The Counter Fri, 02/8/08 9:40 AM (permalink)
Yesterday, my brother invited us to lunch to a new place that just opened in West Palm Beach, FL called "The Counter". Personally, I had never heard of it and after looked them up on the web (http://www.thecounterburger.com) , I found they are a Southern CA chain. Well, not only was I very impressed with the decor and service but the burgers are definitely one of the TOP BURGERS in south Florida. WOW!! What a great place! Anyone else been to The Counter before? Thoughts?

Right off I am in love. One-pound burgers? Ten cheeses to choose from?

From what I can tell, a basic burger is 1/3-pound, one cheese, 4 toppings and one sauce. What do they charge for that?

Do they have ketchup and mustard?

What is the cooking method? Can you get them medium? Were the rolls anything special? How about the fries?

    Inquiring palates want to know!

Another thing is I enjoyed their web site particularly the opening where they build the burgers. Their menu looks really good with lotsa choices.

This place looks like a winner. Next time I'm in South OC I'm there. 1 pound medium burgers, Tillamook cheddar and malts..... sounds like heaven.

Ok, here's the deal with this place. I thought I was heading into another Fuddruckers-type place but this is anything but!

First off, it is a sit-down restaurant with a bar full of wine and beer. Their selection of wine and beer seemed to be pretty good athough I was not there for that reason. Anyways, this place was IMMACULATE clean and decorated as a cross between art deco and modern. I'm not sure if any of the other places are decorated like this but it was different but a good different! The waiter came out and told us how to read the menu. Then told us how to put our orders in. Everyone gets a card where they check the box for the corresponding orders. The waiter told us to write in the temperature of the beef on the right-hand side. I chose a 2/3 lb beef burger cooked medium with onions and baby greens on an english muffin. The mustard, ketchup and mayo are on the table in a neat bin also filled with straws, napkins, sweetners and extra pencils. We also ordered something that was not on the menu called a "4X4" along with our orders. It consisted of fried pickles, regular fries (exatly like McD fies but with spices) sweet potato fries and onion rings. All were excellent.

When our orders came out from the back, my eyes widened and I immediately started drooling. I couldn't believe my eyes! The burgers are HUGE and you can tell none of them are pre-made. All of the burgers were super thick and of different shapes. The burgers are dark on the outside but once we bit into them, we could tell that they were ALL perfectly cooked. They served it on a large english muffin. My wife had her 1/3 lb burger cooked medium with provologne, mayo, hard boiled egg and pickles served on a burger bun. Hers was sensational too.

I didn't take any pictures because I surely didn't expect to be going to a place like this with a burger like this. In all, everything was very good and I can't wait to go back! If they can make these places a mainstay around the US, I have a feeling that many of us burger loving Roadfooders will have a very good "fall-back" place to go when we are traveling and there are no other RF joints around. This burger is the best chain burger I have had BY FAR!!

Sundancer7 - No, the Brickyard still takes top honors but believe it or not, this place is not far behind. I was thoroughly impressed!

According to my calculations, a 2/3 pounder with cheddar, olives, roasted chiles, grilled onions, peanut sauce, a full order of onion strings, a banana malted and a piece of key lime pie will take up the better part of a 25 dollar bill.

                  If the quality's there I won't mind a bit.

I want to go there. It is a new destination.

I do not want the huge burger but I like the options.

Been to the Santa Monica location and except for the noise level, it's quite good.

They've taken a simple hamburger and made it special.

                        Great sweet potato fries.

This would be one of those places that I would eat at 3-4 times a week if they were any near me.

                            Thanks for the tip!

I'll probably try the Counters' Royal Palm Beach location (their one spot in Florida) when I am down in south florida for 10 days in March.
