It actually doesnt surprise me from the CUBS.  Ron Santo WAS like Ernie Banks he was a MR CUB.  The team treated him poorly in life and have continued in death.  I am glad the Santo family got the stuff back and not the flubbies.

Living in Yankee territory I'll tell you that the curse of Don Mattingly will take care of the Dodgers.

Truth be known, I think Giradi should be Manager of the Year.  Despite crushing injuries - Texiera, A-Roid, Jeter, Granderson, etc. - he led the Yanks to a winning season in the most competitive division in MLB.

Given the Reds' collapse against the Giants last year and the Pirates this year, I wonder how much of Cincinnati is screaming "Dusty must go!!" this morning.
I was saying that they hired him after the CUBS fired him.

I love the PART of the story that said the decision came from the top.  That is partially true, Walt Jockety and JOE MORGAN were in the stands at Pittsburgh when Dusty and KWAY-toe choked again, Joe was not happy, so neither was Walt.

I wonder if Walt still has strings on LaRusa????  That would seriously piss off some REDS fans!

Mattingly is rolling the dice with Kershaw on short rest.  He doesn't want to go back to Atlanta.

Meanwhile, my Buccos had better start Cole Wednesday in St. Louis.

Mattingly's gamble paid off:  Kershaw gave him 6 innings with 0 ER's.  Now he and Greinke will both be well-rested for (I hope) the Bucs.

BTW:  as I recall, Alston used Koufax on short rest several times in the several Dodger WS' in the '60's.  And the wonderous Koufax always performed wonderously.  Koufax was, by far, the best I ever saw - and I have seen Spahn, Marichal, Gibson, Seaver, Ryan, Carlton, Palmer, Johnson, Martinez, Maddux, and Kershaw - all HOF/HOF quality.  But, "Koo-Foo" was THE ONE.
Re:The Crack of the Bat; The Opening of the Wallets: BASEBALL 2013!!! 2013/10/08 11:18:34
Given Kershaw's youth it's not difficult to imagine that he could possibly someday be mentioned as an equal to Koufax, should he continue to pitch as he has.

I see that Cole will indeed be starting Wednesday and he'll have a full 4 days of rest.  I wonder what adjustments the Cardinals will make.

Then again, Adam Wainwright will have had 5 days off.  No break for the Pirates there.

Koufax quit at his peak at 30.  In his last four seasons he averaged 24-6, 300+ K, ERA < 2, with a WHIP < 1.  We will never see that again.

BTW: His lifetime post-season ERA in 4 WS was 0.95 with a 0.825 WHIP.

The game has changed so much in the 47 years since Koufax's last pitch that it makes comparisons difficult and in some cases unfair.  For me the best way to look at it is to see how a player stacks up against his peers, especially when there's a significant time component.

Having written that, does Willie Davis catch the fly that Ethier missed in Game 1?

What you say is largely true.  By today's standards, the finest hitters the 6'2/210# Koufax faced were "smallish" by today's standards, e.g: - Mays (5'10/180), Mantle (5'11/195), & Aaron (6'/180).  And, three years after Koufax retired, the mound was lowered.

All that said, Koufax was strictly fastball and curve.  I've never seen anyone faster - including Ryan - than him and he was the only pitcher who had such a hop on the #1 that you could see it from the stands.  His #2 was a true 12 to 6 that came in shoulder-level and broke down to the knees as it crossed the plate.  Again, you truly had to see it.  Who knows how he would have done off the lower mound; perhaps he would have developed a change and a slider and been even more dominant.

And I'm saying all this as a diehard Pirate fan who grew up "hating" the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have their back against the wall, but have hope as Kershaw gets the ball today.  This might be a bit tedious, but here are his mechanics:

And here is Koufax:

Both are the same size, both are left-handed pitchers.  Pretend you're Carlos Beltran, who would you rather face?

According to one of my heros, Willie Stargell:  "Trying to hit Koufax is like trying to drink coffee with a fork".  In this clip, Mays describes his fastball, Brock his curve.  You really had to see him in person ... to appreciate the poetry.

Hey drinking coffee with a fork is EASY if you freeze the coffee first

I would not want to be a batter vs kershaw OR Koufax, heck the movement on the modern baseball nowdays is totally amazing and the way the pitchers figure out how to manipulate the ball just that tiny bit to get it to drop or run or chase

I would NOT want to hit against them, hell it stopped being fun trying to hit college level pitchers, I can't imagine 90-105 mph pitches, especially high and tight.

The only luck the Dodgers had was bad; perhaps there is a curse.
  • No Matt Kemp,
  • Hanley Ramirez' bat rendered impotent by the most effective 'purpose pitch' in my memory,
  • and "the best pitcher on the planet" gives up more earned runs in one game than "The Left Arm of God" did in his entire post-season career.
  • Ouch!
With Craig returning to DH in the AL parks, I'm giving the WS to the Cards right now.  Damn, and the Bucs had them on the ropes such a short time ago!

No slo-mo mechanics on Gibson; he was only human.  Though Gibson was great - I put him in a rarified class with Clemens and Seaver - he was no Koufax.

The youngest man ever inducted into the HOF, Koufax was beyond "special"; he was a true singularity.  Really, you had to have seen him.  As a Presbyterian boy from Pittsburgh with no axes to grind, I tell you that truly as a fan of the game.

The three things I remember most about Gibson:

1)  Seeing in person his 1971 no-hitter at Three Rivers - the first no-hitter ever thrown in Pittsburgh (and the first and only time Pirate fans ever rooted for Willie Stargell, the last batter in the 11 - 0 Cardinal rout, to strike out);

2)  Several years prior, seeing on TV Clemente break Gibson's leg with a line drive.

3)  Taming the Tigers and breaking Koufax' single game K record in the 1968 World Series.

Truly a seris for the history books. Games ending on an obstruction call and a pickoff neither of which had ever ended a series game before,

Still, I prefer the more traditional "Mazeroski technique".

Chestnut Hill Shake Shack is serving a Green Momster Shake that sounds like a shmallow attempt of a Shamrock Shake.

With Wacha-Wacha Wednesday, it looks like a seven gamer.

So far, it's been the Weird Series, not the World Series; at least it's been interesting.

The coolest thing so far is Big Papi burnishing both his legend and his HOF credentials.  Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

And for me, both his persona and performance are happily reminescent of the late, great Willie Stargell's in the Bucco's "We are Family" season of 1979.

Wacha pitched a great game but he did leave the game without the lead.

Big Papi "had a book" on Wacha by his third at-bat. Many of the best hitters in baseball can be somewhat puzzled when facing talented young pitchers for the first time.

That happens to the Yankees all the time. They often lose games to talented young pitchers...making their ML debut.

Sure Big Papi is the cover story (deservedly so) but the Red Sox wouldn't be where they are today without the very clutch performances in critical moments by so many other players throughout the playoffs. Gomes - Napoli - Victorino - Ross - Elsbury - Bogaerts to name a few.

Awesome starting pitching by Jon Lester and of course....
