There is a taco truck directly across the lot from TB.  Most every kind of taco is about $1.75 average.
Austin is taco heaven, yet I can't seem to find anything close to a Mission burrito unless I go to Chipotle, but they don't make tacos. I am willing to wager that TB is looking at a similar (marketing) direction and make 'authentic' L.A.Food Truck(TM) tacos, and if they started making true burritos, they would redeem themselves from the current opinion of what does go into their beefy offerings.
If Chipotle did tacos, I am pretty sure that they would be authentic enough for the masses.

Seriously!  I served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in south Texas and I ate AMAZING Mexican food for 2 years.  I've heard that Taco Bell doesn't exist in Mexico after a few failed attempts.  For good reason too.  The quality is nothing compared to actual authentic Mexican Food.  The meat is better, the tortillas are thicker, the rice and beans are not so processed and artificial tasting...now I'm getting too excited, I may go get some real Mexican food later tonight.   Anyways, yeah, Taco bell fits the description of an American fast food chain.

In Dallas, we're fortunate to have plenty of small mom 'n pop taco joints serving 100% made from scratch tacos for $1.00 to $1.25 at the most.
Many are located in gas stations and some are just free standing units.
My personal faves are chicharron, al pastor and barbacoa. Stuffed in home made soft corn tortillas they always have plenty of onions, cilantro and home made green or red hot sauces. These little taco joints sell nothing more than tacos. Usually about 7-8 different kinds. Best meal in Dallas for the money.

Only a few years ago Fuzzy's Taco opened their first store near TCU in Ft. Worth.  Even during these horrible economic times, they have literally EXPLODED.  Presently, they have 42 stores in 7 states.

They are insanely good (IMHO).  I just "discovered" them a few months ago from rave reviews on Urban Spoon.  Their shredded garlic beef, shredded pork, and "boracho beans" are, to me, positively addicting.

As Taco Bell has been mentioned, I have to share a comment one of my teaching colleagues made:

"We tried to make a "Run to the Border" last night, but the girl in the drive-up window told me that they had to stop service because 'their meat hose was broken!'

" />Ouch!" />
That sounds painful!

Twin wasn't kidding about gas stations; check this:

Need a car wash/taco combo:  They offer that, too:

And here's an audio link to the Stern's "reviewing" the place:

Here in McKinney, 27 miles North of Fuel City, one of our local Shell Stations serves excellent, home-made Mexican speciaties.

Chipotle serves tacos; I've had them there.  They serve both crispy and soft tacos.

Call me crazy, but I like Taco Bell. It's cheap and hits the spot.
