Thank you! Tue, 05/29/07 6:28 PM (permalink)
First off, thanks so much for the lovely get well thread. It meant a lot to me, it really did. I appreciated each and every comment.

I've been home since Saturday but am still somewhat disoriented between the drugs and an allergic reaction I am having to an antibiotic I was given intravenously. I am covered in hives from neck to knees and I look like a leper. I have scratched myself bloody in places. I think I need a straitjacket.

So how was the food, you ask? Well, the hospital I was in is Seventh Day Adventist, and, as such, is vegetarian. Thank God that doesn't apply to the patients.

The food was suprisingly good. I was on a renal diet, so not everything was available to me. I certainly ate my share of jello, I tell you, but that was no hardship because I LIKE jello.

I had several good omelets, and they came HOT, and the cheese was MELTED, and there was no industrial taste involved. Raisin toast, English muffins, lots of fresh fruit, very very fresh. Lovely strawberries, especially. Orange juice was obviously concentrate, but they took that away from me because of my kidney/diabetes problems. Waaah. No coffee allowed. I drank a lot of diet Sprite.

I ate a lot of chicken salad sandwiches, some on croissants, some on nice fresh wheat bread. They make the best chicken salad I've ever tasted and I want to get their recipe. More fruit, more jello.

Dinners were pretty good too. I had steak a few times, and although it was chewy, it had a nice beefy taste, and when I asked for it rare, I GOT it rare. Wonders never cease. Some excellent roasted potatoes and good baked potatoes. More jello.

The salads were the best. They were chockfull of different lettuces and almost no iceberg. The dressings were packaged but I asked for and got cider vinegar and olive oil and mixed my own with salt and pepper. Es wahr gut.

One night I had chicken parmesan. The sauce was bland, the linguine was good. The chicken itself had a tasty breading and was NOT dry. I didn't eat my vegetables. Green beans. Ick.

Did I mention jello?

I even got desserts, which surprised me. I tried custard (that was NOT custard, that was packaged pudding) and carrot cake, which turned out to be the best, with lovely cream cheese frosting. I had cheesecake, which was very good. I tried some chocolate cream pie, but the crust was bone white and about half an inch thick. Not flaky, very solid. The chocolate cream had a good taste but was almost chewy --- very weird.

And jello. Cherry jello, strawberry jello, strawberry kiwi. Stuffed with fruit, topped or not with whipped cream. All good.

But damn, it's good to be home. It was my first experience in the hospital and I hope it's my last.

Editor's Note- Here is the real PWINGSX calmly awaiting the return of the lady of the house. Katie says she(the Pooch) greeted her(Katie's) return with great Joy ! (As we all do !!)

First great hospital food report that I have heard. Wife was in M D Anderson for six months and the food was never ever that good. Glad you are recovering and sorry about the reaction but that will go away.

Isn't it great to be back home???!!!

I've read many of your posts, and I'm very glad to "hear" you on the mend.
Your pup looks a lot like ours. My wife grew up with corgis, and we currently have a tri-color like yours. But Winnie is a "fluffy", as they're called, so her coat is very long and silky (and a pain in the neck). She tries to "herd" the cat, which the cat thinks is pretty funny!

Pleased you're home, very pleased! The food sounded quite tasty. Maybe it was your positive and descriptive way of describing it. I like Jello also.

The food really was amazingly good. My sister Janet works at a surgery center affiliated with the hospital and she eats lunch there all the time. She swears by it.

I have another sister who works at another hospital in Boulder, and I chose to go this other one BECAUSE of the food. How's that for dedication as a foodie?

Glad to have you back. You may already know this (or maybe baths aren't allowed) but a cool bath with an entire box of baking soda is the only thing that got me through a grown-up case of chicken pox without tearing my skin off. There is also an oral anti-itch pill they can prescribe.

Thanks for the tip, Elise, but after nine agonizing days, the itching is going away. Thank God for hydrocortisone cream and Benadryl.

Hahaha, maybe it was Benadryl..."anti-itch pill". I talk like such a hillbilly sometimes.
