The brats and sauerkraut in the pan on the grill is calling my name right now.

I just happened to grill sausage on the grill tonight.   I griled them for a while on indirect heat with the grill cover on.  I finished them over some higher heat to get good grill marks and a crisp outer texture.   Came out great.  No simmering in water first.

I've never simmered in water first.  I'm not opposed to it, but I've been pleased with the results without doing that.

I interchange between direct over low heat (good for tailgating) and indirect followed by a direct finish (see the brats in the Smoke Day thread).  I don't add things like kraut, peppers, etc. so the simmering method doesn't do anything for me.

Not sure of the best WAY, but the best PLACE is within my reach! I usually pan fry them in some butter in winter over low heat and in summer.just do them on the grill.  Thye never last long enough to worry about keeping them hot

This is my method of choice. I try to cook them slow enough that they don't burst open, then give them a little char at the end. I get all my sausage from local markets if I don't make it myself, (Lieihs and Steigerwalds for German sausages and Squadrittos for Italian), both have the right meat to fat ratio that render nice juicy, flavorful sausages so you want to retain as much of the juices as possible.

..and yes pan frying is just fine too.
