P.S. IIRC, wanderingjew initially claimed he wasn't available for the Cincinnati trip either.  After much cajoling he miraculously found a way to join us and had a great time.  So, whaddaya say Dale; do we need to shame you into this one as well, or will you save us all a lot of time and embarrassment and just give in now?

B.

Honestly, this is the deal. Things were different this year. As much as I would like to join everyone and spend the entire weekend harassing Chi Town Diner,  My condo is falling apart around me. I need new appliances, new carpet, new closet doors, new windows and new blinds. That's a priority. I'm going to rely heavily on my gainsharing for this and I'll set aside my tax refunds for trips.

As I indicated in a different thread, I am planning on a spring trip to Iowa for an Iowa Chop Smackdown. What I didn't mention is that I hope to fly in and out of Milwaukee. The only way I would be able to swing this is if a good airfare deal falls on a date on or around the event. That's the only way, other than that it would just be feasibly impossible

Re: The Great Chicagostyle Hot Dog and Italian Beef Crawl, Spring 2015. 2014/08/17 14:48:51 (permalink)
I’ve got a few minutes here on a Sunday, so I’ll address various questions raised so far.

Sharonh,
You are correct, Hot Doug’s will be long gone by the time May, 2015 rolls around (unless Doug changes his mind and decides to sell the joint).  But his success has spawned a new generation of Gourmet Encased Meats Emporiums.  I’m sure we can include at least one of them as part of the Crawl.

ChiTownDiner,
You and wanderingjew  (and a few select others) may be able to make the leap between Burt’s, Poochie’s and Johnnie’s, but the average Roadfooder needs a little space in between those belly fillers.

And what’s with all the talk about getting “to Chicago early” and picking a hotel?  How much closer than Westmont do you want to get?  Pack a sleeping bag and I’ll make some space in my garage for you.

ChiBears15,
I’m hoping we can plan this event along the same lines as this year’s Chili Crawl: Saturday devoted exclusively to the stated theme (with a few closely related delicacies thrown in, i.e. Grilled Salami Sandwiches at Poochie’s.  And of course, PIE), and the surrounding days (Thursday night arrival dinner, a more general tour of Chicago’s finest on Friday, and early activities before Sunday’s departure) given to other Roadfood interests.

A Barbecue stop could potentially fit into any of those other days.  I’m thinking CTD might push for Uncle Bub’s, but I’m envisioning something a bit more adventurous.  Think Alabama Fish Bar and that will give you an idea of the kind of ‘Que I have my eye on.

Ralph Melton and icecreamchick,
I can think of no better way for Ralph to spend his birthday than hanging out with 25 or 30 of his closest Roadfood friends, chowing down on overly dressed sausages and soaking wet shaved beef sandwiches.  Certainly a cake could be arranged, but in this circumstance, might he accept PIE?

That’s it for now.  Keep the questions and suggestions coming.  I’m carefully studying the recent Tribune dining section’s “Sweet Or Hot 16” best Italian Beef Joint list.  Looks like some field research might be necessary…

Another set of date to keep in mind is Passover which severely limits the eating of buns, etc.
Passover begins at sunset Friday, April 3, 2015 and ends at nightfall Saturday, April 11, 2015

I like this approach.  I'd have other plans for either Saturday or Sunday but not both, and having activities over the course of 3 days would allow me to participate.

WJ, a note for you.  If your Iowa trip will include Des Moines over the last full weekend of April, keep in mind that the Drake Relays will be going on and last-minute hotel rooms might be a little tough to find.  In the old days the entire city would sell out but quite a few new hotels have been built in the past decade or so and the problem's somewhat alleviated, but the good rooms will likely still be gone.  On the plus side, you're welcome to stop by my friend Jeff's house for a beer.

The Doodle poll is created!!

http://doodle.com/kib7bznikcawddpg

I did all the Saturdays and Sundays in March, April, and May, except for the weekend in April that both Passover and Easter falls on.

Make sure you click on that zig-zaggy part that fully expands the dates.  Enter your name and for each date, select "Yes", "No", or "(Yes)", which indicates the date would work for you, but it wouldn't be ideal.

As far as I'm concerned, the weekend of May 1-3 is when we're doing this.  Let's see if the Doodle Poll agrees with us.

BTW, abe_froeman, you may want to check with JRPfeff and PieDiva regarding the date of/whether or not there will be a Smoke/Pie Day next year.  If so, we may need to eliminate the weekend of May 22-24 as an option.

In this story MH is a mythical half skunk, half possum creature.  Lisa is the fairy princess who turns him into a real live boy.

In case you're wondering, I am that jive talking wolf fox who leads MH astray and sends him to the isle of skunk/possum boys.  A role I was born to play.

Buddy - We haven't made a decision on 2015 Smoke/Pie Day party yet. It would be on May 23 or 24 if it occurs. That's Memorial Day weekend, so those days are probably a no-go for crawling around Chicago anyway.

Ivyhouse, you're way ahead of me on this one; I've never even heard of Weber's Bakery.  But that's not uncommon in Chicago's Northside/Southside culture.

This has nothing to do with race, nationality or any other factors other than the Chicago tradition; "where you come from is where you tend to stay".  Folks from south of Madison street rarely come up north for anything unless it's really special.  Likewise for Northsiders.  Top Notch Beef Burgers on 95th Street might pull you down, but anything less than that you can get closer to home.

Southside Contingent member CarolinaBob led a tour of the South Suburbs a few years back.  All us Northside natives were astounded at the fantastic grub you could find if you just crossed the imaginary line at Madison Street.  Zel's Roast Beef, Country House Burgers, Popolano's Fried Chicken, and of course, the house made Ice Cream at Cunis' Candies were all outstanding.

As for Weber's, I won't make any promises this early in the game, but I can assure you, if ChiTownDiner has anything to say about it (all hail the Almighty Spreadsheet), there will be at least one great bakery visited at some point in the trip.

Does Weber's have a specialty?  What made you aware and drew you to them?

Friends who lived in the Chicago area said they have great paczinkis (sp?), donuts and bread.  They say there is usually a line to get in, especially on weekends.

In the early 15th century the Pequots of the swamp raided another Pequot town and killed all of the braves that could be found and most of the women and children. Nits grow into fleas, they cautioned each other in justifying the deaths of the children. They then carried off the women who were left alive and one of the young males, a tall for his age youth whom they believed could be taught the swamp people's way.

It was this youth who came to be the cause of the swamp Pequots' demise in later years. As he grew, Seclatewetum, for that was his name (meaning cat of darkness with white stripe and the fury of the opossum), nurtured an antipathy for his kidnappers consonant with the natural feelings one would have towards those who destroyed his family.

At the age of 20 Seclatewetum was a large young man, fully six feet tall and heavy of limb. He had become an acknowledged master of the swamp Pequots weapons of war as well as the tribe's best digger of soft shell clams known as wumpwicts, which was the Pequot word for pissers at low tide.

One day, while showing the tribe's leader a new technique he'd developed for finding the elusive wumpwicts, Seclatewetum was able to spear him with the tines of his wumpwicts digger, which closely resembled what today we know as a pitchfork. After making certain that Oprecoln, the Pequot leader, was dead Seclatewetum picked up the tribal staff and returned to the town and declared himself Sachem. He then ordered the tribe to move from the swamp and to open a casino where in about a century some silly-ass Pilgrims would come to leave their goods as a result of having gambled with the descendants of the wise Sachem known as Seclatewetum.

MH is the lineal descendant of Seclatewetum, which is why he is at home with skunks and opossums.

Thanks for the heads up, SC. I'm planning to traverse a good portion of Iowa  and I'll try to work around Des Moines if my visit falls during the Drake Relays.

If the timing is right then I would plan to head to Chicago at least for the main even which I would assume would fall on a Saturday, but its all contingent on airfare specials into and out of Milwaukee .

Ivyhouse,
Paczkis (pronounced "poonch-keys") are indeed quite delicious, but they are more commonly found just before Lent, kind of a Polish "Fat Tuesday" treat.  Doesn't mean they won't have them, but you'd have better luck a couple of months earlier.

Davydd,
Cleveland is mighty close to Chicago.  I'm just sayin'...

wanderingjew,
I'm seeing some back peddling here.  Seems like you're looking for a graceful way to join the crawl without looking silly about your first post saying there was no way you could make it.  It's okay pal, we accept you as you are; no judging.

Also, if you're spending time in the Quads when you get to Iowa, you should check out this LTHForum thread from Da Beef (aka King T here on Roadfood), starting with post #14 and continuing to the end.

Michael Hoffman,
What a moving story.  How proud you must be of your ancestry.  And knowing it was told by you tells me every word of it is true.  Do you hold dominion over the skunks and possums like Tarzan does over the beasts of the jungle?

No back peddling here my friend, I was just trying to think things out. I was going to fly in and out of Milwaukee anyway and my Iowa trip was going to be a spring trip.  It's all going to be about timing regarding any potential air fare specials.
