Subway $1.99 sub of the month- Cold Cut Trio

Now we all know that the CCT at Subway sucks. We also know that there are much better sub places out there, and that they skimp on the meat, etc. Let's get beyond that for a second a figure out a way to make it edible and an overall solid lunch for 2 bucks. My experimenting today proved okay. I went with the Honey Oat bread which is pretty good. What you do is mask the meat by getting tomato, onions, olives, cucumbers, chipolte, mayo, oil & vinegar. Basically it's like a salad. Another masking agent would be a 25 cent bag of Utz sour cream and onion which I got at the grocery store and jammed inside the sub. Without some chips, this Cold Cut Trio suffers greatly. Just thought I'd give you guys some advice if you're in a pinch and need something cheap for lunch that's not too filling. Any other ideas?

I hit them a couple of times a month, same with Mickey D's, Wendy's, etc. I always order off the cheap menu while others are spending $6.00+. John

I think you are onto something. Perhaps you could take it home a deep fry it? Perhaps you could get a shot of Jack Daniels and numb your taste buds just before enduring the CCT? Perhaps you could not eat lunch at all and have two Lone Stars? ... just trying to help :)

$1.99?? Haven't seen prices like that since 1989 (and back then on their TV ads it was $1.69).

They must be getting desperate. I wouldn't eat at Subway even if they paid ME.

Hey guys... you're telling me you don't have a Sub of the Month in your area? I thought it was everywhere! They tend to rotate it between the cold cut trio, the meatball marinara, the seafood sensation, and the ham and cheese. $1.99 for a six inch.

In my area, what they are pushing is 2 --12" subs for $8.99 after 3 pm, and 3 --12" subs for $12.99/after 8 PM also... Thats not a bad deal, especially since I get their veggie, or roasted chicken subs every other day. If I do the 2/9 buck deal, I always get the roasted chicken, and not the veg sub, since the veg is 5 bucks for one. Adding chicken is a no brainer to me. I admit, I do like their breads. I always get the Parmesean Oregano bread.

They used to do sub of the month in our area. It seems to vary from shop to shop now, some have a daily special, some only push meal deals that aren't any cheaper than any other fast food. I did try a sub of the month once, I guess it was supposed to be ham. Wish I'd thought of the chip idea. I'd also like to know where to get that 25 cent bag of Utz. Next to impossible to buy a bag of chips for less than 85 cents. BTW - maybe a dose of that oral anesthetic gel would make it go down easier.

No "Sub Of The Month" here in NW Florida yet (although I will check later on today) - the most recent promo was the $3.99 "Daily Meal Deal" and on occasion they have a "3 foot-long subs for $9.99" special.

I like the ads on TV that compare Subway to Qizinos. The guy who points out,"Meat..no meat" is a hoot.

Make it a third on Firehouse - it's the only sub shop near me (even though 25 miles down I-10) that has a corned beef & pastrami sandwich. It's not Katz's, but here in the Florida hinterlands, it will suffice!

Never had Firehouse subs. My sammich of choice is at Jimmy John's. More food than Subway for less money, and it tastes better, plus they deliver, for free! What's not to like?

Well, a "full bag" is impossible to find at less than 85 cents, and that's usually generic brand. Then there's the personal sized bags which are about 69 cents at the least. The bags I'm talking about are smaller than the personal sized...they are like child's sized. They have bins of 25 cent Utz, various flavored, at Food Lion. They also have bins of Wise flavored and Lays flavored for 25 cents, right up near the registers.

Subway is the worst. I would rather eat at Quizno's or Togo's anyday.

Subway is everywhere--even places there are no Starbuck's like my little Arizona town where Subway is the only sub option (except for Safeway or make-it-yourself)--no Firehouse, no Quizno's. So I get a BMT occasionally on Thursday when that's the special (a 6" for $2.99). By the way, the one time I was at Firehouse--in Daytona Beach across from the Speedway while visiting the family who all live there--I had a meatball and added what the kid behind the counter assured me was the second hottest hot sauce lined up on the counter.

I eat Subway about 3/5 times a week. I get the veggie sub, or the roasted chicken. For 9 bucks for 2 subs after 3 PM, ...Like Jared says.... It is a decent meal for low/fat /low/calories. I need to trim fat and calories whenever I can. I surely aint no spring chickie anymore, as much I would love to lie to myself. I always have to watch my weight, and believe me, It is way ahead of me, and I cant catch up with it right now...So, I must have it on a leash. I like the Subway bread choices, and the low fat items. I dont go there to gorge myself. I go there for a low fat choice of something healthier to eat than gorging on what is available to me at my work or any other FFR on the way in. To be honest, I would eat a Firehouse corned beef or pastrami sub every day, twice a day. But I cant.

Firehouse is good, but not that good. Once a month is good enough for me. Give me a Publix deli sub (Boar's Head meats) anyday. Their pressed Cuban is excellent, but if you don't watch them they will try to sneak in some mayo...

Publix makes the best Cuban's (other than a Cuban restaurant)..... I wholeheartedly agree with Adjudicator. I wish there was one closer to me. Thats one thing I miss about Florida... is Publix. Next to my friends of course...

Next to my friends of course... Interesting. Last winter, just 'cause my Mom sent me to Publix for some things (she no longer drives) and I was hungry when I got there, I tried one of their Cubans. It was decent but I wouldn't drive any distance for one. I haven't had a Cuban in a long time but I remember the ones I used to get when I lived in Orlando (around 1980) as being better. It was an independent joint and I think the guy who ran it was actually Puerto Rican. My recollection is it was on East Colonial Drive, but it's surely gone now. My point is just that I've always thought Publix made OK subs but I've never understood the raves they get here. My model of a great sub is based on what I used to get in little joints in northeastern inner cities. I know there are a few Baltimoreans around here so maybe someone else knows what I'm talking about when I mention the etherial roast beef from a place that was in the basement of a row house in what is now Charles village called "the B & M" in the '60's. Back then, even the Baltimore chain Harry Little's made an excellent hamburger sub (4 burgers on the French loaf, mounds of grilled onions etc etc). Then there was Chris's Submarine Base on the Harbor in Annapolis; and a little joint on University Blvd just west of Georgia Ave. in Wheaton MD. Those were all legendary subs I tell ya.
