Stamey's for 1st time, or repeat visit to Lex #1??

I'll be driving through the Greensboro / Lexington area on Saturday, and need advice. I went to Lexington #1 before and loved it. Do you go back there for my "fix", or try Stamey's? I hear generally good things about Stamey's, but hate to be disappointed when Lex #1 is just a few more miles down the road. Is Stamey's on the same level as Honey Monks? Worth stopping? I don't make it through the area very often at all, which is why this is such a hard decision.

I haven't been to Stamey's in a while but it has never been at Lexington #1's level in my book. If you are looking for an alternative, The Barbecue Center in downtown Lexington is also worth a try.

thanks for the tip on BBQ Center... Speedy's is another one I've seen mentioned alot. I've heard mixed reviews on Stamey's, but the people who love it really love it. You hardly ever hear mixed reviews on the good Lex places.

NOTHING is on the same level as Honey Monks! They have added a "Coarse chopped" option to their menu, and the staff refers to it as the filet mignon of BBQ. However, I still prefer the outside brown chopped. I order the large tray--just BBQ, red slaw and huspuppies-- and wash it down with either sweet tea or Cheerwine. And then finish it off with some of their great cobbler.

I thought Stamey's was very good and I am usually always in favor of trying a new place. But I love Lexington #1 and there is no way I could be in the area and not eat there. So if I only had time for one meal, I would go to Lexington #1.

Not a fan of stameys but if I were heading back to lexington I would be sure to bring my own slaw...raised on eastern que, the red slaw just doesn't add to the que sandwich experience imo.

Just another indication of the different tastes between those of us raised eating the western NC (Lexington) style and those from down east. I like the Q and brunswick stew at Wilbers, Parkers, Bill Ellis, and Skylight, but I'll leave the slaw and boiled potatos on the plate. I'm neutral on the breadsticks, but much prefer hushpuppies.

Stick with Monk's or try Barbecue Center, Cook's or Tar Heel Q. Stamey's is good, especially the sliced barbecue and hushpuppies, but Lexington #1 and the aforementioned joints are excellent.

Thanks for all the input. I guess another option would be to go to either Stamey's or BBQ Center (another place I need to try) and get the smallest, lightest meal I can. Try it so I know how is tastes. THEN, go to Lex #1 for the main event. Two BBQ meals for dinner, especially if I don't get all the sides (and eat every last hushpuppy) can't be that much worse than going back for 2nds at the dinner table, huh?

Lex has better BBQ, but Stamey's hush puppies are the best.

Both are in the top five in NC. If you have never had Stamey's...give it a shot...BBQ Center is another great place but spotty on quality. BBQ Center can be great but can also be a place you leave and look for another place to eat.

Dearfolk, My advice is for you to go with the new-to-you place, Stamey's. You won't go wrong. Try to time it so you are returning through Lexington and then try one of the ones mentioned here, or Speedy Lohr's (not the same as Speedy's!), or John Wayne's, or... and the list goes on and on and on: there are 21 BBQ places in the current Lexington phone book (it's a private company: Lexington Telephone!), and none of them seem to be on any verge of going out of business. Then there's several decent more ones up the road in Thomasvile and a plethora more down in Rowan County around Salisbury-Spencer-East Spencer.... As If On 'Cue (None Lately), Ort. Right your are, Ort. Salisbury is home to College Drive-In Barbecue, Richard's Barbecue and Wink's King of Barbecue. All worth a visit. Down US Hwy 52 in Granite Quarry is M&K Barbecue. Really good barbecue and other good stuff. However one of my current favorites is Tar Heel Q on US 64 west of Lexington close to the Yadkin river.

Does anybody know if any of the good places in Lexington are open on Sunday? We're going to be in that area this Sunday. Thanks.

Definately try Stamey's. It is a NC classic, and while some may debate whether it is as good as Honey Monks, it is certainly worthy of a comparison taste test. I believe that they make some of the best pork in the state.

Jimmy's may be open on Sundays. Another possibility is Whitley's or Southern II. Call ahead.
