B.S. ( beloved Spouse) and I actually got a tax refund this year. Being responsible adults, we 're blowing it on a trip to Houston to visit family. What we save on hotels we plan to spend on eating. We plan to head to San Antonio for 2 nights. We welcome any and all recommendations for eats. I hope to stay at the Menger unless anyone has other cheaper places nearby.
Mi Tierra is on the list as well as Otto's barbecue...
Thanks everyone!

Be sure your route to San Antonio goes through Luling and Lockhart. That's where you'll find the best barbeque.

Stay at the Menger for the history. You can walk to the Riverwalk from the hotel. The Alamo and other stuff is right around there, too.

Mi Tierra is a great choice. If you don't mind a long walk, you can get to El Mercado (where Mi Tierra is located) by foot. There's plenty of other things to see there.

One place I always recommend ad nauseam is Chester's (several locations around SA), where you can get great burgers, fries, malts, etc. (Beer also, and even salads for veggie weirdos... )

Now Bushie calls Mrs. Oneiron a "veggie weirdo." She'll get back to you on this one. At any rate, Chester's is good.

We are planning to stay at the Menger. We just can't resist the place where TR recruited the Rough Riders and RE Lee rode his horse through the lobby.
Mmmmm... Q and tamales... I'm drooling already!

your route from Houston to SA will indeed put you within 5 miles of Luling, home of the City Market. It's an easy shot from I-10 and is a must eat if you're in the area.

Yeah Chester's has pretty good hamburgers and fries. There is also the Lone Star Cafe on Blanco Road and also one on Pat Booker Road in Universal City.Pat Booker is also known as Texas Hwy 211 I believe.Randolph Air Force Base is right across the street.Farm Road 78 divides the two places. The Lone Star Cafe is further up Pat Booker in the Old Hungery Farmer Restaurant. Have heard some good reports on it,though I haven't tried it yet.
If you take FM78 it will take you to Seguin and you can hit USHWY 90
that goes to Luling, etc. Have a good time here.

Thanks, everyone! Keep 'em coming! My ulterior motive is to have hubby fall in love with Texas so we can relocate. I'm tired of NE winters!

Remember, Texas is God's chosen state and Texans are God's chosen people.
And BBQ was God's gift to us. (LOL)

Twinwillow is correct. I've met this good man, and judging from his accent, I would guess he's from EAST Texas...

Thank you, Bushie. And, yes your right. Far, far, East Texas.

The food I miss most from SA is breakfast tacos. Bacon and egg, chorizo and egg, bean and cheese and my very favorite, barbacoa. Try them all, maybe two of each. But eat them early so you'll be hungry again at lunch.

Agree with the Luling City Market. Their sausage is without a doubt the best in the region.

Musn't forget empanadas at the Mercado in San Antonio. Yummo!
Make mine stuffed with egg and potato for breakfast.

I am also a transplant- NE winters are bad- but our first winter here in Texas it snowed. That was over 20 years ago- and this past spring has been a real blast of cold air- we had a fire in the fireplace for Easter and also had one this past week end. I didn't think that winter was ever going to leave us! But now it's in the high 60's low 70's and our only weather concern is tornados. Never really had to worry about those in the NE.
Enjoy SA- have only been there once- long before Seaworld arrived- the Riverwalk was fun. And if you are into brew- the Lone Star Brewery is a fun place to visit- they used to give tokens for free beer or free root beer- don't know if they still do that or not. But the kids enjoyed the tour.
