THE BEST corn dog you ever had?

I love corn dogs! I like them with plain old yellow mustard put on some paper and the dog rolled in the mustard so that you get a thin even layer.

My criteria for the pefect CD. A good quality beef and/or pork dog, no poultry allowed. A slightly sweet corn batter fried to a golden brown. The batter HAS to be cooked through and the dog has to be hot. I want to see that puppy frying, no heat lamps allowed.

THE BEST I've ever had came from a lady that had her own business in Fresno. She worked the Fresno Grizzlies AAA ball club at Beiden Stadium my last 2 or 3 years in Fresno. I worked for the Grizzlies those last 3 years. I forget her name and the name of her business. She always served a superior product. But since I won't be back to Fresno any time soon...

I have found some pretty good ones at the Frederick Co. Md. fair the past few years. This usually safes the year for CDs.

Corn dogs are a reminder that you can't have everything. While New Jersey is profound with all sorts of great hot dogs, alas, we are corn dog deprived. The best corn dog I ever had was at a fair whilst in college, in Iowa,

It was sometime back in the very early 70s. I was at a college basketball tournament. I'd never had a corndog befroe or even seen such a thing, but I was starving, as I usually was during college, and decided that the weird looking dog on a stick the guy next to me was eating looked pretty good so I went and got one.
Damn if that wasn't the best tasting hotdog I'd ever had!
I like regular hotdogs, but corndogs are the best thing you can do to a hotdog.

I've never liked corndogs, but I liked the one I got at Fletcher's.

Come to think of it, maybe I just liked it because I was supposed to like it... I believe we had also snuck in a bottle of Jack, for emergency purposes, so that may have contributed to my acceptance of this anomaly.

    Been there and done that

That is why sliders are so good at 3:00AM. Come to think about it, corn dogs would probably be just as good. I happen to like a good hot fresh corn dog covered with a light mustard.

When we race the NHRA circuit and I am out and about the food court, I always watch for one of the vendors that I trust to pull out some hot fresh dogs. They are the best at that moment.

Haven't had one myself, but word has it that the much revered Hot Doug's, here in Chicago, serves up a brilliant high quality version. If Doug does the Corn Dog with the same attention to detail as every other item on his menu, I believe he has the winner, hands down.

We had a place here in Huntsville, AL, called Zestos and they made the best "dip dogs" in town (long gone now). They were very flavorful and crunch. They also did a Zesto Burger which was a hamburger patti dipped in corndog batter and deep fried like a corndog. Very, very good and I have never seen this done anywhere else. The dip dogs and burger were best with only mustard.

Zesto's still alive & well in Atlanta area. Corn dogs even there are mediocre. The problems with corndogs as I see them is that the batter is always way to sweet & thin and the hotdog underneath is always of poor quality. I have often wondered what a quality kebalsa or even a good brat would taste like under some really good 'n thick authentic cornbread coating. Please pass the mustard....

instead of rolling the dawg on the paper, try using a 2 inch bbq brush, and "paint" the mustard on!

Maybe this isn't totally related, but here goes. When my kids were small (the oldest is 40 now), we rented a motorhome in Chicago to visit our kid's old baby-sitter who was now a student at Southern Ill Univ. Somewhere on the way down in a small town, we stopped at a corner restaurant to eat. May have also been a bowling alley in the building. They took a giant-sized lobster tail, battered it and deep-fried it, just like a giant breaded shrimp. I never saw this before and never saw it since, but I remember it like it was 2 days ago and I'm salivating right now. It was absolutely delicious. Beats a corn dog any day.

Even though they stink here in NJ, i still love to have one every now and then at fairs and festivals. I had one at a Somerset Patriots baseball game recently and was disappointed as it was still cold in the middle. I guess it came out of the freezer! Of course i still ate it!

I don't mean to boast, but yesterday, I ate an original Pronto Pup at the original inventors most recent home location in Otis, Oregon (across the highway from the world famous Otis Cafe). This was no corn dog, my friend. This was a effort of love and caring. I wish our camera batteries hadn't been dead. The Pronto Pup (the "restaurant", but it is very bare bones), is very homespun, two older women, focused on what they did best, running the place. Do not bother with the rest of the limited menu. I only say this because you have to have the Pronto Pup and you will not have room in your stomach for anything more. I ordered two quarter-pound dog size Pronto Pups to go. I asked the woman how long, "eight minutes", was her practiced and polite reply.

    Fast forward to the Pup:

Huge. Mahogany Brown. No Grease. Hot as Hell. Crunchy. Sweet. Salty.

Ate it down to the nubs of deep-fried, splashed back corn meal on the stick(s).

    I love you, Pronto Pup.

I couldn't agree more regarding the corn dogs in Otis. If you're ever passing through do yourself a favor and enjoy one of the top corn dogs on earth.
