The only luck the Dodgers had was bad; perhaps there is a curse.
  • No Matt Kemp,
  • Hanley Ramirez' bat rendered impotent by the most effective 'purpose pitch' in my memory,
  • and "the best pitcher on the planet" gives up more earned runs in one game than "The Left Arm of God" did in his entire post-season career.
  • Ouch!
With Craig returning to DH in the AL parks, I'm giving the WS to the Cards right now.  Damn, and the Bucs had them on the ropes such a short time ago!

Not that I am not impressed by Michael Wacha - or wish it on him - but as a Pirate fan, I remember Steve Avery of the Braves all too well from 1991.

That said, I simply do not see a way for Boston to beat St. Louis this year.

You'll see the Red Sox win.

Just waiting to see the mechanics analysis of Bob Gibson...since the World Series doesn't start until Wednesday.

No slo-mo mechanics on Gibson; he was only human.  Though Gibson was great - I put him in a rarified class with Clemens and Seaver - he was no Koufax.

The youngest man ever inducted into the HOF, Koufax was beyond "special"; he was a true singularity.  Really, you had to have seen him.  As a Presbyterian boy from Pittsburgh with no axes to grind, I tell you that truly as a fan of the game.

The three things I remember most about Gibson:

1)  Seeing in person his 1971 no-hitter at Three Rivers - the first no-hitter ever thrown in Pittsburgh (and the first and only time Pirate fans ever rooted for Willie Stargell, the last batter in the 11 - 0 Cardinal rout, to strike out);

2)  Several years prior, seeing on TV Clemente break Gibson's leg with a line drive.

3)  Taming the Tigers and breaking Koufax' single game K record in the 1968 World Series.

I know you mentioned something about the early returns as far as Davis & Uehara.

The late returns are coming-up jackpot for us with Koji ALCS MVP...

Go Koji!

We kicked Koji out of Texas so hard it dislodged the obstruction in his throat!

Good luck, BoSox.  But, you'll need more than that.

Hey! Beer & fried chicken sound like Roadfood.

The Red Sox can't rid themselves of John Lackey fast enough. He is one of the most unpopular players in the history of the Red Sox.

Red Sox. Boy, I remember when Ted Williams hit .406.

Yes, I really do remember it. Couldn't stand the Red Sox then, can't stand 'em now. Well, I liked Bobby Doerr and Dom DiMaggio.

Don't forget Vern Stephens; the BoSox of the '40's really had firepower

You really remember 1941?  That was seven years before I was born; I barely remember Ralph Kiner and him mostly from my mother 'throwing a fit' when the Bucs traded him when I was five.

In the matter at hand, the Sox won't be able to feast on the Cards' bullpen as they did Detroit's.  Cards in no more than 6.

Last night's game was easily the best comedy on TV!  We got to watch the Holy See of Umpires convene, not one but TWO errors by shortstop Kozma, and the unbelievable pop up that just DROPPED between Wainwright and Molina.  I couldn't believe my eyes.
Stay tuned.........more fun and games tonight at Fenway.

I enjoyed the "Holy See of Umpires" too. I think the Cardinals were less upset with the correct call being made against them, than they were with the glaring violation of MLB's Unwritten Rule that once a ruling is made it cannot be changed no matter how obviously wrong the call was.

Just where was the "Holy See of Umpires" when Sid Bream was called safe in 1992?

Or when Anibal Sanchez lost a perfect game to a bad call at first a few years back?

You are exquisitely correct in your observation.

Bad calls are part of the game !!!

(They even give me something to bit*h about 21 years later)!

Everything coming-up lobstah so far...

Go Booston Red Sox!

Now that you mention it, several pair of my Allen-Edmonds dress shoes are older than Wacha!

As a Pirate fan I hope he is the second coming of Steve Avery.  But, I really can't wish that on the kid - at least before he signs some ridiculous Josh Beckett-like contract in a few years.

Truly a seris for the history books. Games ending on an obstruction call and a pickoff neither of which had ever ended a series game before,

With Wacha-Wacha Wednesday, it looks like a seven gamer.

So far, it's been the Weird Series, not the World Series; at least it's been interesting.

The coolest thing so far is Big Papi burnishing both his legend and his HOF credentials.  Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

And for me, both his persona and performance are happily reminescent of the late, great Willie Stargell's in the Bucco's "We are Family" season of 1979.

Wacha pitched a great game but he did leave the game without the lead.

Big Papi "had a book" on Wacha by his third at-bat. Many of the best hitters in baseball can be somewhat puzzled when facing talented young pitchers for the first time.

That happens to the Yankees all the time. They often lose games to talented young pitchers...making their ML debut.

Sure Big Papi is the cover story (deservedly so) but the Red Sox wouldn't be where they are today without the very clutch performances in critical moments by so many other players throughout the playoffs. Gomes - Napoli - Victorino - Ross - Elsbury - Bogaerts to name a few.

Awesome starting pitching by Jon Lester and of course....

Our beloved Koji!!!!
