The Game!

With the Heisman voting deadline almost upon us the one thing we know for certain is that the award for the best football player in college football once again will not go to the best college football player. But none of that matters today. What matters today is Muck Fishigan!

Not much of a game this year considering Michigan is pretty much an also ran team and only second best in its own state.

The best player by far, at least quarterback, is Jameis Winston of Florida State and may not get the Heisman considering the unresolved cloud that hangs over his head for sexual assault which probably will scare votes away. In just reading articles lately it looks like there is a not so subtle push for Alabama's A. J. McCarron. That will be a mistake. He's OK to good but really a caretaker quarterback on a team that about any competent quarterback could step in and do as well. Still though, the most exciting player to watch is Johnny Football (Manziel) but he hasn't had a game to capture the imagination like the upset of Alabama last year. He just bleeds drama, excitement and charisma on the field and backs it up with talent.

I have to disagree with you about Winston being the best player. I wouldn't even rate him the best quarterback. But that's the trouble with the Heisman now. It is supposed to go to the best college football player, and the best might be an offensive tackle or a linebacker. In 2009 a running back won (Mark Ingram), and a cornerback won in 1997 (Charles Woodson). A wide receiver won in 1991 (Desmond Howard) and 1987 (Tim Brown). But except for Woodson, Howard and Brown, and two ends (1949 and 1936) who played both ways it's been all quarterbacks and running backs (including a couple of fullbacks) since the inception of the award for the best college football player in 1935.

Ohio State dodged a bullet but they showed me they are not deserving of a shot at the BCS title game even if they turn out undefeated.

They did, indeed pull it out. Next week Michigan State. A little over a month from now -- The National Championship (if Auburn or Florida wins).

Florida State won big again. They probably have a lock on the BCS championship game. McCarron threw a 99 yard pass to Cooper to put Alabama up on Auburn. Longest Alabama touchdown ever.

    Michael,

You may get your wish. Alabama just stupided their way out of the BCS championship game and Number 1 ranking.

They got lucky by a blink of an eye to get one second put back on the clock, attempted a 57 yard field goal by a guy who had already missed 3 in the game and had it returned by Auburn for a 100 yard touchdown. That was unbelievable. They should have taken their chances with a hail Mary pass or overtime. Maybe they didn't think McCarron had the arm to make a hail Mary. If so, he may have won and then lost his Heisman hopes in one game.

It wouldn't surprise me, though, if Auburn moved ahead of Ohio State. Of course that would be wrong. And then there's the Big 10 title game next week between Ohio State and Michigan State.
Oh, the Alabama kicker on that last play wasn't the same guy who missed the three earlier attempts.

Ha! I wasn't aware of that (Alabama kicker). That just means it was an even stupider decision. Too much switching back and forth between games to keep everything straight.

Had he made 1 or 2 of those it might've changed Saban's mind about the attempted 4th down conversion that ultimately failed.

Given FSU's passing attack and what OSU showed on defense today, a championship game between the 2 could feature a lot of yardage and points.  It'll be interesting to see what discipline is handed to the 2 OSU players who were ejected today, especially the offensive lineman who not only got kicked out but then compounded the situation by flipping off the crowd as he walked to the tunnel.  I won't be surprised if he's suspended for both the Big 10 championship game and whatever bowl game the Buckeyes play.

After Joe Fusco retired I didn't followed the Titans much.  And my other alma mater has a winning team only every other decade or so.  (They claim "admissions requirements", but Stanford seems to do just fine).

Fact is - as a native Pennsylvanian - I have always been and always will be, an admirer of Joe Paterno.  (I don't want to pick any scabs here, just R.I.P., JoePa).

    -------------------

On a more positive and forward looking note ...

So, it looks like OSU v. FSU.
    Should be entertaining.
I would have preferred The Ego Bowl:  Meyer vs. Saban.
But 'Bama's bad luck was indeed OSU's good fortune this year.
    Congratulations.
And continuing good fortune v. MSU & FSU.

Even if they win out, I don't think Ohio State gets into the BCS championship game. I expect to see FSU vs. SEC champ.

There is not a lot of comparative action between the B1G and SEC to evaluate strengths but the SEC might not be as strong this year to assume the SEC champ should go to the BCS title game over an undefeated Ohio State. But then again it is not a lock for Ohio State to go undefeated. Michigan State is no pushover.

    Buffalo?!
I hadn't heard of them since Calvin Murphy!
    And that was another sport.

    Florida A&M?!
Didn't they always lose to Grambling in Division II?
At least they can compete with OSU's marching band.

    Why?

I thought foodbeme had struck a nerve.

    ----------------
Edit for an additional thought -

If you are a "name team" from a "name conference", an undefeated record will get you into the title game, regardless of what the computer says.

That's why Paterno joined the Big Ten.  He had several undefeated seasons where PSU, then an independent and pre-BCS - did not win the "national championship" because they were kept out of the "big game" by conference politics.

If OSU beats MSU they are in the Big Game "like Flynn".

Nah. I just thought I'd point out the fact that he was overlooking the same thing for Florida State. By the way, the Florida A&M game was a substitute for Vanderbilt, which pulled out of its scheduled game, sort of at the last minute, citing a conference schedule problem.

Oh, and Calvin Murphy, who played his high school basketball at Norwalk in Connecticut, didn't play for Buffalo. He went to Niagara.

Do you really want to get serious? According to the Sagarin strength of schedule ratings,  Ohio State's rating is 61st and Florida State's 66th. Oh, and Ohio State is No. 2 in the new BCS rankings.

I wasn't implying that FSU should be #1 either. IMHO they, AND their QB, are both Grossly overrated!
There is no one team head & shoulders above the rest this year.
There will be controversy regardless of who gets picked to play in the BCS Championship Game.
