Stupid, lazy, incondiderate?

Here's the deal. The last six topics I've clicked on to read here at Roadfood.com have extended beyond the width of my computer screen by links posted somewhere within the topic. If I wish to read the topic, I must scroll back and forth across the screen. I don't like doing that. I disrespect anyone who does like doing that. I envy anyone who does not have to do that because their monitor obliges them. I love the links. I love to go to places on the net I've never been to before. There are only three possible reasons this happens. 1. Stupid / Ignorant Wow! You can shorten a link? How? Wow! Look at that! http://masl.to/ It creates a shorter (i.e. less wide) link. It stands for "make a shorter link." 2. Laziness Yeh, the dude just taught me how to do that but it's such a pain to do all that. 3. Inconsiderate I just don't give a damn if the next person reading this has to use up his index finger to get through the topic, who care's? And for those of you who drive automobiles (roadfood... cough, cough,) those same three principles apply to the proper use of turn signals. If you don't do it, you've got one of three outs. Pick one. I'm stupid, I'm lazy, I'm inconsiderate. Consider yourselves warned. I'll be back... maybe?

Or maybe people just don't realize this is happening or don't know how to do some of the things you suggest or have a monitor that makes it hard for them to know what will fit on your screen or are perplexed by the fact some links will wrap, while others will not. Maybe, just maybe it was one of these things and not an attempt to cause you such anguish and heartache. Your "lesson" could have been a tutorial instead of an accusation. I leave you to contemplate the subject of your thread and decide why it wasn't.

While I agree that the thread title is a bit over the top, it is a valid observation. There's also the issue of pictures being posted that are approximately the size of Nebraska. If you're using Windows, it comes with Paint. In which you can resize anything you want to a manageable size. It is not required that you use pictures the size they come out of your digital camera.

Gatorbreath is probably correct in his observation but his response was awful. Those of us who have difficulty in posting does not deserve to be called the names. Another way to shrink pics is by using irfan which can be downloaded for free, and I have found to be very user-friendly. Just search it on the net. It makes a red blob icon on your desktop.

I can't help observing that whoever made it so you have to side-scroll about eight inches in this thread was being petty and childish.

In order to shorten links, you have to know the specific formatting for this software. (In order for this mini-tutorial to appear properly, I had to reverse the brackets in the description; otherwise, the software formats it. So, I put the close bracket at the beginning of the url and the open bracket at the end.) Let's say I wanted to link to the main page of CNN; http://www.cnn.com/. The way to format that so it appears asCNN's website is like this: Part one is (note the inversion of the brackets) ]url="http://www.cnn.com/"[. Don't forget the quotation marks around the url; that is what tells the software to shorten the link. Part two, after the brackets, is 'CNN's website' Part three is . So (again, note the inversion of the brackets) ]url="http://www.cnn.com"[CNN's website will appear as the clickable link CNN's website (when you put the brackets back in the proper places, [] instead of ][). Just don't forget the quotation marks around the url in the formatting and you'll be ok, no need to use third party shorteners. Tom

A lot of newer forum software will do just waht you described with a couple of clicks. Old is comfortable, but new is often easier!

From the movie Body Heat: Matty: [to Ned] You aren't too smart. I like that in a man. Ned: What else do you like? Lazy? Ugly? Horny? I got 'em all. Matty: You don't look lazy.

How to mess up a topic 06/28/2005 11comments 676 views Posting Long Links 03/03/2005 4comments 574 views Here's the real deal. Upon encountering six topics in a row on Roadfood/forums which extended beyond the width of my standard sized monitor and required me to scroll back and forth across the screen to read, I issued the original post in this thread. All six of those instances were caused by people posting utile links. which despite their utility, were exceedingly long. This was not my first attempt to address this issue of posting long links. It was the third attempt. The first two (listed above) were a convivial, {hey, how ya doin', head noddin', don't want to piss nobody off, geez does anybody realize that posting a million character link produces a million character wide screen image?} type of deal. This last post was inspired by a page from my personal history. A group of anti-war protesters on my campus in the early seventies grew tired of the turnouts at their campus rallies. They proclaimed, unless enough people showed up at their next rally, a dog would die by nafarious means. Lots of people showed up and few of them were sympathetic to the protesters, but all claimed to know the issues involved. No dogs died. This is about awareness. This is about personal responsibility. I tried politely, two times, to make people aware of the consequences of posting links which IMHO rendered topics unreadable. If you think that scrolling back and forth is not a pain in the ass, I stand by my original thought and I disrespect you. I ain't into threatening dogs. In fact, I recoil at stooping this low to present this issue but the fact remains that I have presented it two prior times and still encounter six straight topics which post links that are toooooooooooooo long to fit on my screen. Therefore, I consider such posters as stupid, inconsiderate, or lazy. If they come up with a valid excuse, I'll apologise Also, format, schmormat, click on the link I provided in the original post and if you can't read, understand, and utilize it, pick 1, 2, or 3 and label thyself 1, 2, or 3. If you gotta analyze it or make a tutorial beyond that, count yourself as 1, 2, ... nevermind 3.. I'm not into political correctness on the third try.

I can't help but wonder what your screen settings might be. I am on this site a lot, usually on a cheap old lap top with a fixed setting of 1028X768. I can't recall 6 topics this month, let alone 6 in a row that caused this problem.

Well, not that it matters but I came across several today but I might just be a plain old dummy when it come to being adept on the computer. Whatever! If I have to scroll back and forth, I just do not read it. Life is too short and I am too old!
