Surcharge after the restaurant bill............

Hello! I am an American from Tennessee living and working in the P.R. of China in the city of Hangzhou, near Shanghai. My Chinese city is very modern and wealthy, so there are a lot of different restaurants and so on. There are also international hotel chains here, such as the Hyatt. Then there are other 4 and 5 star luxury Chinese hotels with several different restaurants inside. What irritates me about these hotel restaurants is that they add 15% to the price of the menu. For instance, I noticed an advertisement for a New Years Eve (Chinese New Year) buffet in one of the hotels for 688 RMB + 15% Service charge. This comes out to be 792 RMB. (there are 6.8 RMB to $1 USD, so the dinner was advertised for $100 plus 15%, but neglect to state the full price.) This 15 percent crap drives me up the walls. Their wait staff are not going to see this money besides the hourly rate that they are being paid (roughly 1 to 3 dollars per hour) and I do not want to figure out in my head how much things are (uh....the steak is 60, so 15 percent...hmmmm 10% of 60 is 6, plus half of 6 is three so that's nine, so the steak is really 69.) I have no problem with a place being expensive, just quote the G'damned price. Does any other country do this? As I said, most of these hotels are ran internationally, with some of the high end domestic places following their lead. I have never seen it anywhere else before. Why do they do this?

It's common here in Ontario Canada, but only for special occasions. Here you are expected to tip 15% on a regular meal so when it's a special event or a large crowd they just add it to the bill. That doesn't mean I like it any more than you do. Do they let you walk around like your a free man.

Bucksnort, TN right around the corner from us. Couple hollers away. LOL Never seen surcharge on Food. Seafood is Market price for Day. Gratuity added to bill for groups, always leave more. Thats me. I know how hard they work. I guess if I had to chase the Possum or Coon for a full 12 hours have to charge you more. LOL

I know it was common in the UK when I traveled back there in the 70's. It was called 'service'. If 'service' was included, it took the place of a tip. However, it was customary to leave a very small amount of money (maybe 1% of the bill) on the table if you were pleased with the service.
