Are these franks all beef, or beef and pork? If they are the German style beef and pork franks, I'd love to trade you some of these for some Thumann's. If they are all beef, I can trade you some Best's or Boars Head.

Bill, From what I have read, apparently there's an old guy named Mr. Clyde over near The French Quarter on Poydras Street - he runs Paradise Vendors - who just fired one of his sales people. You might well be able to obtain that person's job; just don't get your hot dog cart's front wheel stuck in the St. Charles Avenue streetcar track or store any cats in the bun compartment. ORT, that is an attractive Plan .Not sure what my wife and kids might think of the idea, however. You might have meant that missive for Skip, but never look a gift horse, etc. I was more interested in whether there's a signature New Orleans dog, something spicy & rich, or do they serve regular old hot dogs.? I know there's Boudain, but in a stand? On a Bun? Or maybe there's Crawdad sausages with dirty rice as a topping.

Zweigles from Rochester are tasty morsels ... I use to work at a place in East Aurora NY called Chet's Dog House .. That is how I put myself through my first 2 years of college ... we served hot dogs made by Freys of Buffalo. They since have sold to Worlinski's. Those are not too bad. For me I stand by Zweigles and Hoffmans. I am heading to buffalo for the holidays and Steve, I will take you up on that offer. Will obtain some Zwiegles to send to you. I have brought back 15 lbs of dogs and served them to my office mates. Not very many women sit down and eat two or more dogs ... not in my office. Those folks at those 15 pounds down like a dog with a bone and wanted more. Yes I agree on Teds with mustard - weber mustard that is. The perfect dog is with kraut, mustard and onions! I am leaving the corporate world of being an Executive Director of an international nonprofit to go sell dogs. My mother thinks I am nuts, but my friends are pumped. Glad I found this site ... it will make my mother think I am more than nuts. Cindy

Littlewurst, Zweigles are tasty, but they are more like a bratwurst than a hot dog. Hofmann's are good also, but a little mild for my taste. A real good hot dog available in the Hofmann's area is from Liehs & Steigerwald. A guy from this forum, Cosmos, mentioned them. He gave me their website (which I can't recall) and I ordered a pound of them. They are big, juicy, and full of flavor. The best frank from a butcher shop that I've sampled. The only beef and pork dog that I like as much or more is Thumann's. If you get the chance, try these dogs. I also hear that their bratwurst is excellent.

quote:Originally posted by bill voss Thanks, CSD. I've never been to New Orleans. Street Carts weren't a part of my KC upbringing. I don't think they were allowed, so I'm always interested in how other cities handle them. What about the steaming mentioned in the 2nd review? Is that the case most places? Bill When I was a child in KC, there were street carts sometimes around the pawn shop area of 12th street. Tamales, ice cream and once in a while, a hot dog cart. There were always 3 carts in front of the big Sears at 15th and Cleveland. The same tamales, ice cream and hot dogs. My mother would never let us get anything from the carts. She was sure we would die of food poisoning. So of course, it made the allure all the greater. Now there are a number of carts downtown at peak times, when there are conventions, and some hot dog and sausage carts around all the public buildings, City Hall, the County Court House, etc. I feel they're pretty safe, the city highly regulates the standards. The ones that I've had that I especially liked, have been steamed and then browned on a small flattop of some sort. I've tried to talk to a couple of the vendors, but they haven't been too keen on giving any information about how they're doing things.

hi ya Z, We always ate at either Macys, Jones, Emery Bird, or Wolferman's when we went Downtown to shop. I don't remember those carts at all, though I now realize Mom probably was steering us away from Time to Read& the pawn shops. We just as frequently went to Argentine or "the Avenue"(downtown KCK). I faintly remember a tamale cart in Argentine; they were cigar sized, not fatboys. I just don't remember hot dogs as being among the dining cuisine of KC at all. Burgers, Q & Mexican, were our normal dining out fare. Sausages were for home use only.

Hey Bill, Kresge's downtown had great hot dogs. They were the skinny, but tender kind. My mother wouldn't let me have them there, either. I had to wait until I was old enough to shop downtown alone. We ate at all the major stores, my grandmother worked at Emery Bird, so we ate there from time to time. The big Sears was east of downtown right off Truman Road. They sold hot dogs inside, at a snack bar. They didn't have nearly the great aroma as the ones from the cart in front. The carts that are now downtown are around Barney Allis Plaza on the west side of downtown and around the civic center on the east. I saw a taco cart once!
