Good to see you here Fish! How do you accomplish getting those frys right outa the fryer?

There are some very popular skinny frys sold at the State Fair of Texas. They are called Jack's Frys. They have a big pump bottle of vinegar to put on em. If SnS are anything like Jack's I must try them.
Joe

I always sit at the counter and just ask them for fresh cooked fries.

Also to answer your question below, they have those bottles of peppers that are
packed in vinegar, pretty tasty on a lot of stuff.

I ate at a SteaknShake last week in Galesburg, Il.  The food was just okay.  I found the chili way too mild for my taste.  HOWEVER, I added a lot of the vinegar packed in a bottle of peppers and it improved the flavor a lot.

Doe anyone know where I could buy a similar product online?  The vingegar and peppers combined were really tasty.

Justm, SnS makes their Chili mild so kids can eat it. But folks can do like you and spice it up. I might add jalapenos next time I have some.

They sell those little peppers in vinegar at most groceries. They may not be exactly what SnS has but close. If there was a label on the SnS bottles then you could match it exactly. We use that stuff on beans and other things here in Texas. And most restaurants have it around here.

    Just looked in my fridge;

    Trappey's Tobasco Peppers in Vinegar

I bought that at a grocery store. It's good.

      PapaJoe,

Thanks for the info.  I have not found something very similar in my local store yet.  However, I did a search for Trappey's Peppers in Vinegar and found them for sale online.  I'll order a bottle tonight.  Thanks!

Yesterday I had a bbq burger with those crunchy onion things on top with fries and a sweet tea for $4.99. Couldn't beat it with a stick.

Justm, I hope you like that brand. Keep your eyes open at the grocery. I think they would be in w/ the hot sauce. Some stores try to hide stuff though. :~)

Oh, some here have liked the peppers and vinegar they have at SnS. Some have not.

Ces, that BBQ buger w/ onion rings on top does sound good. With fries and tea does sound like a good deal.

The question remains... can you mix and match any of SnSs cheeses, sauces, and bun / toast stuff? And now, crunchy stuff on top?

A double steakburger sided by fries and a cup of chili always puts a smile on my face.

Bob, sounds like a combo I might like. The "double" sounds like they way to go on their burgers.

I may see if they will put some extra "chili meat" in my chili next time.

Tha fries... some folks like em and some folks don't. I havent had them yet so I can't say.

Steak and Shake here in the Cincinnati area was not my favorite place to go for years. Up until about 5 years ago all of the units I tried from Cincinnati to Dayton had exceptionally slow service, lots of smirking kids hanging out doing nothing, and smirky, attitudey service. For whatever reason they suddenly became more competitive and now we enjoy going there and we get service and we get our food in a reasonable time.

I really enjoy their Chicago style hot dog.

DonW, I think (?) you are the first to mention the CSD. Wonder what kinda dog they use?  Good to hear they have straightened up their act in your area.

Anymore comments about the service? I think it has been on the + side from comments on this thread so far.

They make excellent shakes and "crisp" burgers (which I like).  When my wife and I "discovered" this chain on a vacation in Orlando we couldn't get enough of them.  Now we have one a mile away that we have been to twice in 6 years.  Go figure.

Jim, maybe a shake, crisp burger, and some chili 3 way... would get you there more often? But for us Texans just think of the 3 way as pasta w/ sauce and beans. :~)

                        Joe,

Here is a no bean Texas chili that one eats "one way" - a big spoon.  Way better than Frank X.'s

S&S chili is a good appetizer, especially with those tiny "oyster crackers" they give you.

Emeril's chili sounds great! He maybe read the thread here about Benny Binion's chili. My version used Sirloin and Chipolte chilis in adobo.

And yes Jim... those oyster crackers go good w/ chili and pasta in Cincinnati, or SnS chili. Shanghai Jimmy also served them with his Chili Rice. I try to always keep some around the house.

In my opinion, their food is just so-so, although they do have fairly decent burgers.  Their fries aren't too bad.  The big draw for me is their shakes, and the fact that you can mix and match flavours.

Had my first Steak n Shake experience this afternoon, for lunch and at their two-month-old location on I-95 south of Fredericksburg, Virginia. My sentiments are exactly that quoted above. I, perhaps, made the mistake of ordering a "grilled" chicken sandwich versus a burger but, honestly, it tasted like an airport chicken sandwich. Same with the fries. The only thing that saved-the-day was a great chocolate shake.

Three questions for you SnS fans:

                              Do they serve breakfast?
                              How are their hot dogs?
And when during the afternoon -- a la Sonic -- are their beverages discounted?

                            Thanks.

They do serve breakfast, but I don't like the new Silver Dollar potatoes they serve.  They used to have really good home fries.  After they made the switch, I stopped eating breakfast there.  You make like them, though.  Strange, but the breakfast menu isn't on their web site.  Eerie.

Also, they currently offer half-price shakes & drnks weekdays 2-4,  both p.m. and a.m.!

Glad to see PapaJoe8 is back from Marble Falls.

Oh, by the way, while the breakfast menu is not on their web site by name, it is on their carry-out menu link (strangely):

                                http://sns-com.s3.amazonaws.com/pdfs/nov2010/SNS-Dine-In-2.pdf

Also, according to our local Steak N' Shake manager, the steak franks are their own brand all-beef sirloin frankfurters.  Sounds good to me.  Will try them soon.

A double cheesburger all the way, their great "skinny" fries, and a diet cherry Coke. This is the only thing I order at SnS. I hear alot of people complain that going thru the drive-thru their food is not hot; but I have never had this prolbem yet.

I was craving beef yesterday, was thinking about going for a steak dinner somewhere. Changed my mind after finding the S &S coupons in the mail. Got the double steak burger with fries and  slaw (which was almost inedible to me, but I am not one for the fake taste of some supermarket slaws which is what this tasted like), and a Butterfinger shake.  Next time I will opt for a salad or chili instead of the slaw.  Not bad for $6.00 plus tax and a tip.  Less than the filet would have cost me at a steak place for sure,  I want to try the peppercorn patty melt sandwich and the butter burger, maybe those coupons will be around soon. The hot dogs looked good, but we had hot dogs at school today for lunch. Our school cafeteria serves yummy slaw, perhaps they need to give others their recipe?

I'd certainly love to see your school's slaw recipe, Speechpeach.

I don't believe all the locations serve breakfast. In fact I know the two locations close to me don't. I did get some coupons with the Sunday paper and went SnS for lunch yesterday. Unfortunately I ordered the Frisco melt and didn't care for it. Should have stuck with my favorite the dbl steakburger. I did try one of their hotdogs several months ago, I'll stick with the hamburgers.

Yes it was a double. I believe they only come as a double. 2 beef patties, 1 slice of american and 1 slice of swiss(I may be wrong about the kind of cheese) Grilled sourdough bread and the sauce which is sort of similar to russian dressing and that's it. I think the bread dripping with the butter product kind of turned me off.
I don't remember much about the HD except I had a coupon for a $2.99 Dog and fries.

The Frisco Melt I had was quite good.  Steak N Shake has some good & not-so-good menu items, but I do think they have some QA problems nationwide.  Consistency is not always there.

I hear alot of people complain that going thru the drive-thru their food is not hot; but I have never had this prolbem yet.

Odd, since they make the food after you order it.  I've always had the opposite problem.  If I want to eat in the car for whatever reason I have to wait because the food is too hot.

Also, according to our local Steak N' Shake manager, the steak franks are their own brand all-beef sirloin frankfurters.  Sounds good to me.

Stopped back by the Fredericksburg, Virginia SnS location this past Wednesday and, indeed, tried their "Carolina (Slaw) Frank" -- a skinless, all beef frankfurter cooked on a griddle, split down the middle and served on a toasted bun with onions, mustard and coleslaw. Not bad but not great either. No snap. No carmelization of the frank from the cooking surface (read: just warmed). And those fries! They certainly appear good conceptually (thin, some skin, etc.) but are virtually tasteless.

For me, at least, the place has morphed into a locale to (only) get a decent shake. That, itself, is certainly not a bad thing.

Their slaw is pretty much the same slaw you can get at KFC, unless they have a special kind to put on hot dogs.
