Oh, that maple cream pie looks wonderful.  It has been years since I have had anything like it.  I don't usually plan a trip to New England during the cold weather months, but that pie might force me to make an exception!

Excellent report WJ.  What could possibly be more New England than a sugar house?  But, didn't your time in Pittsburgh convince you that you should have gone with kielbasa on your poutine?

I have a feeling that pie may find itself on a top 10 list.

When I first visited Chez Vachon about 8 or 9 years ago, I went with the steak tips and haven't been able to get past them since.

By the way-on an aside I'm still waiting for Pamela's in Pittsburgh to start serving fries and colelsaw on their pancakes " />

Of course let me know if you make it to Vermont this winter!

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip report, WJ. In fact, one day when my manager was out, I showed all the photos on this (which are VERY nicely taken) to a colleague whose son lives in Burlington, VT, just to see if she knew any of the places. The only place she has been to is Chez Vachon, and she liked it very much. I would definitely do this same trip; you made it look so appealing! Snow and all!

Wow nice report WJ....Sparked old memories for me.  I had a long interesting breakfast at Eaton's way back in 1972 with soon-to-be-leaving students at what was then Royalton College (now defunct I believe).  While I don't recall the food, the talk over breakfast spurred me in a different direction in my search for a college to attend.

Considering that we won't be back in NYC this Thanksgiving weekend nor will we be visiting my brother and his family in Albany, we will be back in Vermont Friday night into Sunday over Thanksgiving weekend. We will almost be duplicating this trip from 5 years ago (there will not be a trip report) although We won't be going through New Hampshire (I won't be going anywhere NEAR Boston over Thanksgiving weekend)  and will substitute The Wayside for the P & H Truck stop and will also substitute Dot's Restaurant for Vermont Sugar and Spice.
Unfortunately I discovered that Simon Pearce doesn't serve their shepherd's pie for Sunday Brunch we will go there Saturday for lunch instead., as a result there will be some backtracking involved  (we will do the Vermont Country Store on Saturday but return for lunch at the Bryant House on Sunday) ,

Looking forward to the report Dale. We used to spend a lot of time around Killington and I really miss it.

Trivia question, what is illegal (a thing) in Vermont and 3 other states but pretty much legal in every other state?

Well, it used to be illegal to have more than one drink per person on a table in a bar/restaurant in Vermont.

I won't be doing a trip report, however I will be in a position to begin my end of the year report as this will be the last trip of the year  for me

Regarding the trivia question, we were just talking about this earlier in the week at work. I believe that while hunting a gun without a silencer is illegal in Vermont

VT did away with that a few years ago. I understand the rationale to prevent bulk ordering just before last call, but it forced the waiter or bartender to stand by holding your beer till you finished your shot if you ordered a beer and a shot.

Dale, that's interesting about the silencer but not what I had in mind.

Greg, no. Actually I used to order the sugar free version which obviously is fake. We used to visit Sugar & Spice a few times a year.

Trivia hint, one of the other 3 states is Alaska.

Offhand I'd say you have that just a little backwards. Vermont's governor signed into law this past summer a bill allowing possession of suppressors (silencers), and their use at sport target ranges -- only. Their use for hunting has never been allowed in Vermont (and in most states until recently). FYI: In addition to the state law allowing state residents to own them a federal license is required before you can own one. The federal license has been required since passage of the Gun Control Act of 1934, and could only be acquired if a person lived in a state where they were legal under state law.

No, bingo was the game show sound that leechef got the answer.  It's billboards. What reminded me is that view you had at Eaton's waiting for breakfast.

Wish Illinois has this...it's littered with billboards, regular and electronic.  Where's Lady Bird Johnson when you need her?

Do I get a prize for knowing the answer to the trivia question?  How about an all-expense paid trip to the four states........just to be sure?
