Swans Down...Vanilla, walnut cookies

This might be a truly long shot but.... Years ago for a wedding gift. I was giving an old Swan's Down Flour cookbook (1930's) from a friend of the family. I'm not one for baking, I will cook all day but seldom bake. But being a newlywed I decided to bake all my Christmas gifts. I found a recipe for Vanilla Walnut cookies that only had a few ingredients. Just my style. Then you would roll the dough into a log (simple) wrap in wax paper and refrigerate. Then just slice roll into cookies, bake and enjoy. I have since about 20+ yrs. tried to find the recipe. Hubby kept book when devoiced for ransom for a towel, which I did not have...lol. Was hoping someone might have a recipe close to this. Or similar. Also same year made some Cranberry Pear jelly. Same thing very few ingredients and little work. But again cannot find a recipe. Try as I may. Any help is greatly appreciated Thanks Blohatchi

The fact that the dough was rolled and refrigerated makes those cookies "icebox cookies". Try searching for vanilla walnut icebox cookies.

I have an idea for you. Since Swans Down Cake Flour is now a product of Luzianne, why don't you try contacting them? It is possible they might still have a copy of your cook book (or know where you could get one) and could give you the recipe. See their contact page on their website: http://www.luzianne.com/talk_to_us.cfm?

Thanks for the responses. 6star thanks for the link. Funny thing is I use Luzianne Cajun seasoning for my wings and other things and cannot find that here in Mass. I brought a few containers with me when I left Florida. I have been looking for it. Had tried to find it on the web under it's name with no luck. So I was going to have a friend send me some. Now I can buy direct. Hope I have the same luck with the cookies. Thanks! Blohatchi

Looky what I found in my collection, The Latest Cookie Secrets, copyright 1934 by Swans Down Flour, Division of General Foods, Battle Creek, Mich. And on page 30, Vanilla Nut Icebox Cookies. It's not "a few ingredients", more like 8. If you'd like I'll transcribe it here. I hate to type, so you'll have to send me some cookies if you make them.

http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1710,148164-247195,00.html VANILLA NUT ICEBOX COOKIES 2 c. sifted flour 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 2/3 c. soft butter 1 c. sugar 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla 1 c. finely chopped walnuts, pecans or unsalted peanuts Step 1: On sheet of waxed paper, sift flour with baking powder and salt; set aside. In large bowl, with wooden spoon, or portable mixer at medium speed, beat butter until light. Gradually beat in sugar. Add egg and vanilla; continue beating until light and fluffy. Step 2: At low speed, beat in half the flour mixture; mix in rest, with hands, to form a stiff dough. Add chopped nuts, mixing to combine well. Step 3: Turn out dough onto lightly floured surface. Divide in half. With hands, shape each half into a roll 7 inches long. Wrap each roll in saran or foil. Refrigerate until firm, about 8 hours, or overnight before slicing and baking. (Roll of cookie dough may be stored in refrigerator as long as 10 days. Slice and freshly bake as many as desired.) Bake at 375 degrees on ungreased cookie sheets for 8-10 minutes.
