First off, thanks so much for the lovely get well thread. It meant a lot to me, it really did. I appreciated each and every comment.
I've been home since Saturday but am still somewhat disoriented between the drugs and an allergic reaction I am having to an antibiotic I was given intravenously. I am covered in hives from neck to knees and I look like a leper. I have scratched myself bloody in places. I think I need a straitjacket.
So how was the food, you ask? Well, the hospital I was in is Seventh Day Adventist, and, as such, is vegetarian. Thank God that doesn't apply to the patients.
The food was suprisingly good. I was on a renal diet, so not everything was available to me. I certainly ate my share of jello, I tell you, but that was no hardship because I LIKE jello.
I had several good omelets, and they came HOT, and the cheese was MELTED, and there was no industrial taste involved. Raisin toast, English muffins, lots of fresh fruit, very very fresh. Lovely strawberries, especially. Orange juice was obviously concentrate, but they took that away from me because of my kidney/diabetes problems. Waaah. No coffee allowed. I drank a lot of diet Sprite.
I ate a lot of chicken salad sandwiches, some on croissants, some on nice fresh wheat bread. They make the best chicken salad I've ever tasted and I want to get their recipe. More fruit, more jello.
Dinners were pretty good too. I had steak a few times, and although it was chewy, it had a nice beefy taste, and when I asked for it rare, I GOT it rare. Wonders never cease. Some excellent roasted potatoes and good baked potatoes. More jello.
The salads were the best. They were chockfull of different lettuces and almost no iceberg. The dressings were packaged but I asked for and got cider vinegar and olive oil and mixed my own with salt and pepper. Es wahr gut.
One night I had chicken parmesan. The sauce was bland, the linguine was good. The chicken itself had a tasty breading and was NOT dry. I didn't eat my vegetables. Green beans. Ick.
Did I mention jello?
I even got desserts, which surprised me. I tried custard (that was NOT custard, that was packaged pudding) and carrot cake, which turned out to be the best, with lovely cream cheese frosting. I had cheesecake, which was very good. I tried some chocolate cream pie, but the crust was bone white and about half an inch thick. Not flaky, very solid. The chocolate cream had a good taste but was almost chewy --- very weird.
And jello. Cherry jello, strawberry jello, strawberry kiwi. Stuffed with fruit, topped or not with whipped cream. All good.
But damn, it's good to be home. It was my first experience in the hospital and I hope it's my last.
