seafarer john James Bond is a character imbued with pompous bad taste. gross appetites, sexism, snobbishness, and childish ideals. Cheers, john Pompous bad taste: In what way? Except maybe drinking vodka "martinis" and Americanos Gross appetites: In what way? Many of the things he orders in the book sound delicious. I'm going to try to recreate some of them. Sexism: Maybe, but he seems to be a product of his environment. In the books he was born around 1921. You cannot expect him to be a knee jerk feminist. Snobbishness: In some ways yes and in some ways no. He has friends and girl friends from all walks of life and races that he respects, but he does look down on some groups and individuals. Childish ideals: Pro British, pro American, pro democracy, pro human rights, anti communist, anti dictatorship, anti Nazi, anti criminal, anti murders, anti sadistic torturers, etc.

THIS is a martini. The garnish you see is not an olive. It is a Tomolive, actually a pickled green tomato. Great in a good martini.

Chris-my parents would argue with you...while a good martini in their eyes match yours-gin and vermouth, you never, ever put anything in it but an olive( dad loved anchovy stuffed, which goes back to their tailgating days in college-things were so much more sophisticated in the 40s) I do not drink martinis much anymore, but I have the most gorgeous shaker and glasses from my parents.I actually saw the same thing in an old Cary Grant movie...

typically, I make my martini: 1/4 shot of vermouth in the glass, quick swoosh around the glass, dump it out, add gin - Bombay Saffire ONLY - olive. If I want it dirty, I gently squeeze the olive before plopping it in.

For me, that slight hint of olive really makes the martini.
