At 8pm Sept 12th Weather channel is calling for landfall Wed. somewhere between Panama City and New Orleans. That's still a very wide range. It will narrow down as the storm approaches.
I have to comment about the Odd/Even day gas purchase during the 70's gas crunch. We had two cars, with plate # 4012 and 4013 , When we needed to make a trip to New Jersey in 1979 we carried them with us..and switched from odd to even as the day required. Most of the stations in Jersey and New York would only sell $5 to a customer (on the thruway and turnpike). In our big Suburban that was good for 60 to 70 miles or so, so we would get in line again and get another 5 or 6 gallons and keep on moving. At Midnite we would switch our plate to the opposite number and keep going.
One of you SoCal oldtimers... Did California do the odd/even? I used to ask my students to ask their parents about how they handled the shortage, and no one ever mentioned that as part of the action during either of the 70's shortage times.

Well, no power rules out cooking a grilled cheese sandwich on an upside down electric iron. A true "road" food trick we learned in the early '70's was cooking grilled cheese sandwiches on your car's engine - get a loaf of bread, cheese slices, Worcester sauce if you're feeling fancy, and a roll of tin foil. Assemble the sandwich, wrap in foil, pop the hood and lay it on your car's manifold. If you're driving, be sure to wire it on loosely with a coat hanger wire, drive for 7 minutes, no more no less, and it's ready! If you're parked instead of on the run, allow about 5 minutes - bon appetit!

Mr Mayor; Yes Calif. did do the odd-even thing with gas rationing in the 70's. They also used green flags to denote stations with gas available. I made a trip to Frisco from Fresno during this time, there was a rule about being more then 150 miles from home. I wasn't technically that far and told the attendent so. He didn't care and sold gas to me on the "wrong" day anyways. Bless him!
