The Best Burger in the South!!!!!

Forgive Tybeeguy, he hasn't gotten over the loss of Earl's oliveburger.

Looks like I might have to take a Road trip to check out Poe's... 3 hours and a nice drive up and down the coast sounds like a plan in the next few weeks.
I will have an extra day off soon and will catch up on my scouting for Q and make a point to see some more low country.

May not be the best in the South, but has been voted best in Birmingham a few times. Hamburger Heaven in Irondale. Handmade to order, big beefy meat patties, fresh lettuce, maters and onions and they have a special sauce too. They also have great onion rings and the milkshakes are wonderful! Don't bother going on Sundays, they are closed then. I'm blessed to live right down the hiway from them and love it!

Well tomorrow we'll know the reults of the Best Cheeseburger in Lower Alabama, which is awarded every two years...the last awards were while I was in Iraq, so I'm stoked to find out....I'll post results tomorrow......the Mobile Press Register's food critic David Holloway visits roadfood restaurants for months following tips sent in by readers.....

The odessey took the Mobile Register food critic 7 months to sample hundreds of cheeseburgers. Geographic bounderies of the search area are from MS state line to FL (Baldwin County) and as far north as Thomasville on US 43 and northeast to Evergreen AL

Winner: Roshell's Restaurant and Deli, The Steer Burger, located at 2904 Springhill Ave Mobile 251-479-4614

I personally have had the cheeseburgers at Heroes, Burch Cassidy's and Callahans, all were fantastic.....I'll try the highway 43 burgers next time I have to go to U of AL for asbestos accredidation....happy eatin' any of y'all coming down this way......

Looks like a good list. If one has only a day or two, which ones would you suggest? Also, thanks for serving the country and I'm glad you made it back safely.

Well, I would hit Callahan's..only thing is they don't do fries, but their other sides are pretty good, burger is huge, 1/2lber.....its near the Oakley Garden District, Church Street Cemetary and close to the Museums and such downtown....Heroes is about 3/4 Mile from Callahan's in the Dauphin Street Entertainment District, there's about 4-5 small eclectic Art Galleries near by and famous Three Georges Chocolate shop is accross the street......Lulus is on the Intercoastal Waterway in Gulf Shores.....wacky beach bar that's worth the trip and the music is always good and they have a nice outdoor deck...

apologies to Calvin, but I haven't really found a great burger in my area of SE Michigan. The one I would have rated the best was taken over by icky frozen preformed patties... And I've never been to Crazy Jim's Blimpy Burgers so I can't judge them. (no parking in perpetually under construction downtown Ann Arbor)

But we had some beauts in Wisconsin!

The Old Sawmill Cafe in Forrest City, Arkansas. Juicy on the inside, charred crispness on the outside. Then, topped with sawmill gravy.

If you have one meal this year, this one'll do.

The time has come.. I have a few days off and will be doing the trek to Charleston....Just to see what Poe's has to offer.

"The Grease Rack" in Newport, Tennessee has the best burgers that I've had the pleasure of eating! Been in business since the early 70's!
