treacherously stuck on top of the pile I have not seen such a huge element on a fryer . They had gutted the grills -arg!- to remove the ferrous metal- dang! Lots of 1 inch stainless pipe, some 3 inch also and a whole dumpster of industrial scrap stainless. Got in the "zone" and completely forgot to take my wife to college !! In the doghouse now! Try to get back tomorrow and get the fryer.( while shes in bed)

Jacksnack, This is exactly how 99 percent of all successful people start out. Keep up the good work. You will be rewarded. I am laughing because this is exactly how my grandfather started out after leaving Germany. I envy you. Stay true to your roots and I am sure you will succeed

Poured with rain again here. Might get there on Monday. 90 inches of rain here in the past weeks. Here is a picture of one pile at the yard! If you look you can see all sorts of stuff. You have to climb on 'cos they use a huge machine to pile it up-shame. Look through it and you find stuff thats perfect. 80c a pound.

There is one rule :- if you get hurt you have to get out of there, if they find you bleeding and stuck you are ripe to be thrown in the crusher! Ha

MikeinRI Just curious. Are they ok with folks helping themselves? Seems like quite a liability issue. Most scrap/salvage yards are not managed by the Little Sisters of Good Grace. You might have a better shot at being "injured" at some if you said "I will sue you if I fall off this pile" than actually falling off the pile.

Most scrapyards are not nice places. If he was out there, they must have known about it because otherwise dogs would have torn him apart or he would have been shot. I've seen it happen before. I used to make a living scrapping metal. It's not a business for weak people or happy people. There's an unwritten rule that you need to spit and cuss all day long.

My Father Uncle & Grandfather used to take me to the scap yards in Jersey City Newark & Elizabeth on Saturday mornings while my friends were watching cartoons. I made friends with German Shepherds who luckily for me had breakfast by the time we got there.
