Starbucks Wipes Name From Seattle Location


NEW YORK —  Starbucks Corp. said Thursday it is wiping its name from one of its Seattle-area stores and adding alcohol to the menu.

The Seattle-based gourmet coffee chain said it is changing the name of one of its existing stores in its hometown to a name that reflects the neighborhood location. The store will be called 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea. It will open next week and will serve coffee and tea as well as wine and beer.

The company said it will then open two more Seattle-area stores without the Starbucks name in locations that aren't currently Starbucks stores.

The chain said if the rethought coffee shop is a success it will consider replicating it in other cities.

"It's interesting," said Morningstar analyst R.J. Hottovy, "especially since the Starbucks brand has been such an integral part of their success."

Hottovy said he thinks the Starbucks brand still "resonates" with those who drink coffee regularly. But, he added, with the recession now in its second year, the brand may be struggling more because it is considered "premium," and therefore expensive, by consumers.

he company has been unable in recent months to keep its sales growing as more consumers cut out small luxuries to save money. Starbucks is slated to report its fiscal third quarter financial results on Tuesday and analysts have largely predicted another same-store sales decline, particularly, in particular, that competition with lower-priced rivals like McDonald's Corp. has heated up.

McDonald's has been rolling out its own line of espresso-based drinks to all of its 14,000 U.S. locations and has been heavily promoting the beverages.

Andrew Hetzel, the founder of coffee consulting group Cafemakers, said Starbucks may also be renaming its stores to provide a testing ground for changes and, possibly, to bring in a new brand of consumer.

"It looks to me that they are testing a specialty sub-brand to see if they can capture some other segment of the market that would otherwise be disillusioned by a large corporate chain," Hetzel said, adding that opening only one at first "gives them a live shop to test changes in menu offerings, store design and, perhaps, procedures quickly" without disrupting operating stores branded with the Starbucks name.

I've always said Starbucks should be focasing on BOOZE and not food!  Its a young crowd, worried about what cool and how starbucks makes THEM look............loyalty isn't in the vocab.  Thus booze.  For all the talk about health and green, the age LOVESSSSSS to party and smoke.  In Italy, every coffee shop served booze.  Its a natural combo.

ANd, check out the packages these "baristas" get........this company really BELEIVED all this hype about being a "kinder" company, well like Ben and Jerry's, their finding out the REALITY of trying to mix capitalism with socialism....it ain't happening, or at least, not in the long run.

If you hate NY pizza I cannot fathom your  food preferences. I think every hangup she has with Starbucks stealing her identity is legit...what would you do if you built a business up like she did and some big corporate behemoth comes in and appropriate all your ideas like it is no big deal .. and they happen to be next door to you?

  She build her building looking like she wanted it to look. She was using old wood and the whole deal. Would you want someone coming next to the business that you build up to look this way with something Modern and out of place, or would you want something that fit in with the area. I bet Starbucks took this into account. That is what is happening.  Why don't your comprehend what this is about?

Billy B, I think the problem the woman had was not that Starbucks rebuilt so they would blend in with the area, but that they duplicated exactly everything she had in her business from the color of the paint to the wood-framed chalkboards and the light fixtures, and then had the gall to ask one of her employees where they obtained the awnings, so they could duplicate them exactly also!  It sounds to me like they were hoping her customers would come into their place by mistake (a definite no-no).

If you guys have ever been to Seattle you would see many building with Reclaimed wood, Awning, whatever. Seattle is very old city with very old building. If you go to a coastal town you will see rustic buildings in the towns that all look a like. There is a town in Washington State called Leavenworth that is a German town with all German style building. Thats what makes it a German looking town, and the reason people go there. Reclaimed wood in Seattle isn't anything new, you see it all over the place. I would tell you that if I was her and I went through all that work on my building, I would like it if someone next to me did the samething. It would enhance the look of the neighborhood. What would she think if a Kite store came in with bright colors that took away from her look. What if a Balloon stoor came in and had Balloons painted all over the side of the building. Starbucks is building these stores looking like the neighboorhood they are in, not looking like the green generic stores we see all over the nation. Tell me, would you want a store next to you looking like a sore thumb or fitting in with the ambiance of the area. I'm just saying if you can't pick your neighbor be happy they think enough about the neighborhood to fit in. Let me tell you, Starbucks doesn't want to rock the boat, they are trying to fit in...........................If you were in this Bavarian town would you want a Modern looking building nextdoor to yours, or one that looked similar????????????????

                                                   

I posted this because I can see both sides BUT if I were the original store owner I’d make the area at my entrance so eye catching that people walking by would think that was the only entrance to both buildings and if I didn’t already serve it, add coffee to my menu. Competition is always ok in my book, it just draws more people to the area, and then let the best food/drink, win. There are ways to make the entire front of a building point to the entrance, and that would be my first goal.

No kidding, this is about a lack of self-confidence.  A restaurant is complaining about a coffee shop?  Really?

I think Starbucks totally underestimated just how conservative 99% of custormers are when it comes to a food biz staff. Music shop, etc...different story...food...........big time difference.
