Temporary Health Permit Fees? Sun, 08/9/09 9:24 AM (permalink)
Alright, Im sitting here in Oklahoma doing a show for the first time in this state & I got a very big surprise. Now I've been doing festivals for 5 years all across the south (I've got festivals across 5 states right now) and I do a show almost every weekend at least 6 months a year. I have never paid over 30.00 for a temporary health permit. Now usually I only do 3 day festivals but even in Memphis where Im from & have a few 2 week horse shows that I've got to get a permit for I still only pay 30.00 (Memphis says a temporary permit is good for 2 weeks). Well Im sitting here in Tulsa doing a horse show (actually 2 back to back in the same location) that will end up being 18 days open. Health inspector gets here (which I was told Tulsa inspectors are the worst in the country & they've got their own division that is actually located at the fair grounds specifically for inspecting concessions). She does her little inspection, all is cool, and then she asks if anyone told me what the fees where. That sorta spooked me since she thought it was important enough that someone should have told me beforehand. Well, she says its 30.00....for the fist 3 days and then 15.00 for every day thereafter!! That works out to 255.00! I spend the next 5 minutes on the ground twitching & foaming at the mouth & questioning her ethics & asking what in the world would it be that high for? I could open up a restaurant & be open every day of the year for only 45.00 more, why in the world would it be so much for a 2 week show? Her response is that she's got lots of people that hug her when she tells them how low their health permits are in Tulsa since they are so high everywhere else in the country. I want to know what other states these people are working in that their permits costs over 250.00 to setup a temorary show? What are some of the other temporary fees you guys pay at your shows in other states? I need to make sure I stay away from those! I just sell drinks (coffee & stuff) and I may have days where I only sell a few hundred bucks and like this week, I have to sell over 50.00 just to pay the freaking health permit! So how about we start a thread listing the health fees you've had to pay for a temporary concession trailer. Im pretty sure the fees are state wide even if each county has their own health deptartment (at least office) and each county has some of their own rules (I know Memphis doesnt allow roach coaches to setups & transient concessions businesses but Nashville does but the temporary fees are the same across the state)

Tennessee - 30.00
Mississippi - 30.00
Arkansas - I think this is 10 or 15 but I dont completely remember

Temp. Permit   1 or 2 days  No charge
      3 or more days  $25.00
      Good for 30 days
Need to give 10 day notice to county your working in.

      Yearly Permit   $200.00

As I have a yearly permit, not certain the temp. fees are still as described.  Fee may of gone up a little.

When I go to Shelby County(Memphis) I pay $65.00 for the weekend.
I think they told be it was 365.00 yearly.
I'll be at P Palace in Oct. and King Biscuit the next
Bella, thank you, I forgot they didn't charge. May try for CopperY.

Mississippi stopped inspecting events, except for Panola County(Batesville, MS).
You can set up for up to 3 days in MS without inspection fer free.
Mine is 100.00 yearly, 30-250.00 depends what you sell(risk)

          Arkansas: Temp=25.00, My annual=35.00

Why do you pay 65.00 for the weekend in Memphis? Is it different for out of state? Ive never seen a different form for out of state vendors. Temp permits in Shelby are 30.00 for up to 2 weeks (most events are only 3 day weekends but when I do 2 week horse shows or the 10 day Delta Fair its still 30.00) Now you've also got to pay a 19.00 code enforcement fee in the city of Memphis. Roadkill, what do you do? Have you been to Pink Palace before? I've been doing it for about 5 years as well as the Cooper Young.

I'm not sure what the temp fees are here in Sangamon County (Springfield Illinois) because I pay year around.

But I do know that it makes me madder than hell that we have an annual event here in town that doesn't require insurance. And so I have to compete against weekend warriors that vend once or twice a year at most and sell their food far cheaper than I do.

It's the only event I have ever done that doesn't require a certificate of insurance. And you can bet I bust their chops about it every chance I get. LOL

Geez, I knew we were high, but dang!

Counties here vary slightly, but on range the average $120-$160+ per event for a temp. rest license. These are for one day to 30 day events. If you have a yearly mobile cart license, then they will  honor it at no charge (same county) or charge $25 or so.

Certain items don't require a permit, but I'm still shaking my head over some of the items:
Popcorn, kettle corn, nuts, cookies, confectioneries, just to name  a few.

The city I live in charges $120 per day! Corona city is $124. per quarter, San Bernardino Co is $400+ per year. Needless to say I will not be vending in my own city.
