Tenn - N. Carolina road trip

On last Saturday, I was over to North Carolina. Got a heads up on yet another Bubba's BBQ. This one is right across from the Asheville airport next to Mr Pete's BP store. Newly opened. It is set up with steam tables and a buffet line, from which I was served into a to go box. A man from the back (not Bubba) came out to serve me, then he weighed it on an old hanging scale. It came up to a pound and a half! I asked did I owe more that the 8 bucks? He said, "No sir. I just don't want to short you." Took a taste before we got on the road, and it was the real deal. Across the mountain and stop for my first taste of Backwoods bbq (Mr. Pig's on Main Street, Erwin, Tennessee) and a pound to take home. They did not weigh my pound, but it was as generous as Bubba's - and the taste/texture was identical. If we had not devoured all 2 plus pounds quick when I got it home, I might have set up a blind taste test. And there was wood stacked at both places. Today, coming out from Kingsport on Wilcox Drive,on the right, before Meadowview, I saw a hand painted sign: "Coming Soon: Pig Out BBQ."

I hope to get to Mr Pig's place sometime soon. Actually, I'm going to NC next week maybe I can make it on the way over or on the way home. The Pig Out BBQ place you mentioned should have lots of traffic as that is a well traveled section. Keep us posted on it's opening.

The drive from Asheville to Tennessee is spectacular, with the completion of the NC side of I-26. From Erwin to Mars Hill is all "scenic highway." No billboards to pollute the view of the old mountains. A few official places to pull off, but wide enough shoulders (emergency lanes) to stop and look as well. When I make that trip at night, when the sky is right, it is an opportunity to actually see the stars in the sky.

The drive on I-40 is also spectacular and considered one of the most scenic interstate stretches.

I'm going to Kingsport tomorrow to help Mama put up (freeze) around 4 gallons of locally grown strawberries. I shall see if the Pig Out has made progress.

So far, on the "Coming Soon: Pig Out' in Kingsport. Yesterday, I drove by and saw a door open and some signs of human activity. Too rushed to stop and talk. But, we are by there weekly
