Instead of asking for one of the three weird named sizes I did ask for a small cup of coffee thinking I would get the smallest of the three, the 12 oz. cup. What I got was an 8 oz. cup and was charged $1.00. It was not on the menu board. I was kind of surprised but since it was in the afternoon it was really exactly what I wanted. That was in a shopping center in Federal Way, WA. I've tried that elsewhere but always got the 12 oz. cup.

Starbuck's call it a Short and they keep them hidden underneath the counter. In an emergency it's the only thing I purchase there.

If they try to give you a 12 oz. say no, no, I want a Short. They all have them except some places like some Barnes & Noble which are run by B & N.

That's not totally true. I used to travel the country and have been in Starbucks just about everywhere - north, south, east and west. I also was part of the team that introduced them to Target stores and those are run to Starbucks' standards and not Target. I am sure B & N would have the same agreement. There are small cups as I mentioned but not all Starbucks are going to have them. They exist not so much for the stores to sell but probably more for catering purposes. Like I said, I've asked at several Starbucks and so far only one was able to produce the small cup you call a short. It is probably discretionary or local market.

"Standards" and "Run By" are not the same.

I'm trying to help you out here Davydd, The secret word is Short. Demand it at a company owned store and you'll get it.

Now that I am no longer working in downtown Minneapolis I won't be going to Starbucks much anyway. We have Caribou's in my neighborhood. I will go and try the new Pike's Place brew though.
