I thought Fat Mama's Tamales in Natches was nothing special when I visited back in 1999- however they had a great margarita.

Cherokee Inn in Jackson was "ok" but I can't believe you left off Two Sister's Kitchen in Jackson- absolutely outstanding!

I have an alphabetical list. You can see that the page was almost full when I got to Oxford.  I have quite a few more and agree with your recommendations.  The best food city in MS is Greenwood IMO.  Lusco's is outstanding.  What's your top places in Jackson besides Walker's, Nick's, Elite, Julep, The Mayflower, Char, Bravo, Two Sisters and Stamps. Or any other places in MS you like.  Thanks.

I've mentioned this place before here, but The Friendship House between Aberdeen and Amory is excellent for catfish and the trimmings. They have other seafood and meats, but the fish and the atmosphere are what you come for. I hope sometime someone will give it a try. It's our "go to" place when we go back home to visit.

Here are a few more Mississippi suggestions:

1. Anthonys Market  West Point Mississippi  Not a market but a restaurant in a former market space. Nicely renovated and a great find. Modern and not so modern takes on Southern food.

2. The Tin Lizzy  West Point, Mississippi  Very good Southern breakfasts. Excellent biscuits. Avoid the frozen OJ.
     Ok lunches.

3. Daves BBQ  West Point, Mississippi  Very good Memphis style BBQ

Also check out the Howlin Wolf Memorial Blues Festival every Labor Day weekend. Good food, great music.

Is there anything in WP as good as Gary Danko's.
 
I think Dave's is closed.  When was the last time you visited WP.  There's a new place called Point but I have not heard much about it.  That's Bulldog country over there.  Too close to Starkville for me.

Interested in your opinion on two places I don't see listed:  Jerry's Catfish House in Florence and Peggy's in Philadelphia.  Have you been to either one?

I plead innocent.  I live in the Delta and don't go to East MS often even though I should.  The casino there is outstanding and I have friends that go there often though they have not been to Peggy's.  I have been told it was outstanding.  I think there's an old house and you pay as you enter then go in the kitchen and fill up your plate. 
 
I have passed Jerry's a hundred times on my wife from Jackson to the Gulf Coast on Hwy. 49.  I never have stopped because I don't really like catfish.  I like wild MS River catfish but not the pond raised filets the restaurants sell.  Did you know MS raises 90% of the catfish sold in the U. S.  Watch out when you buy catfish as the Vietnamese are trying to flood the market with fake stuff from overseas.  I have never heard anything bad about Jerry's and it's a nice looking place.  Isn't that the one built like a space ship or something similar.  It's in a big round building kind of strange.  Ask me more if you need help.  I have been to a lot of places here.  My favorites though are all in the Delta, Oxford or the Gulf Coast.

First time poster. Not Littleman, but I have eaten at both.
 
Jerry's is my first choice for catfish. Good, crispy catfish with excellent flavor. The fish fry does not overwhelm or mask the flavor of the fish. Try the fried pickles. Great sweet tea. Nothing fancy here. The first time I took my my wife was a Saturday night during deer season. Judging by the deer carcasses in the back of two of the trucks, the hunters had come directly from their deer stands!
 
Went to Peggy's on an incredibly cold day (for Mississippi) this past winter - awesome meal. The fried chicken was some of the best I've ever eaten - crispy crust, moist. It was voted best fried chicken in the state of Mississippi. Vegetables included black-eyed peas, fried okra. Both were excellent. The food is served buffet style, but not on one of those heated buffet tables where everything dries out. Cornbread and rolls are awaiting you when you get to your table.

We got back from Natchez recently and thought Fat Mama's was ok, nothing to rave about. Locally they are more known for their margaritas than anything, all the locals kept saying "for a margarita go to Fat Mama's"
 
There is a new BBQ place in town called  Big Mama's; IMHO not as good as the Pig Out Inn.  Big Mama's doesn't trim their ribs which can get to be a fatty, gristley affair most times.  However, the owner's wife makes the desserts, which are great.  Plus he does have the Baked Potato Casserole which is extremely popular.  Big Mama's sides and meat from the Pig Out Inn is a perfect meal.
 
We also hit the Old Country Store and tried their advertised "Best Fried Chicken in the World".   It's worth it just having a meal to  watch Mr. D, the owner sing.  The fried chicken is excellent, but skip over the Mac and Cheese -- it was a weird concoction of macaroni, shreds of unmelted cheddar all suspended in a thick, overly salted,  gloopy, clear sauce (?chicken broth with corn starch or flour that was cooked down)

Welcome to Roadfood!  Sorry I didn't see your reply earlier, but much thanks for the information.  It sounds like both of them are must stops while in Mississippi.  I have been to Peggy's, but it was on a Thursday, so I missed the fried chicken.  My return trip will have to be on a different day.

Tell me more about the places in Starkville, Littleman (Little Dooey, Dave's Darkhorse, the Veranda).  We might be visiting my brother-in-law, who lives there, before long and I'd like to know where we should go.

Mississippi is woefully underrepresented in this site's restaurant listings.  Somebody local should do some writeups.

Milwfoodlover, the resource you linked is good, but somewhat out of date. Several of the places listed are, sadly,  no longer in business.
Not listed here is one of my favorite Jackson places, Sal & Phil's. Great PO'boys, grilled red fish, Royal Red shrimp, crawfish in season. All good.
