Does anyone remember Sputnick gum? It came out around the time of the spaceship Sputnick in the 60s.It was a round gumball, bright light blue in color with sparkles coating it.Used to buy it at the penny candy store.Best gum I have ever tasted!

I somewhat remember someone giving me a candy that looked and tasted like a sugar cube with a flower design on it in the mid 60's. I think the brand was called Mind Candy. After one, the thought of having another did not occur, in fact very few thoughts at all occurred.

It did make music taste funny, gave my dog the ability to speak incessantly as well as turning him purple for about 12 hours. The product must have been a failure as I have not seen it since. It certainly was a strange candy though.

LOLing at sugar cube strange candy.

The rocket/sputnik gum references remind me of Space Food sticks. UGH. Did anyone eat these? The peanut butter ones were especially repulsive.

And this reminds me of Great Shakes. A 60s CD I want to order from Amazon has several original commercial jingles for this product, with various bands performing. Cool!

I used to work at a casino that had a lot of Asian employees, and they would sometimes give me candies from NYC's Chinatown. These usually had a picture of flowers on the wrapper and tasted literally like...well...flowers.

OMIGOSH. I had completely forgotten those ever existed. With that strange, bendy, almost rubbery texture. . .

I was crazy for anything space-related at the time. Which explains why I ate Space Food Sticks for so long.

My favorite all time candy is Li Hing Mui. Most people here in Minnesota does not know what it is because it's like a candy unique to Hawaii. When I moved here I could not find it anywhere at all, like I said most people didn't even know what I was talking about. Now I buy it online at snackshawaii.com. Their the cheapest site I found with cheap shipping. You'll either love it or hate it cause it is a aquired taste, but being raised in Hawaii I love this stuff. I'm trying to find Li Hing Mui margaritas too, but can't find it anywhere, but I know they make it cause they serve it in Hawaii clubs.

And this is probably more a snack than a candy, but has anyone had that Chinese dried and salted plum called Li Hing Mui? I got hooked on it when we lived in Hawaii. They're intensely salty with a hint of sweetness. Just thinking of it has me drooling on my keyboard.

The absolutely most bizarre candy I ever encountered was the Star Wars Jar-Jar Bink pushup pop.
It looked like head of that repulsive character mounted on a handle.
When you pressed on the trigger in the handle Jar'Jar's head flipped open to expose a huge, erect candy tongue.
You had to French Kiss Jar-Jar to eat the candy.....

Ok, here's one, just got it out of our vending machine: Reese's Elvis Commemorative Peanut Butter & Banana Creme cups.

It tastes sort of like a banana Moon-Pie collided with the chocolate and peanut butter. Not bad, just odd.

I'm gonna have to say that I agree with the people that said Jelly Belly Jelly Beans...the buttered popcorn flavor has got to be one of the worst things ever! It makes me want to ralph just thinking about them!

Other odd candies:

These Japanese hard candies that I think are supposed to taste like Grapefruit..but whenever I have them with other people, we all taste something different...they sell them at Mohegan Sun in the gift shop.

The buttered popcorn is better than the vomit flavored or earswax flavored bertie bots from Jelly Belly.

Besides mix the rootbeer flavor and the buttered popcorn flavor and it is almost like caramel corn.

One confection that I absolutely can not eat would have to be chocolate truffles ... and I've never had one that was edible to me.

There seems to be a coating or ingredient used in their preperation that tastes like soap to me. I have never encountered this flavor in any other chocolate in a chocolate assortment or other candy ... not in the cremes or the nugats or any other ... too bizarre.

I actually have to spit out the piece if I bite into one and wash my mouth out ... it's that bad.

The only other place that I've noticed that horrible flavor is in the glaze on fruit tarts (that would be the little tart shells that have fruit in them that has a shiney glaze ... and also in some petit-fours, though not (I don't think) the ones covered with regular cake frosting or fondant.

I don't know if this could be "confectioners glaze" because there is all kinds of chocolates that seem to have a shiney sort-of glaze that are fine.

If anyone knows what this mystery ingredient could be I'd sure be interested to know.

Couple years ago at halloween we gave out gummy facial parts (ears, noses etc) and eyeballs. It was a *huge* hit with the kids ... actually had kids showing up and saying "are you the house giving out the eyeballs?". I guess good news travels fast?
