The BEST pizza in lower Michigan.........

The best pizza will be had at Green Lantern Lounge in Royal Oak, Mi. This is NOT a thin crust, cracker crust ( like we have here in the U.P. of Michigan) nor any fancy pizza (Chicago style?) where the sauce is on the top.........it is simply a full bodied pizza........lots of toppings, perfect sauce, and the cheese makes it all meld together perfectely!!Voted Michigans best pizza ... Any non-believers...check this out.........

Dominic's Pizza in Erie, MI is delish! The sauce is great! It's a sweet sauce. The ingredients are always fresh. They also use homemade sausage!

I left Grand Rapids a year ago and hauled my butt down to West Palm Beach.  I've posted these pics in another thread, but since you brought up the subject, figured I'd share them with ya.

My favorite lunch time deal was from Marcos Pizza in Forest Hills (neighborhood joint in Grand Rapids Twp).
A Deluxe slice cost something like $2.50 and 1 slice did you good, 2 slices you where lucky to finish off (they literally weigh close to a lb. each, and are not shy on loading up the toppings).  Being a neighborhood place, a  lot of times I'd order one slice and find 2 stuffed in your box!  Remember to generously tip the staff there...

You'll see a beer cap in the pics below.. That's for a size and thickness reference.

Now when I was 15, my first real job (full time at that) was at the Forest Hills Inn, also in Grand Rapids Twp.  Up until a couple years ago, I called these the best pizzas around.  But they raised the prices and thinned out to NY style crust and amount of toppings.  It was a crying shame.  First time I thought the cook had something up his ###, but the second time, and after to talking to my brother who's a chef there told me they changed things..  Pizza still is darn tasty, but when you used to be barely able to eat 1/2 of one by yourself, to having no problem inhaling the whole thing now..  Well, being cost effective here.

FH Inn's current pizza (with the beer cap reference):

Then there's days ya say screw it..  Make a homemade burrito (had to toss this one in, sorry):

Great to see a thread about Michigan pizza places. One of my favorites is Buccilli's in Houghton Lake. Whenever we go up north to our cottage Buccilli's is one of the first places we go after we get there. Sorry guys no great pics like yours.

East suburbs of Detroit just spawned a family-owned chain: Dan Good Pizza. Terrific Chicago-style deep dish, and a traditional pie also. The large traditional is about the size of a Conestoga wagon wheel! These are wonderful pizzas.

I just checked out their website and the pizza looks incredible! Just curious RedJim, did you dine-in or carryout? have you tried any of their non-pizza entrees?

Have to say, the best pizza in Michigan, let alone the LP, Is Fred's Italian Restaurant on Plainfield in GR. Search for "Fred's Pizza Grand Rapids Michigan" to find their website...

the pictures on the site are NOT from their pizza. Go there sometime. Great atmosphere, family place...its burned down 2 or 3 times, and everytime they have built back up...Pizza is awesome! Great crust, loads of toppings...Im a big guy (As Mayor Al can attest to) and I can only eat 2 pieces in a sitting...simply the best!

LouisvilleCraig, Fred's is not bad pizza at all.. Their big time competition is Vitales Pizza.  Though there are several locations across West Michigan, the only good one (IMHO) is the original location on Leonard Street (around the 800 block or so, east Leonard that is).  It's less then 2 miles south of Freds. The main restaurant is on the left, and includes a full Italian menu, on the right is the pizza shop and what used to be their banquet hall has now become a sports bar. Pizza is served at both locations.

I don't see how it's silly at all.  The pictures give you a sense of how good the food is.  I don't work in food service so I wouldn't care about promoting someone elses products, SILLY! lol

The way this location is set up, carry out or delivery is preferred. They can seat maybe 16 at hightop communal tables. That would be fine for a dine & dash lunch, but no "ambience" what-so-ever. Not meant as a criticism at all.

And no, I haven't sampled the non-pizza section of the menu. Can't tear myself away from the great pies.

Hope they find a location close by you, JDA.

    hello all
i lived in michigan for 44 years and by far the best pizza, well ok my favorite pizza hands down is Loui's Pizza in Hazel Park on Dequindre.
louie was the head pizza chef at the original buddys on 6 mile i think, back in the mid to late 50s. in 1964 i believe he told them to shove it and took his sauce recipe with him. similar to buddys as it is a sicillian
style pizza, but louis sauce ROCKS!!!
i lived in chicago for a short time and now for 3 years in connecticut
    and nothing comes close.
give it a try, you will not be dissapointed.

I like Tomatoes Apizza, especially the coal fired pies from the Forrest Hills location.

Deluca's Pizza in Lansing has fantastic pizza,a little greasy, but I like it that way. They have a seafood pizza that is just unreal.

Haven't had Deluca's pizza for 15 years, but at the time it was some of the best Lansing pizza.
