The $25.00 Hot Dog
Mon, 08/14/06 7:15 AM
( permalink)
On little old Loooooong Island, in the Hamptons "where else darling?" a restaurant called The Laundry sells a $25 hot dog. And, believe it or not they are selling like hot dogs!!!!!!! The foot long, all beef dog is served on a "Jumbo" grilled bun--with mustard or ketchup at no additional charge. With mandatory tip and tax the total comes to $32.16. During July 1000 were sold. "It's a whimsical dish" the owner said. Last weekend according to a waiter (who gets a mandatory 20% tip on the $25)(forget the calculator, that comes to $5) a group ordered ribs, burgers and dogs with a $275 bottle of Krug champagne. They were slumming. Burgers, by the way, are a bargain at $17--------Only in America !!!!!!!

And I thought that a restaurant here in Huntsville that servers a hot dog for $6 was high. It goes to show that you can get away with anything.

That hot dog had better be soaked in champagne and on a gold-flecked bun for that price. $25? Yeesh. I could see creating a "gourmet" faux hot-dog, though. Maybe freshly made with Kobe Beef and drizzled with truffle oil or something? From the description of this one, it doesn't seem any different than the dogs I can get at my local place for $4.00.

P.T. Barnum stated it best," There is one born everyday". Those people out there are missing the boat though. They should go down to a local cart and get a great hot dog for $3.00, and then turn around and give all that extra money they saved to a great philanthropical charity such as the Myway foundation. $25.00....Mercy!

For that price I could get 14 Ultra Dogs from Yesterdog. Lets see, 1 hot dog or 14? No brainer there.. Or for that matter, I could get 25 dogs from DogTown in Ada (Monday Dollar Dog Special)..

Two observations. 1) if the guy can get $25 for a dog...he's crazy to not sell them for that. 2) when I still had my catering business we had boned stuffed quail as a menu item. Pain to make but somewhat popular. I hated making the things so I tripled the price. Guess what? Demand went through the roof. Go figure.

I think the beef used for these dogs is from special steers that are hand massaged every day to keep their meat tender. Are you kidding me ??? Now there's a job that requires a special degree from a four year college. A real BS job. Which reminds me of the trip I took a whole bunch of years ago. I was surveying a company for a new product. This outfit made pretzels. They had one big machine making pretzels, but they had a number of boxing machines. Each machine was loaded with cartons with different brand names-----so the same pretzel was sold under a bunch of different brand names. Some were a lot cheaper than the others and some were "gourmet" and cost a lot more. But they were all the same pretzel---and a pretzel by any other name tastes just as sweet!!!!!!!

If your restaraunt has a million dollar note on it cause real estate in the hamptons is by no means cheap, and you dont get mcdonalds level volume, AND you offer a hot dog, yeah it should be 25 bucks.

Forget hot dogs! We'll go up there and sell little bowls of chicken and dumplings. Those ought to go for 40 bucks, at least.

Here’s The Laundry's menu http://thelaundry.com/laundry-menu.pdf I see the $17 burger, but no sign of a $25 hot dog. Does anyone have a link substantiating the aforementioned swank frank, or is this an urban myth?

Ya gotta get the mood in "The Hamptons"...it's not if a product is "worth it", its that you are "rich enough" to buy it. People in the Hamptons are very impressed with themselves (and want to impress each other) so of course they "throw away money" which is the point of it....How "cool" to spend $25" on a hot dog (you should see what they spend on their pet dogs!)

I'd never pay $25.00 for a hot dog. And, I'm sure I could make a better one at home or get one just as tasty at the hot dog cart on the corner. Ridiculous. If people think they're going to impress others by eating a $25.00 hot dog, well I can sell them timeshares on Mars. Andrea
