I didn't read the article but a lot of the charm of Tadich Grill is the age and location.

I wouldn't even like if they added on to the existing location because it would change it.

    Maybe I'd better read it.

My wonderful memories of eating at the Tadich Grill go way back to the summer of 1954 when as a 14 year old boy from NY, I spent the first of many summers in San Francisco visiting my father who divorced from my mother, moved to San Francisco in 1948.

As it was my father's favorite restaurant, we would eat at the Tadich Grill at least once a week.

My favorite dish back then (sitting at the long counter) was the Olympia oyster cocktail which alas, is now long gone.

A visit to San Francisco without eating at Tadich Grill is a travesty.

It appears to me, the Tadich Grill will now become, The Palm of seafood restaurants.

Halibut Florentine or the shrimp curry are my favorite dishes but I haven't been in probably 25 years.

Definitely a must when in San Francisco.

    Travesty. Uh oh.

Yeah!!  Ditto!  I want to go.

Mar - I'd expect the dishes are exactly the same as they were when you were there.  They seem to pride themselves in tradition, much like House of Prime Rib, but the menu at Tadich is huge.

Just checked.  Unless my Florentine was a special of the day it's no longer offered.

The shrimp curry is now seafood curry.  Hmmm, If they've added Dungeness Crab I might consider it.

Only partial-travesty with the visit to House of Prine Rib.

Gotta squeeze this in as well or it will be a debacle in my book....

The waiters are fascinating to watch do their magic.
They are ever rushed, but are totally efficient in their movements.

The last time I was there, there were a couple of very rich looking elderly ladies, who had to have been there since the fire.
Our waiter kept all his tables not needing anything, all the while bringing the ladies their drinks ( s), putting ones arm back on the table, gathering up dropped napkins, and bringing more drinks.
He said they were daily regulars and ate, and drank, the same thing every day.
When their driver showed up, the waiter helped them into the car.

I can't see that efficiency hiring a new staff, those guys have been there for years.

    Neat story, Tumbleweed.

Mar - Bummer about the halibut, but yes--they have added Dungeness crab to the curry.  Click on the image of it located here:

CC - Tadich is open at lunch, Tonga for dinner.  Or you COULD stick around longer next time!

Thanks for the link love2bake.  My favorite part of the article was the odds at guessing what the big announcement would be.  Reservations being accepted went off at 50-1!

Tadich Grill has always been a favorite of mine but after the exceptional meal we had about a month ago, I think of it as one of the Roadfood all-time greats.  If anyone can open up a successful second restaurant, these people can.  And it is only 4 1/2 hours away!

Tadich is the soul of San Francisco, and trying to move its magic to DC of all places, well, it's a travesty, even if they can duplicate the food. I know that as local CA seafood got harder to obtain some of the old original dishes were modified, so that part of Tadich is not like what I remember form the old days (70s) even at the SF location, but the DC restaurant scene is all trend and no substance. Standing in the line waiting for a seat at Tadich, how can they copy that?

DC used to have two classic seafood restaurants along the SW waterfront:  Flagship and Hogate's.  Both were dining landmarks for years, but ultimately closed.  Now Phillips Seafood, a long standing favorite on the Eastern Shore, has opened a Phillips Flagship in approximately the same location.  I'd imagine it's pretty popular.  However, I think Tadich Grill will have a very different vibe, and be located in a different and vibrant part of the city--I hope it does well.

Being the nation's capital where the population is fluid due to political, military, and diplomatic ebb and flow, DC restaurants are an eclectic bunch and include a wide range of cuisines from around the globe.  Seems reasonable to have some of the major US cities represented, too.
