Stern's Restaurant in LA - Cole Slaw Sun, 08/27/06 9:21 PM (permalink)
In the 60's I remember my aunt making a special trip to Stern's Restaurant in Los Angeles just for their cole slaw. I have done web searches and fear they have been out of business for some time now. Does anybody remember this restaurant? Any chance of finding the recipe for their cole slaw. As I remember, it was creamy and slightly sweet but have found nothing that comes close to my memories of this slaw.

I just got back from LA recently and this post jarred my memory. I have never been to Stern's, but the sweet and creamy cole slaw reminds me of the cole slaw a Philippe's in Downtown LA. IMHO it is the best I've ever tasted.

Have no idea what the slaw about which you wrote was made, but outside of my mother's homemade slaw dressing, I've found Marzetti's Slaw Dressing to come a close replica. It is slightly sweet and creamy and makes what I believe to be a very good slaw.

I have no idea as to how my mother made her dressing, but as old as Marzetti's is, I would hazard a guess that it is close to being what homemade tastes like. I would also guess that it is available nationwide in groceries.

It is also good when making chicken salad. I hope you will try it and give it your assessment.

Sometimes a recipe search is just out of curiosity ... sometimes the desire is more serious.
Not knowing which group you're in ... If you are really serious about finding the recipe and you don't mind doing the footwork, you might try to find out who the owners were and ask them(or their children) directly.

To figure our who those folks were, find out the street address that the restaurant was at, and then:
        a) look up who the property owner is by calling the county equalization office, and ask the current owners if they know who the owners were back in those days.
        b) inquire at the businesses immeiately surrounding the address to see if they recall who the owners were.
