Sweet little dive in Aynor SC

Gore's Bar-B-Que & Country Kitchen.

Stopped in today after finishing some business in Aynor. Sadly, arrived at 3:00 and they were preparing to leave. But Mr. Gore fixed me a BBQ sandwich and Mrs. Gore poured me a glass of tea - and at the height of good old Southern Hospitality it was all on the house.

I had to use both hands to hold the sandwich and still some meat escaped the bun; there was enough piled on to make three sandwiches! Vinegar/pepper based but not too hot. Smoke flavor shone through.

Mrs. Gore rattled off a long list of comfort food they have on their menu and added that tomorrow she was also serving pig tails because some of the local Mexican folks had requested it. Mr. Gore chatted away, obviously happy with his success.

They've been in operation for twelve years.

Don't let the very rustic exterior dissuade you. Try it! I will go out of my way to return.

Gore's Bar-B-Que & Country Kitchen. 818 N. Main Street in Aynor SC.
Open for lunch M-Sat says Edward Gore, owner and cook. Close at 2:00.

friendly people...he once catered for Jimmy
Carter by the way. I've got to get back up

Super! When y'all go, please tell them Ellen from Columbia wrote up a nice review and you saw it.

I have a couple of shots of the building (wish I'd photographed the folks) if someone would tell me how to post them. They're hosted on Photobucket.

Look at the pics on Photobucket, below them are 3 choices. Click on the 1 that has img, I think it is [img] it will automatically copy into your clipboard. Then edit your post and paste that img into the post.

Or spend a few bucks to support Roadfood.com and become an Insider and host the pics here.

Dang, this is North of I-26, I was/am planning on taking 26 to 95 on down to Fl next month.

Are there any decent motels/hotels around here? We need a place for the night. I could just come down 95 all the way.

    Thanks MikeS.

Aynor is on 501 about 30-35 miles off I-95. There are plenty of hotels at 95 in that area (Kinda between Dillon and Florence.)

Why not take 26 one way and 95 the other? (Dang I hate 95.)

So, I decided to hit Gores for lunch..
    What a tiny little treasure.
Walked in, and Henrietta Gore was sitting there doing a crossword.
I mentioned Ellen and her post here, introduced myself and Roadfood, and said I would love to get some BBQ Sandwiches. Asked about a menu, and she said, "We dont have menu's", and pointed to a sign on the wall>
I asked about the ribs, and she said, you have to call ahead and he will make some, but they arent always available.. Not much call out for them.. but he will make them if you ask...

Your choice of Buffet/Dinners, BBQ sandwiches, catfish, shrimp and something else.
    BBQ sandwiches $3.25...Cant beat it...
She got up to make me a couple, and I asked if I could take her photo along with the buffet behind the line.. Actually, it isnt a buffet, but a small spread of items.

Items today were fried chicken, smothered chicken in gravy, pork chops, rice, pinto beans, macaroni and cheese, green beans (FRESH), and one other item. I think it was smoked sausage.
Asked me if I wanted slaw on my sandwiches, and told her, since its my first time, I will take it on one, and leave the other one nekkid..
    Cracked her up..
    Truely charming woman.

When I was behind the line taking the photos, she asked if I ever had a corn fritter and said yes, and she said "Not like these"..
Put one on a plate.... they were thin as crepes, and delicious.
I told her I bet they are really good with that smothered chicken gravy, and she proceeded to put some on there for me.
Oh, YUM.......I could have eaten 3 or 4 of them!
She tells me of a woman that gets 4 fritters.. 2 on the bottom, collard greens in the middle and the other 2 on top to make a sandwich..
Mentioned that fried chicken, Q, pork chops, fritters, mac n cheese are ALWAYS on the dinners, but the veggies change....

All the while she kept asking if I wanted some tea..
I mentioned how good the chicken looked and that I would have to come back for some of that, she said "You want a piece??"..
They couldnt have been more friendlier!

When I was getting ready to leave, in comes Ed.. "The cook", as Henrietta refers to him. "He is the cook around here".

I introduced myself (again) to him, and mentioned Ellen, and he gave me a big hug and planted a kiss on my cheek. He totally remembers Ellen stopping in.
Then before I got to the front door, he handed me a HUGE vine ripe red as can be tomato!..
Henrietta was getting ready to can them, and had 2 large boxes of them...
    What a treat!
I surely will be back to visit this lovely couple. They are the salt of the earth, wonderful people. I bet they can tell some stories..

    Ed and Henrietta Gore

Ellen was right on the mark about the vinegar peppery flavor..Great taste......Made my day by going there.
And I can go there and back in 45 minutes.....

This place looks like a real gem. And the food looks so good. With owners as nice as these two obviously are, you really root for them and want their business to do well.

As Al knows...... I would die for a BBQ Place like that here in Victorville. I am getting
better at my own BBQ. I retire from my "Real" job in 2010. I so want to open a BBQ place
and do it just like the Gores. And like my Grandma ran her Cafe. I really miss some good
BBQ! Thanks for the great pictures Ya'll

Living in Columbia, I rarely get to Aynor. A few months ago my husband, pup and I managed to be there on a Sunday. Figured they'd be closed, and sadly, I was right. The building did look to be occupied - the restaurant still in business... I hope! Anyone know?

Guess we're going to have to make the effort for a serious BBQ road trip soon...

They're closed on Sundays. The hours of operation are listed in your original post.
