I really hope A-Rod sticks to his guns and keeps saying he is innocent. a 1 1/2 ban is too good for that arsehole.  Lifetime ban!

Pirates beat the Cardinals last night 9-2.  Double header today.......could mean first place again for them.  Go Bucs!

Now four in a row!

It's so good to see PNC Park sold out!

Today is August 1...what will 2013 bring?  I'm guessing the implosions of the past 2 seasons are popular topics in the Pittsburgh baseball community these days.

The Pirates are certainly capable of winning the division and even the league, but can they get 2011 and 2012 out of their heads?

I can't predict the future, but this is a different season, and this Pirates team feels different. There have been several points so far this season where they could have started the swoon, and each time they've responded by ripping off a ten game stretch of 7-3 or 8-2.

If they win today, they will have completed a rare 5 game sweep... of the consensus "best team in baseball". The '27 Yankees had two 5 game sweeps, but both were of bottom dwellers. The '32 Yankees had one. The '06 Yankees swept the Sox. There are a few more, but with the rarity of 5 game series, sweeps are exponentially rarer.

Tonight's Bucs-Cards game is being broadcast nationally on the MLB Channel.  We can only hope for that rare 5 gamer.

Go Bucks? I didn't realize you'd finally come around to rooting for Ohio State. By the way, the Bucks are No. 2 in the pre-season coaches poll out today.

Chris Davis - whose trade to the Orioles on 07/31/2011 I instantly lamented on these pages - hit #40 onto Eutaw St. last night.

Here is an interesting URL that documents all the balls hit onto Eutaw St.; many have 'instant replays' available: http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/bal/oriolepark/eutaw.jsp .

The reason why a "Eutaw St. HR" is such a "deal" is that the field and the first level of seating are all below street level; a ball still has to be approximately 40' above home plate-level to pass over the wrought-iron fence "protecting" Eutaw St. beyond the ballpark.

H.O.K. designed Camden Yards that way so as to present an "old-timey" 30,000 capacity profile from street level while actually seating nearly 50,000.

So far, only Junior has hit the warehouse (during BP for the All Star Game).  It'll be any day now for "Crush".

211 games the chump got off lucky!

First and foremost:  Welcome back!

To topic:  When the arbittators get done, he'll "serve" 50 games at the beginning of the 2014 season.  If arbitration does not get him that result, a Federal Court will.

Thereafter, it's will be all about the $$$; he'll cripple out to third until the Yanks cut him.  At that point he will still be owed the remainder of his contract.  (As I recall, the Orioles paid millions to Albert Belle and Glenn Davis for years after they limped off the field).

At this point I do not think that A-Roid can count on much endorsement income, maybe the $40,000,000.00 that idiot Tom Hicks' foolishness has the Rangers still owing him in deferred pay will help him pay his alimony.

It must be the name.  Khris Davis is putting up nearly identical numbers, although his sample size is much, much smaller.

Anyone else want to take A-Hole and Braun on a Soprano style boat trip??  I will gladly supply the concrete blocks.

Ryan Dempster may get suspended for hitting A-Hole but as Ryan said after the game... It was worth!!!  (You got to love a pitcher with stones)

Even though I could care less about the Mets, their losing Matt Harvey to possible Tommy John surgery is truly unfortunate.

But, how fortunate it was for Tommy John to have volunteered himself - in his prime - for that revolutionary procedure.  He was 32 at the time and missed the entire 1975 season.  But, he came back stronger than ever and pitched productively well into his 40's.  I truly believe that he deserves a place in the HOF for this contribution - together with his 288 wins.

Previously, that injury was called "a dead arm" and it killed many great careers; Dizzy Dean and my Buccos' Vernon Law come immediately to my mind.  And, I wonder how many other tragically short but brilliant careers - e.g., Koufax, Kiner, Rosen - could have been extended by modern medicine.

The Orioles are not keeping up with the Joneses. They seem to be hangin' with the Kardashians (and Yankees) these days....in the standings.

Hopefully Tampa Bay will join that party.

The early returns on giving up Price for Will Myers is starting to look something like the O's giving up Milt Pappas for Frank Robinson; or the Cards getting Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio; or the O's getting Chris Davis and Tommy Hunter for Koji Uehara!  Congrats, Rays!

Vern Law hurt his ankle in the clubhouse celebrating after the '60 World Series. He missed a lot of '61, but averaged 30 starts a year from '62 until the end of his career, and went 17-9 in '65, with a .215 ERA.

Actually, the injury happened on the bus to the airport after the Bucs had clinched the pennant.  As a devout Mormon, "the Deacon" wore "Temple Garments" as underwear.  He was injured defending his garments in the course of unfortunate horseplay.

Nevertheless, he started three games and won two in the 1960 WS; he injured his arm by changing his motion to accomodate his injury.  Starting game 7, Murtaugh pulled him after 5 - even though the Bucs were up 4 - 1 - because his arm "felt dead".

He was then in his baseball prime at 30 when he sustained the injury and he was never the same after.  Even during his remarkable 1965 season he succeeded by guile, determination, and clean living rather than the "Verlander-like stuff" he had prior.  (I was an eye witness to this for a number of his starts in Forbes.  As to what had happened on the bus in 1960 my source was Bob Rice, the Bucs' travelling secretary who was onboard the fateful bus and witnessed the incident).

Much the same thing happened to Dizzy Dean after he (foolishly in retrospect) continued to pitch after Earl Averill broke his toe with a drive in the All-Star game.  Sadly, he was "done" at age 26.

It was James Shields and not David Price, and Shields has been a big reason for the Royals' improvement this year.  Despite being only 9-8 he's put up a very decent 3.14 ERA and has definitely solidified the rotation; right now this doesn't fit the mold of a one-sided trade at all.  The downside is that Shields is 31 and very likely has fewer years left than Myers, but certainly enough to be a big part of a contending KC team.

Thanks for the inside scoop, MetroplexJim; I saw quite a few of Deacon's games myself.

I agree with your basic premise, and it's a shame about Harvey. I love seeing those young electric guys. It is amazing to watch them work, and it is doubly sweet when your team wins against a guy like that. Sure, it's great to watch Aroldis Chapman throw 100, but it is so much sweeter when Michael McKenry hits a game winning home run against him! (Not that I particularly like Chapman, I don't.)

You got to LOVE the METS

The other night was Marlon Byrd T Shirt Night at the park, first 20,000 fans got a free Marlon Byrd T-Shirt.

ONE PROBLEM!!!

They traded Marlon Byrd earlier that day, so there was NO Marlin Byrd in the stadium for Marlin Byrd T-Shirt Giveaway Day.

Damn!  The Rays have such a "pitcher factory" I can't tell one from another!

They trade one and two better, younger ones seem to drop off the assembly line!

August, 2011: 8-22
September, 2011: 10-16

Entering September:  First in the NL Central!

Fingers and toes are crossed.

And now having Marlon Byrd pretty much as a free rental;

AND just now having Justin Morneau pretty much as a free rental,

AND with Grilli-Cheese soon to be back on the menu,

Could it be BUCTOBER???
----------------
The Morneau deal.  WOW, what a genius move!

I'll bet he is so glad to be away from Target Field; the move there from the Metrodome ruined his "numbers"; moving to PNC Park and being with a (potential) winner will make him feel like he's been let free from jail.  Somebody's going to pay him eight figures next year, but not the Bucs.  Let's enjoy him while we can.

Good moves by the Pirates to shore up for the stretch run.  The addition of the second wild card this year should make for some good playoff races in September...even the Yankees are still in it!

It'll be interesting to see how many teams are interested in Morneau for next year.  He'll be 33; not necessarily old by modern standards but his history of concussion-related issues makes me wonder if his skills are going to deteriorate faster than normal.  I wouldn't be at all surprised if he goes back to the Twins to finish his career, and I suspect Joe Mauer may get some significant evaluation at 1B this month.

You're right about Mauer.

That bat should be in the Twin's lineup every day.  First base will definitely increase his games played and lengthen his career.  For the mega-millions the Twins are paying him for the next five years, they'd be smart to use him wisely.

GO CUBBIES!!

Oh wait they were eliminated back in April!

I think, though, that they are presently "on the right track":  ownership with a 'deep well' and a "hands off" attitude with their first class front office.

After Tom Hicks (a 'leveraged buyout' schemer whose various balloons burst when his luck ran out) was forced in bankruptcy to auction off the Rangers, the DFW 'metroplex' "lucked out" by ending up in the same felicitous ownership/management situation in which the Cubs now find themselves.

The Rangers are owned by two "real" billionaires - Messrs. Davis and Simmons - each of whom could "buy & sell" Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban together many times over.  Both keep low profiles, tend to their very real businesses, and let the classy, savvy Nolan Ryan 'front' their ownership.  That's a great deal for us baseball fans down here in the Big D.
