Sweet Tomatoes - Mon, 07/27/09 1:16 PM ( #1 )
My kids dragged me to Sweet Tomatoes over the weekend, and though I was hesitant, I ended up being impressed.

Nice salad bar with lots of choices, and decent-tasting (though rather thin on the meat) turkey chili. But the memorable dish was the chicken soup, which was well-flavored, not too salty, and had the right look and feel (I think of myself as something of an expert on chicken soup, having eaten it on every Jewish holiday for my entire life). All that was missing was the matzoh ball.

Surprisingly, I also liked the atmosphere at the place. How often do you go somewhere these days and hear classical music playing? Even my bank plays rock n' roll. But this Sweet Tomatoes, in Glenview, Ill., had Bach on the speakers when we came in. This is a major selling point for me. So was the price. Just $25 for our 2 kids, my wife and me.

We've been to the one on the Lombard - Downers Grove border.  We agree with your assessment.  I like the flattop pizzas.

In my area they're called The Soup Plantation.

It's walking distance so I go there occasionally.

<Do you actually think I walk?>

I really enjoy the soups and prepared salads.  If I wanted to make my own, I'd do it at home.

I don't like their pastas at all... overcooked and tasteless sauces.

Thanks -- I saw that chain after I posted. I should have looked harder. Oh well.

Their pastas really are disappointing, but I like their soups a lot.  Creamy tomato comes back October 19 for a week.  Mmmm!

We go to the Sweet Tomatoes in St Charles, Il about 4 times a year. It seems to be well managed and cared for, items always look fresh and not picked through. We just stick to the salads and sometimes will have soup depending on what's offered that day.
