Surprise New Sandwich in Pittsburgh

Was in Pittsburgh for the Pirates-Sox series this weekend.  My disappointment in finding Steel City Diner closed was made up for by a sublime new Pulled-Pork and Pierogi sandwich at the Fam-A-Lee BBQ site at PNC Park (left field food court).  Manny Sanguillen's stand in centerfield also has it on the menu; it has been named the "Pulled Pork and Pierogi Stacker."

Consisted of pulled pork, 2 potato pierogies, and carmelized onions (sweet and cold) which pulled it all together.  Served on a pretzel roll, heavy with salt.  Immediately nominated to my ballpark food Hall of Fame.

Was wondering if this was a ball-park adaptation of a local favorite, but it appears to be a food-service creation of Aramark, something that might just get this post deleted from this server if the damn sandwich did not taste so good.

For the moment, it looks like you have to go to the park to have a bite... here's the backstory:

Sounds very similar to the "Southside Slopes" Headwich served at Fat Head's Saloon:
Grilled "kielbasa topped with fried pierogies, American cheese, grilled onions, and horsey sauce."

If the "Pulled Pork and Pierogi Stacker" is half as good as the "Southside Slopes", I may try to get to a Pirates game someday.

The big question is; does buffetbuster know about this conglomeration?

The obvious question about that sandwich is where were the fries?  It must be health food then.  I have been to Manny's BBQ at PNC Park before, but I sure don't remember seeing that.  It sure sounds like it needs further investigation.  Buddy is right, it does sound very similar to the Southside Slopes sandwich at Fat Head's.

Thanks for the recommendation and welcome to Roadfood!  Did you eat anywhere else while in town?

It looks interesting. I'd try one. I've never had a pretzel roll. Are they soft or hard?

Michael - Pretzel rolls are soft.  Great for burgers.

The Flame BBQ does offer a pulled pork and pierogies combo, but I wouldn't say that this is a widespread local favorite.

Uh-oh, another example of the "Primanti-a-zation" of Pittsburgh.

Even as a proud native of the 'Burgh (Eighty-Four, "Little" Washington, and New Wilmington) I never grew up with the "meal-between-bread bit".

Then, the Strip wasn't exactly "touristy".  My first Primanti experience was back in the '80's when we visited my eldest while he was attending Carnegie-Mellon.  I asked for my fries and slaw on the side and my son was horrified:  "But you grew up here!"  "Yeah, but I never drove a truck or walked in the Strip - especially at night".

That said, even just the sight of the pretzel roll foments an atavistic watering in my mouth.  But, put those tasty Pierogies on the side and hand me a bottle of Scott's Sauce.

Well, the pierogies had potatoes in them, right?

I was at PNC Park on Saturday night and saw the Pierogi Stacker at Manny's. I sized it up, but decided to pass. I am not a Primanti's fan, so that's probably not news that the Stacker did not appeal. Love the regular pulled pork at Manny's, though. How much of my love is due to the quality of the sandwich and how much is due to the atmosphere, it's hard to say. But I don't think I have ever been to PNC and not got something from Manny's.

I'd buy one and dis-assemble it, eating the Pierogies on the side. Haven't seen Pretzel rolls for sale out here except in some restaurants. Like to get some for home use!

I am not sure about the pretzel rolls you guys have, but we serve them all the time and they are not soft. Kinda like a hard roll..
