Sugar-butter?
Tue, 09/28/10 3:04 PM
( permalink)
For some reason I just remembered something I used to love when I was a kid, and I was wondering whether anyone else on Earth was dumb enough to have enjoyed it, too. I used to butter a slice of bread and then sprinkle sugar on the butter. That and a chocolate soda made with U-Bet chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer water (in a siphon bottle delivered by the case along with the syrup) made for my very favorite thing to eat at home.

Lots of butter on a slice of very fresh white bread, a liberal sprinkle of sugar, fold it in half = heaven....... when I was a kid many. many years ago. I don't think I have done that in 50 years. Hmm...Maybe I'll give it a try.

I loved butter and sugar sandwiches, one of my older brothers would eat about six a day...In senior year college he stood 6' 6", 265lbs, all muscle....I wonder if I ate more of them....?????

Real Seltzer! Those were the days. I added chocolate sprinkles (Hagels) to your butter sandwich instead of the sugar and enjoyed it that way. Learned that from a girl from Holland.

I always did it on toast, with powdered sugar. It makes icing.

I used to have it as close to dinner as possible so as to not have any room for dinner when my mother was cooking.

Yes, I remember doing that, except it was margerine, I think. (Also the cinnamon toast thing, too)

So funny! Haven't had that in years. My grandmother used to make that for me when I'd visit in the summer, only she would put a couple of fresh slices of tomato from her garden on it as well. Try it. You won't be disappointed I promise.

You guys were rich-----we spread butter so thin you could see through it and sugar was doled out one grain at a time.

A friend who I've known since I was 4, spread lard on some soft white bread and then dosed that with the sugar. He did have open heart when he was 48. It must have been the white bread. I was always told that was what oreo cookies used to be filled with.

I had butter bread and chocolate milk really often as breakfast when I was a kid. I wonder if the sugar step is a Yankee thing?

I used to eat those when I was a kid living in Dodge City, KS. Except we used bacon fat and sugar on home made white bread that Granny made. The best!!! David O.

Our grandma made these for us kids in the 50's, but on saltine crackers. Spread on the butter, sprinkle on the sugar, shake off the excess and goodbye.

Butter & Sugar sandwhiches were a mainstay of childhood in my area of the MS Delta. In the winter butter was kept out in a covered dish so it would spread easily on the bread. Summer it would melt, so it was kept in the refrigerator and tore the bread.

Butter and sugar on pancakes, waffles and french toast was my preference as a kid and it still tastes better than syrup to me!

Mr. Hoffman, That was the favoured snack of my middle sister when she was a kid, but see butter and sugar, I could understand, she would also take crisco shortening and lots of sugar and eat that. Gross.
