April 9th is my 50th birthday. A trip to Stroud's seems like the perfect gift to myself. Unfortunately, I have neither the time nor the funds to make such a delightfully frivolous trip. If you do get a group together for the 9th, hoist one for me as you tuck into that fantastic chicken!

Let me know how this compares with the original Stroud's - I'm thinking of going there for my birthday at the end of the month.

CNW and I met at Stroud's for supper this evening.

Monday was opening day, and the waits that evening were reported as being 2.5 hours. CNW wouldn't be able to get to the restaurant until about 7:30PM this evening, so I went about 6PM and put my name in for a table. They said then, that it would be about a 1.5 hour wait.

The interior makes a small effort to resemble the Kansas City location, but this building falls short of the charm of the other Stroud's locations.

After taking a few interior photos, I went back outside for a fairly pleasant wait, chatting with other patrons waiting to get in.

About an hour and twenty minutes later, they called my name, and CNW arrived within the next 5 minutes.

The menu appears the same as the other Stroud's, though it does not list any of the history.

The kitchen was slower than I have experienced in the past. But that was understandable and we had plenty to talk about. In addition to our shared interest in food and travel. CNW tuned out to be a science fiction reader. Some of you may have already guessed what my handle sfreader stands for.

Our server was very good. I think she brought me 3 root beer refills.

To my taste, the food was much like the other locations. The servings were less generous, but still more than most people will eat.

    CNW with his salad

my chicken noodle soup - outstanding as always

CNW had a three breast dinner with mashed potatoes, I had chicken gizzards and cottage fries

cinimon rolls (CNW had already grabbed one :-)

    my leftovers

For those of you unfamiliar with Stroud's that may look like a lot of leftovers, but it is less than I am used to in the past. Even the boxes are smaller.

In the photos, it appears that the median customer age is 60 years old. Is that typical at Stroud's?

I'm 53 and of the people that interacted with me while waiting outside, only one was older than me. And that one said he was only there because his children were in town from California and really wanted to eat there. He would have otherwise waited a few weeks.

I noticed several families with children arrive, go in, find out how long the wait was, and leave.

In the restaurant, I did notice a high percentage of walkers and wheelchairs last night. Perhaps the younger folks didn't have the patience for the wait, or weren't as foolish as us older folks:-)

I haven't been aware of the crowd being older at the other Stroud's I have visited.

    Sadly,

I notice that at most (notice I didn't say all)roadfood establishments, and that's because many of the younger folks are either at TGI-APPLE-CHILIS
or at the "Let's pretend we're in Soho" restaurants....which by Soho standards are about a decade or two behind the times anyway.

    Keith-
That for the report and the great photos! Glad to hear you had an overall good experience. My recent trip to KC made me remember just how great a place Stroud's truly is. I will absolutely be eating there again on my trip in July, but will most likely stick to the older location.

By the way, on my recent visit to the Oak Ridge Drive location, I might have been the oldest customer there at 45. But then, it was late at night, just before they closed.

My perception of Stroud's has always been that of a family place. It definitely is not a hangout for the hip crowd, but I don't think of it as a senior citizen's haven either. They welcome with open arms whoever walks in the door and is willing to wait the usual 1 to 2 hours before being seated.

Thanks for the report, sfreader. The space looks pretty good, considering it was a bakery, then a Mexican place.

It was also a Waid's Family Restaurants and at least one other.
