Texas Tommie? Tue, 11/6/07 6:55 PM (permalink)
Ok so I've now been stuck here reading fabulous reports of brats and natural casing dogs, strange toppings and combinations that would be classified as a superfund site if a government inspector happened upon one of us atlunch time when I recalled a diner food episode on food network.
This gastronomic creation was found in a real formeer rail coach diner as I recall in Western PA, possibly in the Altoona area. As I recall, it consisted of a large hotdog, split in half. A slice of cheese was then placed between the halves, then the whole thing was wrapped in a slice of bacon I believe a grilled roll and then covered with chili and onions and possible even a dose of whiz as well.

Does anyone know this creation or where it was in PA that I can sample this cretion myself? I've recreated it best as I can from my memory, but I really want to sample the real deal for comparison. I just can't seem to track it down. I'd like to visit the diner almost as much as to sample this dog. Help me o conniseurs of all meats cased and grill.

The best place I have had one is at a place called Nifty Fifties in Northeast Philly and in Bensalem, PA. It is magical...

Steve's Prince of Steaks, also in Northeast Philly, does a very nice one. They put a foot-long hot dog (or is it two?......I forget) on their very good steak/hoagie roll and top it off with plenty of cheese whiz and bacon.
