A little Googling turned up this contender for dining ala trunk.

Sounds like a great adventure. I agree with most of the places selected and would like to add two special places I really like. IMHO, the best burger in town is at The Blue Moon on Old University Ave. Just a big juicy ball of select ground chuck cooked to order. There is also a great little Mexican place called La Mestiza that I really love. In fact, so good they just opened a new location on Main St. just off the square. It's a door or two down from Haze. Their other location is out on Odana Rd. across from Russ Darrow. I think hands down it's the best Mexican food in town and I've tried them all.  That squash curry mentioned at Vientiene is fantastic. There is another one (same owner) on Park St. Not as shabby and same fantastic curry.

Pancho,

I agree with you about La Mestiza.  Fantastic food.

FYI, this is right on the edge of the UW Arboretum and if the weather's nice it might make for a good place to take a break.  Also, it's right by an interesting little neighborhood (look at the "ladder" of nearby streets on a map) that was part of a planning experiment back in the 1920s.  I don't know if there are any architecturally significant houses in the area, though; the State Journal had a story about it a number of years ago and I've forgotten a lot of the details.

And taking the good with the bad, just southeast of here is the Badger Road area.  To say it nicely, it's a "troubled neighborhood".

That's a great idea. The area you speak of is known as "The Lost City". That section is in a flood plain and supposedly all the houses sank into the muck. There is a significant house back there you may have seen. A light tan colored stucco bungalow. It's the oldest house in the Arboretum.

Thanks for the help; you hit the nail on the head.  From what I remember from the newspaper article I believe the master plan called for a tree-lined boulevard all the way to the Capitol.

Will you be joining the group on May 2?

I'll see what I can do...my daughter may be coming home from college in Oregon that weekend. Hey, thought of a couple more...Big Red's Steaks on University Ave. Best cheesesteak this side of Philly and I've had both Pat's and Geno's. Also, the Coconate's Hot Dog cart if she is around on weekends. A lot better than Papa Cornonofulos or whatever it is. Last time I was at O'Malley's at the Jetport, it was mediocre at best. The Curve is far better.  Last (probably not), but not least Gotham Bagels...downtown or on Park St.  Best bagels ever and I lived in NYC. Try an onion with lox, caper cream cheese, and watercress. Scrumptious.....http://www.gothambagels.com/

Oh! Fantastic. I want to visit an "interesting little neighborhood" where "houses sank into the muck".  That makes it as much fun as food :} I vote for that being a must stop.  Even if it is around a "troubled neighborhood" I have all you strapping strong young men to protect me!

Look what I started! LOL, although I don't deserve the "young" any more than Buddy claims to Oh, wait, you obviously weren't talking about me.  I believe I met many of you at the Contingent get together last fall, the one with the Frank Lloyd Wright houses. I knew MilwFoodlovers, Mrs MilwFoodlovers, X1 and ChuckL50 before that, but that was my first Contingent meet.

After reading this thread I thought it worth mentioning that Madison proper is smoke-free in case it's a concern for anyone.  And this includes bars as well as restaurants.

Hi,
I'm told our plans may include some kind of Moosefest the day before in Appleton, WI, so I am wondering if any of you have any good hotel or B&B recco's for either Appleton or Madison for Sat nite?
Thanks!

Appleton!!
You MUST eat at Victoria's at 503 College Ave.
Old-style Italian in a mafia-like setting. It's awesome.
Some of the best Gnocchi I've had, ever, anywhere.
http://www.victoriasitalian.com/

As far as hotels - Paper Valley (I think that's a Radisson now) is very nice...there are several on College Ave (the main drag). There's a bunch of La Quintas, Best Westerns, Holiday Inns and Hampton Inns in the area. Predictable, but familiar.

Also - go to Vande Walle's Candy - homemade chocolates and treats. It's near the mall. http://vandewallecandies.com/cart/
OR (and?) to Wilmar's Chocolates on Superior http://www.wilmarchocolates.com/zc/index.php

If you want fresh cheese and milk, a visit to Lamers Dairy or Simon's is mandatory. In nearby Omro, there's The Colonial Cheese House, which has sausage and local specialties, as well.

Appleton?  Moosefest?  Is this a Facebook thing or did I miss a post up above?

If you do go to Appleton on Saturday it is likely we will only be able to join you in Madison on Sunday.

Happy Moosing!

More bad news. The Oriental Food Market appears to have cut back on their fresh ready to eat food items. A visit there today found the fresh spring rolls MIA. The clerk said they must have been out of them but there were not enough other choices to merit a stop.
We did however dine at Doug's Soul Food. It was an excellent overall experience. We had BBQ Beef short rinbs, Southern fried chicken, fried cat fish, collard greens, blackeyed peas, hush puppies, corn bread and Miss Edna's lemon cake. There were no duds in the lot. Near the end of our meal Doug came out and told us how it all came about. It seems that Doug left Birmingham Alabama for Madison Wisconsin for love and his future wife's birthday. If you ever visit, he can tell you the particulars. It's a sweet story. Open for 18 months, business is OK but could be better. He holds down a position at MATC besides his restaurant. Ask for his home made vinegar pepper sauce to dress up your greens. I look forward to returning to this lovely but out of the way located restaurant.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to take a pass on this one since I'll be out of town that weekend.
On the bright side, the town I will be in is Memphis...now taking recommendations for "must do que".
Enjoy! Looks like a great trip.

Roadfood reviews

My two favorite BBQ stops are the Cozy Corner (not open at night) and the Interstate.
Payne, A & R and of course the Rendezvous are highly recommended.
Not listed but a place you want to stop for breakfast is Bryant's where you can feast on great biscuits, grits, country ham and other great choices. www.bryantsbreakfast.com
There's blues at the ersatz places on Beale and then there's Wild Bill's. However, he passed and I'd make sure it's still open.
Just about my favorite town.
Have fun.

One stop worth making would definitely be The Essenhaus.  Great German atmosphere.  Boots of beer are available instead of mugs.  A huge variety of beer, and the food is most excellent.  They have a pub attached, the "Come Back Inn".  Really good time.  If you dig spaetzle, this is the place.....

I'll second Payne's in Memphis.  Make the pulled pork and BBQ'd bologna sandwiches your priority.  Order 'em the way they serve 'em; with slaw and sauce already on the sandwich.  That slaw is a total killer!  And don't worry, they don't overdo the sauce at Payne's.  Also, make sure you go to the original location if you like your greasehouse ambiance meter set to maximum grittiness (no really, that's a good thing).

So, while I certainly want to help a fellow Contingent member in his quest for good Memphis 'Que, the question now stands, how far away from the original intent of this thread will we get before taking it back on track?

Speaking only for myself, if I can just ride or sit in a big Cat, I don't need no roadfood for a successful day!
I can show folks a nice Jamaican restaurant if they need more than spaetzles and beer. I also think the Asian store on Park and Washington would make a fun break but I'm up for most anything except Mexican. I'd even do that if it had some unusual things like bugs or spores.

Since it is April 1, I'm assuming ChuckL50 is pulling our leg.

I checked the Madison AtoZ review (usually easy graders) of Essen Haus and they slammed it.  Consider that Milwaukee has the finest German restaurants in the Western hemisphere, I vote for skipping Essen Haus.
