Taking up my parking spaces

I have folks who 3-4 times a week park in my lot, leave their cars and go bowling or whatever. These are not customers, they are part of the bathrooms for free brigade.

My signs clearly state that parking is for"Customers Only", it's completely ignored. This causes a problem on busy nights,as parking close to the restaurant is somewhat limited. What would you do.

I'll let you know what I did!

I would call jeepguy who would tow them. After they have paid $150 for the tow, $29 storage min. $29 release fee. You will have an empty lot where you can give out free samples, direct people to the bathroom and promote roadfood.com

Let's Get Serious Dr., Remember your non-customer scafflaws may be regulars just not on bowling nights. So kill em with kindness. Besides tow away signs conforming to local laws and setting a time limit (60-90-120min whatever) I would warn people with flyers on windshields saying "Our customers are having trouble parking because of cars left by people not patronizing the restaurant so PLEASE do not park here when not visiting us" and that they will be towed next time. Also a sign by the entrance stating same. I am sure there are some bowlers who think it's ok cuz you're such a good guy. I have been in the towing business and I can tell you that unless you make the towman (jeepguy) a lot of money someone pays for every tow meaning you can't every other time say sorry I know that guy please give it back for free.

Take a bar of soap and write "this is the fee for using my parking lot" on the windsheilds.. This way potential future customers will surely remember where not to go

Four flat tires might make some impression. I assume you have knives of some sort in your establishment right? Perhaps a freak incident of spontaneous combustion, maybe a spark from the smokers went astray. Bet that'd make an impression on the bowlers.

(Above statements for purposes of amusement and hyperbole only).

I'm coming up soon Doc. I can't wait to check out your place. If the BBQ isn't great though, I'm gonna tell.

Isn't it strange that everyone that gets so agitated about your posts continue to respond? Some kind of sick self flagellation? Curious.

Funny, I don't see our Dr. as unhappy; I see him finding humor in it all, in the strange situations that arise that he never thought of and in the way solutions sometimes brought unexpected results.

I dunno, "Customers park free, all others $10"? Something like that maybe.

A local restaurant, Patte's Sports Bar, had the exact same problem. Pat has a small parking lot that will accomodate his clientele, but his restaurant is very near the local hospital. He solved his problem by making all lot parking "valet" on the weekends. So you could search the street for a space or pay (tip) to park in the lot.

if you are sure they are not customers then simply let the air out off ALL their tires. Don't slit the tire but take out the valve stems...takes about ten seconds per tire and then a night of grief. I don't think they'll be back.

It seems a reasonable question to me. First: Don't slit any tires. That's a crime. Second: Don't pull valve stems or do anything else that would let air out of tires. That's a criminal act, as well. Writing on a car with soap is vandalism. Post a sign with your local jurisdiction's ordinance concerning parking on private property without permission very prominently, make certain said sign also makes clear that violators vehicles will be towed, and make arrangements with a towing company to work your lot.

Here's how I solved the problem, and at the same time created a marketing method, thats been a very funny bonanza.

I had an exact replica of a frederick md.parking ticket made up.The outside was the same, big bold letters, black on a yellow paper. It simply says PARKING VIOLATION.The inside is much different however. It reads,YOU HAVE BEEN FOUND GUILTY OF PARKING WITHOUT SOMETHING TO GO FROM CHUBBY'S

THE FINE,1 FREE PULLED PORK SANDWICH,WITH ANY ORDER!

Then I list 10 or so items we frequently sell to go.

This worked so well in my lot,I put them everywhere,we get a huge return with them, and many funny stories of initial outrage followed by laughter.

I wish I knew how to use this computer better so I could show you one.

I actually called our local law enforcement agency regarding pulling valve stems of illegal parkers this afternoon. They couldn't think of a law that would be broken but then again this is a small town. Just don't take the stem w/ you...replace it after the air has escaped from the tire.

My feeling is that calling AAA to pump up your tires costs you nothing but time (don't belong to an autop club...hey, two lessons at once!!). Being towed can cost between $100-700 depending on the locals laws.

Drsmoke...your marketing idea may require some research. In some localities it is aganist the law to put printed material that resembles parking tickets.

It is also illegal in some towns to put door hangers up that resemeble past due notices -- trust me, I know!!
