cavandre Near us we have a Super WM & Super Target across the street from each other. When we need more than groceries, we tend to go to Target. Not exactly sure why, but shopping in WM is a depressing experience to us. The Target seems brighter & cleaner. Plus, anything we've tried of Target's "Archer Farm" brand has been above-average to excellent. You are correct regarding the appearance of Target. The huge Target we have in Knoxville is super neat but their selection pales in comparison to Walmart. The new WM Super Centers are much nicer in appearance as comparted to their older stores. I'm curious about their produce department. Do they stock fresh arrugala and radicchio? If they do, I just might take a look. On the other hand, if this is more of an Iceberg Lettuce type of place, I am not interested.

I like iceberg lettuce. I don't like Wal-Mart or any other giant store. The whole experience makes my head swim.

On the other hand, if this is more of an Iceberg Lettuce type of place, I am not interested. If it is the super WM's you are referring to, I have found that they almost always have what you indicated plus 4-5 different kinds of mushrooms and tons of other things that I do not know what they are. I am not indicating that WM has some of everything but they certainly have far more than anyone else in Knoxville. Knoxville is not exactly the Mecca for high quality grocers as we only have Food City, Food Lion, Krogers and Walmart. They have a few others that are a bit far for me to travel and shop and they tend to be specialty places that are a bit more expensive and limited stock. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

To answer your original question without muddying it up with other issues, the main food items I buy at the Super Wal-Mart in our area are all from the bakery department. I must have made close to a thousand sandwiches for various events using their mini-croissants, mini-bagels and silver dollar rolls. They are a good quality for the price. Ours also carries some of the Muir Glen line of tomato products and although I don't use them, the prices are lower than other stores that carry them.

I dont go to WalMart very often, but there are several products I do pick up.Their coffee prices are at least $2.00 cheaper than the other stores, and Hebrew National got dogs are about $3.00 per package, as opposed to over $5.00 at others.

My husband and me got married last June, and had our wedding cake done at Walmart, and it looked and tasted wonderful! The leftovers disappeared the next day between us and our houseguests! I give it a 10!! And the price was right! IMO...everybody that is anti-Walmart for whatever reason.....feel free to shop elsewhere and pay more.......my mom has worked there for over 10 years and they treat her pretty darn good!!!!

I sometimes buy rice, and canned ham at Walmart. Few places around here sell canned ham, that I can find, and I like having it around. Don't know why, I just like to fry some up every now and again. If Amazon sold it I probably would buy it online A new Super Center is coming only about 12-15 minutes from my house. That is big news because there is really very few stores out here - mostly convenience stores with very poor selection even for a C-store.

I have no problem with Wal-Mart and their policies and politics, they employ a lot of local people and that's a good thing. My problem with the new Super Wal-Mart here (45 miles west of Chicago) is that they have a limited selection, the few times we have shopped in the food section we found that they did not carry most of the things we normally buy. Part of the problem is that they are probably 10-15 other food shopping options in a very close radius with several Jewels, Super Targets, Dominicks, Trader Joe, Woodmans, Fresh Market, Sam's Club, Costco, Meijer and a large independent market called The Blue Goose and a number of large ethnic stores that have moved into old Jewel or Dominick space. Woodmans is our main choice because of the huge selection, they have a 200,000 sf store dedicated to food and liquor. Woodmans has a large ethnic selection and since it's a Wisconsin based family chain, there must be 50 feet or more of cases for cheese options!
