Krispy Kreme - most overrated food fad of the last 20 years. Those doughnuts are horrible, IMHO.

I really like the appearance of the new KK stores. I also like the way they have glassed in the doughnut factory. They have a unique way of keeping the doughnuts moving while they are rising.

I find the aroma that is emitted while they are frying is almost impossible to pass up.

Even more than that, I find the hot original simply irresistible as the deceased Palmer would say.

Krispy Kreme original glazed donut / no doubt about it you can't find a better one. They remind me of a certain potato chip you can't eat just one!

I ate six KK's once. That ain't a smart thing to do as they tend to get larger as time goes on. Great going down but after about 30 minutes ?? ouch

My sentiments exactly. They can't hold a candle to some of the local mom n pop donut shops here in Southern New England. Especially Allies.

Agree completely. Too bad we can't arrange a blinded taste test and hopefully prove the point to the KK faithful.

We have had our Krispy Kreme for years. Unfortunatley it seems to attract all of our homeless persons. Not that I'm downing the less fortunate, it's just a little scary, and unattractive. We're able to buy Krispy Kreme's at some of our local grocers, there just not the "flashing hot donuts now" variety. In steps the microwave.

You guys are in a definite minority on this. There might be some others that come close to the cake or even the cold glazed KKs, but I haven't found anything in the same league with those "HOT NOW" pillows of sugar coated air with a little pastry taste and texture eaten within 10 minutes after they come off the line. I grew up with KK (near Winston Salem) and have loved them for 64 years! I'm glad that the rest of the world is having heaven opened to their taste buds.

    Hillbilly,

That's the problem, they taste like sugar coated air! Try a plain cake donut from Allies if you're ever in Rhode Island. In fact I'll buy! Now theres a real substantial donut!

Its called Clustered Spires Bakery, A little off the beaten track But I feel worth the effort. Great rich heavy donuts and good everything else .
That being said there are times when I want a lighter KK or Dunkin

You were the smart one...I missed the boat and not sure I want to get in now that it is at $36.55. We do enjoy the visit to the local one and the one in Winston when we areover that way. Had one of their Key Lime ones?

Rockville Maryland happens to be home to the best doughnut in DC--Montgomery Doughnuts. KK is ok, but nothing compared to the real thing. Montgomery is a real old fashioned doughnut, probably like the kind in New England, and is considered among old timers the thinking man's Krispy Kreme.

RE: THE "HOT" LIGHT IS ON IN ROCKVILLE, MD !!!!! 2003/12/21 19:24:28 (permalink)
Well, as I had hoped for, we made it on Saturday morning (12/20). The Clustered Spires Pastry Shop in Frederick, Maryland is a great find! Like Argent said (and thanks for the recommendation !), the place was a haven for homemade, heavy, cake-like doughnuts with the icing literally drizzled on. They had great dunkers (I know there's a PA Dutch word for the same that the shop also used but I am w/o my German spell-check today ), sticky-buns, muffins, cookies, cakes and breads. Although it is oddly located amongst an amalgamation of various industrial-zoned businesses (and is contained in a mock lighthouse, oy vey), it is worth the trip. We look forward to getting a future cake at the Clustered Spires as their portfolio of the same was quite impressive.

On an end-note, however, I did want to bring-up one possible clarification. While this thread has contained its fair share of Krispy Kreme bashing, one thing should be noted. The only Krispy Kreme product that should be used as a comparison of other doughnuts is KK's FRESH, HOT ORIGINAL GLAZED RIGHT OFF OF THE PRODUCTION BELT.

All other comparisons are apples to oranges arguments (read: KK products produced earlier or from a store shelf simply aren't worth walking across the street for).

I'm a native New Englander living in the south. I treasure heavy, cake-like doughnuts like those once () made at Mike's in Everett, MA or the still-crankin' Kane's in nearby Saugus. But, truly, if I was given the option of ANY doughnut and a HOT ORIGINAL GLAZED KK RIGHT OFF OF THE BELT, I'd opt for the Krispy Kreme product any day of the week.

So, there you go in this pontificator's mind, Krispy Kremes win if you're lucky enough to have a location where you can buy 'em hot. If not, thank God that there's still a number of quality doughnut houses making products that still taste great 100 miles down the road after buying them (which is what KK lacks).

    There ends my thesis.

    Argent here,
Glad you enjoyed The Spires Bakery, My place of work in not far from it.So I force myself to stop in two or three times a week. Some hard ships we are forced to put up with.
They call the dunkers you reference, Kinklings. I dont know the origin of the term.
