Steve Irwin - RIP Mon, 09/4/06 2:00 AM (permalink)
RIP Crocodile hunter....
My news feeds went nuts around 1:30 this morning with the breaking news of his passing. Though I thought he was a nut case, he did good..

Croc Hunter Irwin killed by stingray

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has died in a freak marine accident while shooting a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef.

The 44-year-old is believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest while he was diving.

He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred.

Mr Irwin's body is being flown to a morgue in Cairns.

Tasmanian police have confirmed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

A spokeswoman said in a statement police had made contact with Mrs Irwin and "passed on a message relating to the death of her husband".

Melbourne-born Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".

The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.

Thanks to his TV programs, Irwin is perhaps the best-known Australian in the United States.

He has also starred in movies and developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin.

The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) said a call was received about 11am (AEST) on Monday and an emergency services helicopter was flown to a boat on Batt Reef, off Port Douglas, with a doctor and emergency services paramedic on board.

Mr Irwin had a puncture wound to the left side of his chest and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Irwins have two children: a daughter, Bindi Sue Irwin, eight, and a son, Robert (Bob) Clarence Irwin, three.

Bob was involved in a controversial incident in January, 2004, when his father dangled him near a crocodile at Australia Zoo.

Mr Irwin carried his infant son in one arm while feeding a dead chicken carcass to a crocodile with the other hand.

Child welfare and animal rights groups criticised his actions as irresponsible and tantamount to child abuse.

Mr Irwin said any danger to his son was only a perceived danger and that he was in complete control of the situation.

In June 2004, Mr Irwin came under fire again when it was alleged he came too close to and disturbed some whales, seals and penguins while filming a documentary in Antarctica.

Interacting with Antarctic wildlife in a disapproved manner may be a breach of Australian federal and international laws. But the issue ended without charges being filed.

Mr Irwin had close links with Prime Minister John Howard and was a guest at The Lodge during a function for US President George W Bush in 2003.

Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Mr Irwin for his work in promoting Australia.

Mr Irwin was heavily involved in last year's "G'Day LA" campaign.

"The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," a spokesman said.

Mr Irwin also championed many environmental projects.

These included the Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation, and International Crocodile Rescue.

I feel bad for his kids and wife (and family, friends, etc.) but the guy always really annoyed me. He seemed to be one step away from being the Grizzly Manhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427312)- very knowledgeable and in his own mind, repectful of animals, but to me he just seemed to annoy them. I mean, whether wild or raised in captivity, they're still wild, undomesticated animals, and they don't want somebody holding them, for as many takes as it takes to get the shot, with him poking at them. Nearly every time I saw him, he seemed to be forcing some poor animal to be held, despite how badly it was trying to get away. I'm all for educating people about wildlife, but he just seemed to be forcing himself on wild animals and exploiting them for his own motives. I think it was hypocritical of him to teach people about respecting animals when it was obvious that he wasn't really doing it himself. It was a tragic death, I'm truly sorry that it happened, and I think he was a caring person, but I just don't agree with his methods of trying to educate people about animals.

Like him or not you have to agree that he did a lot to bring attention to the many varied creatures on this planet that many would never have heard of if not for him. I never thought he was disrespectful and he always handled them so carefully. I thought he was a nutter but a sweet nutter.

G-d Bless his wife and kids.

Too sad, I really liked his shows but I always thought a land animal would get him. Sorry to hear of his passing.

He was entertaining, always tempting fate and had a great show.

I am sorry that he had to leave us at age 44 with a family but he was doing what he did best. A little wild but great.

If he had been killed by a crocodile, it would have been sad, without question, but it also would have been something that could be readily comprehended. However, for Steve Irwin to have been killed by a Stingray is beyond sad. The number of fatalities from this ocean dweller is very small, and the odds of this happening were probably in the category of one in several million.

According to BBC News, he had been bored by a period of inactivity, and had gone into the water to shoot some extra footage for the children's TV show that is hosted by his daughter. While doing this good deed for her, he met his untimely end. I will miss him.

                    Hello All,
Steve Irwin also seemed to have such a passion and fascination, and that is rare and will be missed.
To some he was annoying, to others entertaining and educational, but his passion lit up the space
he stood in. We've lost a flavour that only he could provide, though he did remind me a bit of
John Denver in how excited he could get about things...and his looks.
I pray for his family. The void that death brings to the living, momentarily can eclipse the joy of
                    a life.
                    Take Care,
                    Fieldthistle

He risked his life many times. It really was only a matter of time.
I am very sad to know of his death.

What makes this sad to me is that this was such an unlikely death. It is very sad and he will certainly be missed in our household.

In my opinion, he did more more good for the animal world than any bad that some might perceive. I think the guy was great and our whole family will miss his shows very much. Of course, every famous person is going to have people that do not like them for one reason or another.

I am sure he knew he would die young, playing with dangerous creatures.
To be honest with you, I am surprised it took this long for him to tangle with the wrong one.

While a very, very sad story, I do not admire those that make a fortune off of wild animals.
That stingray had every right to be left alone and in peace.
Mr Irwin was invading on its turf.
I had the same feelings when that weirdo got mauled by the tiger on stage.

Gee, Marlin Perkins hung in there for a long time. I remember one of his funniest shows, he was wrestling with a giant anaconda in some swamp and they didn't know he was in trouble and kept filming. I also seen him in an airport one time sneeking up on his aligator luggage. Chow Jim

That stingray had every right to be left alone and in peace.
Mr Irwin was invading on its turf.

Irwin wasn't bothering the string ray, though. From what I heard in a different news article, the sting ray was hidden in the sand and Irwin swam above him and the barb came up and pierced him in the heart. It is a tragic, tragic accident that never should have happened.

                                            RIP Steve.

A great tribute to the man. Thanks, roossy90, for sharing.

Life is not worth living if you don't take chances. Steve Irwin lived it every day. Although he was only 44, he lived a full life.

Steve Irwin was just like a nine year old boy. I have a nine year old boy, and a six year old one and a three year old one. They love to pick up snakes and worms and frogs, catch Monarch butterflies, watch birds, net fish, hunt with the cat (who is also a boy)...they are so excited about nature ~ all the different animals and plants, but also the power and scariness of life is something they are fascinated with. I think this urge for exploration is part of how they are learning to love and respect the world, and also how they learn to control themselves (for instance, learning to just look at the frog, and not squish it!). They loved the Crocodile Hunter. It was one of the few things I let them watch on TV. Crikey, we're all missing him at my house.

A sad twist to steve's untimely death

How could people take it out on the sting rays, it was just doing what was natural to a sting ray, it is a defense mechanism.
